- Brutusfly, on 12/15/2008, -16/+67Open it, Save as... JPEG. Oh, I'm sorry, this isn't a Mac article.
- GorfTron, on 12/16/2008, -2/+41I use my camera to take a picture of the monitor.
- newdigger, on 12/16/2008, -3/+28Enough of the JPEG's... PNG, PNG, PNG... Just keep saying that to yourself.
- kimbja98, on 12/16/2008, -0/+21Opening PDF only takes long because people use Adobe Acrobat...they take a few seconds using other readers (which I'm sure mac and linux users can agree).
Also, using jpeg removes 2 great things about pdf: Vector graphics and smooth/highlightable text. As such, it is compatible with screen readers and supports native jpeg/png file embedding, so nothing is changed when you edit a pdf and you can extract the original files. Also means if you want to print it out, it'll come out exactly how you see it on screen without having to do cmyk conversion or worrying about dpi (pdf supports cmyk and colour profiles).
I actually think a better solution would be to use docstop(?), where you can embed your pdfs into flash (everyone loves flash right?), thus making them as useless as possible! - sylkn, on 12/16/2008, -2/+17Screens are flat now. Just use tracing paper.
- ThirdPrize, on 12/16/2008, -0/+14I like to draw it out on paper and then scan it.
- inactive, on 12/16/2008, -0/+14You're both doing it wrong. You have to scan the monitor.
- Myztry, on 12/16/2008, -1/+12How to convert text documents into a lossy photographic format.
I love it when nuff nuffs do that. Those artifacts look so professional. - mrBitch, on 12/16/2008, -2/+11Yep, since PDF processing is built into OSX, it really is as simple as:
1. Open the PDF file (double click, or right-click Open )
2. Click : File Save As
3. Click : Format
4. Choose either :
GIF, JPG, JPG-2000, Microsoft BMP, OpenEXR, PhotoShop, Pict, PNG, SGI, TGA, TIFF
(also, if you want to convert a large number of PDF files in a batch, just use Automator) - Kelmon, on 12/16/2008, -0/+8It's probably worth mentioning that it works the other way too. I recently had need to provide screenshots of a series of actions so I took screenshots of each and then used Automator to convert the PNG images into a single PDF document for distribution.
- cheap2, on 12/15/2008, -0/+8Only if the document fits the screen
- Trilogy, on 12/16/2008, -0/+76 ways to ruin image quality completely. Use a proper software instead of Adobe Reader and you're fine with any PDF files without making a hassle of it.
- MistrBrownstone, on 12/16/2008, -0/+6Buried for misuse of the term "Begs the question"
- inactive, on 12/16/2008, -1/+6That post was more useless than I ever could have imagined.
- mynameistux, on 12/16/2008, -0/+5well, I used the gimp when I needed to do it.
actually, I used open office to make the pdf, used the gimp to auto crop it, save it so I could put it into posteRazor.
blew it up so it took up 4 pages, and had a sign for a protest.
/geek - drunkenoaf, on 12/16/2008, -0/+4Not everyone has Photoshop-- since it's not a trivial amount of money to buy it, and not everyone wants to pirate it.
And anyway, on a mac, surely Preview can save it as a JPEG? And finally, doesn't the GIMP do this? - WiretapStudios, on 12/16/2008, -0/+4Seriously, I was scrolling through here to see if anyone wrote that...is it really that hard for people?
- RudolfDiesel, on 12/16/2008, -4/+8people Really need to learn what 'begs the question' means.... please, Please look it up before using it again...
- Chirp08, on 12/16/2008, -1/+5Sounds pretty low-res. I like to use the Pencil tool and recreate it in paint one pixel at a time to be sure I don't miss any details.
- crackintosh, on 12/16/2008, -2/+6Your AWESOME!
- franklymister, on 12/16/2008, -0/+4Oops! You used the phrase "begs the question" in an improper manner: http://begthequestion.info/cards/
- ruforealz, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3Foxit reader ftw
- franklymister, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3I'm amazed by how many supposedly educated people don't understand this very basic bit of English.
- gsxraddict, on 12/16/2008, -1/+4Open it in Windows or Mac Photoshop, save it. Its not hard, I just did it not but 20 minutes before I saw this on here.
- cheap2, on 12/15/2008, -3/+6Zamzar works great
- directrix13, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3convert filename.pdf jpg:outputfilename.jpg
ImageMagick is simply that. - mcrbids, on 12/16/2008, -1/+4I do, and I love them! Our software creates PDFs by the bazillions. Advantages?
1) Smooth display at any zoom level.
2) Easily created from many sources.
3) Open, documented file format, making it suitable for archival information.
4) Cross platform.
5) Portable - easily sent via email or whatever.
6) Compact: a full page PDF of text takes little more space than a simple ASCII file while retaining formatting.
I think you are confusing a bloated piece of crap (Adobe's Acrobat, which was actually pretty decent until version 6) with the file format. Try viewing PDFs with Foxit and the difference will astound! - Innuendo24, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3paint.net doesn't mind doing it...
- moskrin, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3ImageMagick... convert file.pdf file.jpg
- colonelxc, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3Wow, three good points in one comment. You sir deserve a gold star.
- jjustin01, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3Open the file in The GIMP (free for anyone to install - http://www.gimp.org/ ); select the page you want to convert; set the size you want the image to be; save as JPG.
If in Photoshop: the same steps apply (although The GIMP is free)
I'm not too impressed with MakeUseOf.com's tutorials. They are typically overly complicated. - pilott, on 12/16/2008, -0/+3JPEGS are for photographs, or when you don't care if the image looks like crap. PDFs generally have a lot of text and vector art and if you don't want halos around everything save it as a png (or GIF if you must).
- dialector, on 12/18/2008, -0/+2Sorry, the popular usage of the term has changed enough for this title to be legitimate.
It is no longer just another way of referencing petitio principii. - Popeiler, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Technically, division by zero can be modified to show any result desired, but that's why it's undefined. In either case, buried for division by zero.
- shrapnel09, on 12/16/2008, -1/+3Yuck! SnagIt sucks. Just use print screen or alt+print screen. Then open Paint or Photoshop or Paint.NET and paste it in there.
If you have to have an application, use HardCopy.
If you have to have an application, instead of spending $20 on SnagIt, use Hardcopy

- Maurik, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Dugg for telling me about youconvertit.com
- Nicoon, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Why would anyone ever want to convert something to JPEG?
- davengineer, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2I agree, Adobe Acrobat is incredibly slow. I've been using Foxit Reader and it works great so far.
- cawpin, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Acrobat 8 is actually back up to snuff. It isn't a slow hog anymore.
- phosphite, on 12/16/2008, -0/+21) Zoom to page
2) Print-Screen (or Alt-Print-Screen to capture the current window),
3) MsPaint.exe, save as JPG. (Do not profit.) - MtheoryX, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2By your very own logic, you must be a PC fanatic then.
- lidong, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2use gmail's pdf viewer in any browser.
google just turns each page to image. - revsd5, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2I sure hope this is a joke.
- MtheoryX, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Any app on a Mac that can open it can also save it out as virtually any other format.
You can additionally use AppleScript or Automator (if you're timid with scripting) to batch convert easily. - theblacknight, on 12/17/2008, -0/+2I believe the following works too:
convert filename.pdf filename.jpg
That being said, ImageMagick needs some consistency in converting .tif files to .fits files. I have three different version and only the middle one does it right (neither the newest nor the oldest). - MtheoryX, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Holy crap! You already knew all this?
Where do I send my money? You definitely deserve some. - MtheoryX, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Acrobat 9 is pretty nice. It performs well, but takes a helluva lot of disk space to install on a Mac for some reason.
- SPLASTiK, on 12/16/2008, -0/+2Yep, this is what I do. I was actually surprised GIMP wasn't part of the list.
Upload it to a site and then download the picture? Waste of bandwidth to me... -
