- schizogony, on 12/20/2007, -3/+23Yeah, Foxit is the ONLY alternative as far as I'm concerned. Actually, it's the standard.
- pxa270, on 12/20/2007, -2/+19SumatraPDF makes Foxit look like bloatware
Adobe Reader 8.1.1: 167 MB (seriously, check the folder in Program Files)
Foxit Reader 2.2: 5.7 MB
SumatraPDF 0.7: 0.8 MB - Oniony, on 12/20/2007, -1/+12I used to dread accidentally clicking on PDF web links due to the shear time it took to launch Acrobat Reader and to get the browser back. Foxit starts up in no time so now there is so little difference opening a PDF and opening any other link that I no longer mind accidentally clicking them, it's actually pleasant working with PDF in many cases (brochures, floor-plans, certificates, stuff that needs printing). It is so strange that Adobe have not realised that a slow and sluggish user experience is actually damaging their product.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+7Do you work for Adobe? This is the 4th time you've chimed in to make the same statement.
It's true that FoxIT fails to render some pdf features but it affects maybe 1% of the pdfs that I have to work with. A slight inconvenience when measured against the bloat of Reader and (even worse) its persistent processes required to operate. - MattS, on 12/20/2007, -1/+7All the comments here and on the article site lead to this question: How good a list of 50 is it when the apparently most popular replacement (FoxIt) isn't even listed?
- JonLatane, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Although they mentioned Preview's built-in support for PDFs, they failed to mention how well PDF support is integrated into OS X system-wide. All print dialogues have a PDF button that allows you to print to a PDF with tons of options, QuickLook lets you see them even faster than Preview, and there are tons of other manipulation functions in Preview that aren't mentioned (like merging PDF documents, etc.).
- GreatSunJester, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Chiming in for Foxit Reader -- so much lighter and faster to load than Adobe's stuff. I download tech manuals and advertisments from distibuters frequently and have never found one that Foxit can not open correctly.
- plamoni, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Personally, I LOVE foxit. It's fast, lightweight, and free. The only problem I have had with any alternative is that some sites look too see if Acrobat is installed and won't take an alternative. So you end up having to install Acrobat anyway... Adobe makes really good software, but Acrobat is a piece and their whole updating system annoys me constantly.
- pwr4, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5I use a combination of Pdf995 and PdfEdit995 http://www.pdf995.com/
- JasonCox, on 12/20/2007, -3/+8Widely publish and freely available- unless of course you're Microsoft and want to include it in your office suite, then Adobe will cry to the EU and threaten to sue.
- bitspace, on 12/20/2007, -1/+6I couldn't determine whether or not your comment was sarcastic. More choices = more freedom for the consumer, and in general better overall product quality. If there are alternatives to your product that might be better at some things, that might drive you to compete based on features and quality.
- zip000, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3PDFescape looks pretty cool - I haven't seen any software that makes editing PDFs nearly that easy.
- minorthreat, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4been using foxit for years. Its a fraction of size and for what I use it for, its just as capable as adobe reader
- riah, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Foxit is a PDF reader only... this article is about PDF creators.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4I never trust other readers to be honest. Several times Foxit has been unable to render some of the complex output from my LaTeX documents. I don't care if it's bloated, with Adobe Reader I can be guaranteed that my document looks and prints exactly as I wanted it to be.
- ThirdPrize, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4I demand a register of PDF files. Won't sombody think of the children?
- sonnysavage, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Because FoxIt isn't free?
From The Article Title: "...50+ open source/free alternatives to Adobe Acrobat" - bat-21, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Foxit and Firefox (with PDF Download ext.) are a match made in heaven.
- liljay2k, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Foxit - http://www.foxitsoftware.com/purchase/pricing.htm
- riah, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Acrobat is for writing PDFs... Foxit is not a PDF writer. This article is about PDF WRITER alternatives.
- hadak, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3I use the PDF Download extension for Firefox (in conjunction to Foxit). When I click a PDF link, I am presented with an option to download it, open it, save it, cancel, etc.
- Macskeeball, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Why are you using underscores as periods?
- MattS, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2note to self: Epic fail. read AND COMPREHEND the article next time. end of self flagellation.
- antdude, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Are there any good editor that lets me enter text overlays and save PDFs? I hate using Adobe Reader with forms that won't let me save. I am not getting the full product.
- daveisfera, on 12/20/2007, -2/+4Unfortunately it doesn't render everything correctly, so I don't know if you can really call it "the standard".
- Niz1, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2yep deinately good if you have a slower computer opens documents way quicker.
- daveisfera, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3It's not as capable as Acrobat, because it doesn't render everything correctly.
- maseratij, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Foxit is good for viewing and some editing. You can not create a pdf from the clipboard, and printing anything takes forever, I mean a long time, a very very long time. I am at the end of my trial and wondering if I should upgrade adobe or bail.
- MattS, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1from FoxIt's website "...Foxit Reader is a free PDF document viewer and printer, with incredible small size (only 2.1 M download size), breezing-fast launch speed and amazingly rich ..." I will stipulate on the open source part. However, I think the article implied a OR rather than an AND.
- daveisfera, on 12/20/2007, -3/+4Acrobat 8 is definitely a big step in the right direction and the problem with Foxit is that doesn't render everything correctly.
- adderx99, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1microsoft can kiss my hairy ass.
http://www.google.com/search?q=SaveAsPDFandXPS&ie= ... - LogicBomB, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Anyone know the best alternative for adding a signature to PDF documents? That would be a life saver if there was some easy to use program that allowed this.
- uberfu, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1It's good that there are alternatives to making PDFs without the use of Adobe's software_ BUT - the title of this is misleading_ The FIPS [Federal Information Processing Standards] are government specifications for various methods of information grouping and dissemination_
The PDF - Portable Document Format is a proprietary technology that Adobe developed in the late 80's and early 90's_ It is however migrating to an open-standard and also a specific FIPS Spec -- ISO 32000_ It also adheres to several other FIPS Specs as well_ Adobe has always licensed the Specifications under an open-license_ You just have to pay big bucks for their software that utilizes the Technology_ - rip747, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I can't wait until Ruby on Rails is able to create PDFs like ColdFusion can
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1No - bloatware means that a piece of software has had additional features added, at the expense of disk space, and that many of these features are useless or not required.
- svivian, on 12/20/2007, -1/+2Awesome, now I can install 50 programs to read PDFs instead of just one.
- inajeep, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I was looking for a java library I can use to pass URLs to.
- mistergosh, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Reader. Doesn't write PDFs. It's about alternatives to Adobe Acrobat, not Acrobat Reader.
- mikehill33, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Cute PDF Writer works great.
- Atomic1fire, on 12/22/2007, -0/+1so does open office
- quamis, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1i also saw acrobat rendering stuff in weird modes... Currently i use foxit , but also have acrobat installed.
- Markpdotcom, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Get me alternatives to Flash, Dreamweaver and Photoshop (not gimp!) and then we'll talk! I always find it shocking how Adobe has a monopoly on design software and no one says anything about it!
- fotoman, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1another CLI option is 'display' part of the ImageMagick package.
- brownspank, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1How about Aptana for Dreamweaver?
- Macskeeball, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I just realized that to be more helpful, I should probably say that a period is "." (without the quotes) and an underscore is "_" (again, without the quotes).
- Markpdotcom, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Ha! Flex is awful! Its not a replacement for flash! I know HTML/CSS, they are still not replacements for streaming video. MS Paint? You really are a douche!
- llamaguy132, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1i think that he was pointing out that 50 choices are a little overwhelming as to were to start.
- DeadRooster, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Google Docs creates PDF's
- BenBenMan, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1But it could be made even more awesome ... what if there was Firefoxit?!?!
