- LANjackal, on 06/03/2009, -2/+75FoxIt FTW because of tabbed PDF viewing :)
- swagv, on 06/03/2009, -2/+50Reader is also the worst example of software updates on the Web. The bloatware tries to do full updates, not incrementals, 70% of the time I open it. It's bloatware + dribbleware.
- ldavid, on 06/04/2009, -0/+41What about open source SumatraPDF?
- chabs39, on 06/04/2009, -2/+33Foxit kicks ass
- lvizon, on 06/04/2009, -2/+29What, no Preview.app?
- noisymime, on 06/04/2009, -4/+31I don't mean to start a flamewar, but really why are we still even worrying about PDF readers? Its the modern equivalent of a text viewer and should just be built into the OS. Imagine if Windows shipped without Notepad and Wordpad!
OSX and virtually all linux distros have a (good) viewer as standard and the thought of not being able to read (not to mention write) a PDF out of the box is crazy. - franklymister, on 06/04/2009, -1/+24Whenever I'm building a site for a client, they have trouble understanding why it's bad to put PDFs behind links without warning.
They think I'm worried about the download size, and argue that their PDFs aren't that large - I always have to point out that it's not the download that matters, it's the resource-hogging, slow-launching, system-freezing, always-updating-itself mess that is Adobe Acrobat. - Khast, on 06/04/2009, -0/+18Unfortunately the reason bloatware even exists in these days is because of the computer hardware, and lazy programmers. I know that I will get dugg down. I know, with newer computers come newer features, even if the newer software does the same thing as the older software. (Reading PDF files, word processing, ect...)
In part, this is because computer limitations have been pretty much thrown in the recycle bin. Even if you are still running a computer with 256MB RAM, most OSes allow programs to "borrow" RAM by using a hard drive cache. In the days of the Commodore, DOS, MacOS1, ect..I noticed that some of the programs were very feature rich, and yet they didn't take up much more than 40KB (for the C64) or less than 368KB (for Windows/Mac OS1) And yet some of these programs had the same functionality of the programs that now take up 100+MB. - Acronym, on 06/04/2009, -0/+17Portable SumatraPDF ftw ;)
- melat0nin, on 06/04/2009, -1/+16PDF is an open standard so they couldn't sue them.
- str1fe, on 06/04/2009, -1/+14We're worrying about it because not every OS does ship with a PDF viewer. The vast majority of Windows users think Adobe Reader is all there is, which is really a damn shame.
Another damn shame is leaving off SumatraPDF in this article. I think it's still technically in beta, but I've been using it for about a year and it's great. It views PDFs, it has zoom and scroll, has next/previous page, and not much else. Just what I need. - andyeb, on 06/04/2009, -2/+15Quite. What kind of second rate OS comes without a lightweight PDF reader built in?
- sindex, on 06/04/2009, -0/+11You are not your computer. No one cares.
- jonesyno, on 06/04/2009, -0/+11You also have 0 MB of people who give a *****.
- MrSkills, on 06/04/2009, -0/+11It was a typo, silly. He meant "cornet", similar to a trumpet.
- Nephaestous, on 06/04/2009, -2/+12If Microsoft did it every one would scream bloody murder, and Adobe would probably sue them.
- gazboo, on 06/04/2009, -0/+10How does one go about acquiring ones own comet?
- TheVirus, on 06/04/2009, -0/+10Your video card sucks just as much as you do.
- inactive, on 06/04/2009, -0/+9I wish I was as awesome as you...
- Tr33fiddy, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8I just finished an XP reinstall, had a number of pdfs sitting around unread and was thinking "I really wish I didn't have at to install Acrobat".
What great timing, thanks. - lear, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8how about alternatives to pdf creators? and ones that don't put ads on the documents.
- unrealmp3, on 06/04/2009, -0/+8Still, what about programming efficiency and optimizations?
A minimalistic operating system is not a bad thing you know. - shredswithpiks, on 06/04/2009, -3/+11No, not Foxit. Foxit was awesome before it went all "hey, you know you want to install all these browser toolbars and ebay shortcuts! Everyone's doing it!"
When they take that crap out of the installer I might go back to it for another try, but I can't consider anything that tries to crap ads all over your machine a light alternative to adobe. - srg13, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7Are you kidding? Word documents need to die. It pisses me off whenever I see a .docx in my inbox - I'd much rather PDF...
- Mercedes383, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7So users should foot the hardware bill to cover for sloppy development? Righto.
- RonADiSH, on 06/04/2009, -0/+7Probably the lightest
- macmcraeart, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6not as crazy as a company as established as adobe releasing a text reader that sux as bad as adobe reader.
- Elranzer, on 06/04/2009, -1/+7FoxIt has gone the way of AVG. Once it was the light altenrative, then it became too popular and the new version is now bloated and filled with installers for toolbars and other crap.
Seems to be the sad fate for any popular freeware. - Engival, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6FoxIt is also bloated. Try out sumatraPDF. It's open source and blazing fast.
- insomniacal, on 06/04/2009, -0/+6Preview for me. And yes, Adobe is ridiculous with its huge load time and constant updates. Waste of hard drive space.
- Sirocco, on 06/04/2009, -0/+5Enjoy continually upgrading your computer to keep up with your crappy bloatware.
- adasha, on 06/04/2009, -0/+5/s ?
- LucasHenderson, on 06/04/2009, -2/+6I used to HATE pdf, back when I ran Windows. Now I actually prefer it, since it takes less time to open than Open Office. Of course, on the rare occasion I do use Windows, I stick to Sumatra PDF.
- stutimandal, on 06/04/2009, -2/+6Ghostview rocks! It is open source. In the windows version at least, you can also convert the PDF file to PNG, PS, EPS, etc formats.
- winterspan, on 06/04/2009, -0/+4Don't listen to this guy... The toolbar/shortcut stuff is kept totally transparent and can be easily unchecked during the install. It simply provides them a revenue source for doing all the work. There is no hidden install of anything.
- sindex, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5I love FoxIt Reader. I use CutePDF to "print" documents into PDF forms as well. F Adobe's security-risk-laden bloatware.
- rjcz, on 06/04/2009, -1/+5Search works for me (it is not a "as you type" search). Highlight and copy works fine - just press and hold CTRL and select the area with the mouse.
Your only point that stands is the lack of support for forms.
Don't spread fud, please. - Fubeman, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4Buried for no mention of Preview.
- Swivelstick, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3Hale-Bopp or Halley's Comet?
- kupa, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3I didn't notice any of those things in my latest install of Foxit on Windows 7 -- and even if there was, is it really that hard to uncheck a box? Foxit is a company out to make money, they make a damn nice and fast PDF Reader for free, but they're not out there to be nice, they need to make money just like others.
I'm not going to run toolbars or anything, but I'm not going to begrudge a company that offers them -- at least they ask you. Unlike Reader which installs ***** services and require you to reboot your machine (WTF?). - unrealmp3, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4Add Sumatra PDF to that list
http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ind ... - bobbknight, on 06/04/2009, -1/+4Foxit.
- Genma, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3sumatra is faster than foxit but no tabs.
- LoudMusic, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3PREACH IT!
It's not just the programs, it's the operating systems too. I don't need Vista or OS X's blingy interface hogging my hardware resources. I need my damn programs to open in a timely fashion, and menus to appear when I click on them. At least in Vista and Ubuntu I can switch to a really slimmed down UI with a few clicks. Last I checked there was no way to disable quite a few of the animations / transparencies / gradients in OS X. I'm not saying it's not pretty, it's just wasteful. - unrealmp3, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3To Adobe developers
It is not because computer have more RAM nowaday that you must fill it without mercy. Other programs than yours also need some, stop being so selfish. - SpruceCaboose, on 06/04/2009, -0/+3You could trust it if there weren't so many recent vulnerabilities and *seemingly* indifference from Adobe about prompt patching of their software.
- GraceHead, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2PDF-Xchange Viewer ... i can't say enough about it
- MrSkills, on 06/04/2009, -0/+2Never encountered a PDF that didn't open in preview, but funnily enough I have occasionally had the opposite problem - sometimes Preview opens dodgy PDFs perfectly, so you don't realise there's a problem. So I keep a copy of Reader installed just to double-check if I'm sending something to be printed.
