- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -32/+130Great - so now you can have the eye candy that you want from Vista, but miss out on the backend performance improvements that are the REAL reason to upgrade to Vista.
You can add a body kit to a Civic to make it look like a Lamborghini ... but underneath it is still a Civic. - GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -48/+143Only this looks like absolute ***** and Vista doesn't.

1. Any talk of software becoming incompatible with XP is just spreading FUD. Comparing XP compatibility with 98 is like apples and oranges. XP was the first home version of Windows to be based on the NT kernel. 98 and ME are based on a different kernel. The move from 98/ME to XP was a much bigger move than XP to Vista. There's a lot of software that still works with Win2k because it's based on the same kernel as XP, and I believe Vista is based on NT as well.
2. Build your own PC and you can use whichever OS you want, XP included. You'll probably even be able to configure a pre-built box from IBUYPOWER or someone like that with XP instead of Vista if that's what you wanted to do. You don't have to use Vista unless you're buying a Dell, IBM, Gateway, etc.
@tokenuser
Installing Vista on your current hardware is more likely to slow your system down than speed it up. The only reason a new Vista PC will perform better is because of the Core 2 Duo in it and the 1GB+ of ram. I bet if you take any Vista box and install XP on it, it would probably perform better. If you want improved search, use Windows Live desktop search or whatever it's called, or Google Desktop, or Coppernic.
Improved performance with Vista and the phasing out of XP are all FUD at this point. XP has mainstream support until 4/14/2009, which includes some no-charge support and free updates that don’t deal with security issues. It then goes on extended support until 4/8/2014; that's SEVEN more years. Extended support covers fee based technical support, and most importantly, security related updates. XP isn't going away anytime soon. - kypen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+61As opposed to impersonally using Beryl?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -25/+82Just because the updated UI is the thing Microsoft is marketing the most to advertise the Vista "experience" doesn't mean that it is the only noteworthy new feature of that OS. If you can't comprehend that, congratulations, you just bought into Microsoft's PR *****.
Besides, it doesn't matter what you think of Vista (even if you don't know what it's features are beyond the UI). In a few short months, you will be hard pressed to find a decent PC without Vista pre-installed. And that's when software will start becomming incompatible with XP (just like most current software is incompatible with Windows 98). An upgrade is inevitable. - Nitro187, on 10/12/2007, -13/+67Any version of windows eh.....
I'm going to load up Windows 1.0... just to see....
/sarcasm - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -37/+89there is more to Vista than the UI. don't worry about it come to think of it, it's probably over your head anyway. *ooooo something shiny*

- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44The Mac has 3D windows? You didn't even download it did you.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -11/+45I love the "omg where do I buy this for my Windows computer?" comments in Beryl video threads

Just like games are 3D on a 2D monitor, right? So whats the point of making games in 3D if we are playing it on a 2D monitor? So lets make all games 2D because, according to timdigg, its a waste of power and resources to make things 3D.
*inserts foot in mouth* - Firehunter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31::blink:: ::blink:: Have you missed the 50 million articles stating the reason why when running Vista it appears that all of your memory is being used?
It does it on purpose. . .See SuperFetch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superfetch#SuperFetch)
I am seriously dumbfounded at all the comments about how Vista is so bad because it uses all the resources to benefit the user without causing a performance hit. - EntropyMan, on 10/12/2007, -9/+36I realize it's a minor point, and I'll probably get dugg down, but this whole "3D Desktop" meme really irks me.
Vista, Beryl, etc.. are not 3D Desktops.
Adding a little depth sorting and shadow effect to 2D windows makes them at most 2.5D, not 3D. Even Vista's perspective angling of 2D windows makes them "barely" 3D. The stuff in the window is still 2D. The stuff on the Beryl cube (the surface of the cube) is still 2D. The windows themselves have no depth. Even paper on my real desktop has some depth.
"3D Desktop" should really mean the items on the desktop look and behave as if they're 3D. That means, if you tilt it, you see a new perspective, not the same one warped, bent, rolled up, or made transparent. A clock on a 3D desktop is a 3D clock. Icons are 3D. And though windows may be portals to other 3D spaces, they have real depth -- i.e., there is some reason other than special effects to angle them.
All this other "3D" stuff is just wanking IMO. - jues, on 10/12/2007, -12/+37Oh, aye - sure there are upgrades to Windows Vista over the NT5 kernel (2k, XP), but I think comparing the difference between Win98 and XP is a bit over the top.

http://davc73.free.fr/madotate/Madotate_2.02.02.zip - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22@ignotus:
I use XP. I am quite happy with XP, and since my primary computer is a work supplied laptop I am unlikely to upgrade that box (and I have been using Google Desktop since it was beta).
However, another computer I own that is "Designed for Windows XP" and is 4 years old, with no upgrades, runs Vista beautifully. I have turned off the eye candy - I am not a Mac user, I have minimal Mac envy - and the machine loads apps faster and curently appears to be making better use of the resources available. This is the power of Vista. Its the backend. Unfortunately UI is easier to market to the masses. A soccer Mom buying a computer will have her eye glaze over if they start hearing about prefetching, cache oprimisations, thread throttling, multithreading, etc. But they like the "glass" interface of Aero - so thats what marketing has focused on.
I need to do some video editting on that machine, so will be bumping the RAM from its stock 512MB to 2GB shortly, but the ATi Radeon 9200 is behaving itself nicely. I don't game on that machine (actually, I dont game on ANY of my machines - thats what my console is for, and my chipped Xbox is great for my occassional gaming efforts.
Vista run really well on older hardware - as well as, if not better, than a machine that was previously running XP. Its a myth that you need the latest and greatest hardware to run Vista (a conspiracy perpetrated by hardware vendors?). If you want the eye candy, then you might need to do the hardware upgrade - but that is an option you choose, its not forced upon you. - DivisibleByZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"No impact on performance" I get requirements like that a lot at work.
- CoreBurn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Gee maybe if the damn website wasn't down...
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Did you catch this phrase immediately following that one?
"After some diggings, i managed to find it with an english interface at..." - VinceNoir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Being a Beryl fan on Gentoo Linux, I think it goes without saying that I'm probably biased, but... it looks like this app totally misses the point of having 3D window management/UI organization. Sure it looks kind of cool, but that's not why you have a 3D window manager. The reason you have a 3d Window/UI space manager is to be more productive. Some concrete examples with Beryl:
1. The scale feature in Beryl allows you to see all of your running applications all at once in live thumbnails. This means that if there is any activity in any window, you see it right at the moment it happens. And task switching this way is MUCH faster than Alt-Tab ever was. Interestingly, the scale feature isn't even a 3D feature at all, but it sure looks like it's missing from the plugin discussed here.
2. The Beryl interface makes multiple desktops much easier to grasp for those who are a little challenged by the concept. I showed it to my boss who never really "got" multiple desktops. He said, "Ahhh... now THAT makes sense". And he wants Beryl on his system now.
3. Two more non-3D features of Beryl are adjustable translucency and adjustable zoom. If you've got overlapping windows and you need to quickly see what's happening in the window behind without losing focus on the window in front, you can use the Alt key together with the mouse scroll wheel to adjust the translucency of your foreground window so you can see through it to the window behind it. I do this a lot when waiting for something to finish in the background while reading e-mail or documentation. The zoom feature is just nice for when you really need to see something up close and don't want to have to mess with switching resolutions or using a lame "magnifier" program. Using the "Windows" key and the scroll wheel you zoom in or out of the desktop up to 13X. Again, this is lacking in these "3D" desktop plugins.
Not to fault the developers of any of these programs, but they really seem to see 3D desktops as just a "cool" thing to have and totally miss the extra non-3D things that systems like Beryl bring to the desktop. - asimo8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16How does this compare to Beryl or Compiz? Any videos of it around?
- chaos7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13why would you even want this
- ronin2040, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Digg has no impact on my performance, I dont do anything at work either way o.0
- justice7, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15i dont know how or why this happened, but i saw a positive score on the digg me down!!! post, and i had to + it.
Follow the leader? Maybe..
Funny? Absolutely. - racekarl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Have you use beryl? On my installation, when I spin the cube, windows absolutely do have a thickness (looks like about 1/4 inch on my screen), and are layered in their Z-order. Maybe it's a configurable setting...
That being said, "compositing" is definitely a better term than "3D" to describe this type of desktop interface. - jues, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22@ignotus - why the hell do people digg down the sane comments?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"3D Desktop on any version of Windows"
"Make your Desktop 3D on Windows 2000/XP"
2000/Xp count as any? - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9readme file says it works with Windows98 too.
- greymaxcat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11This is stupid. Just give me a command prompt.
- PlaneLayz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12It simply doesnt compare.
- christianw, on 10/12/2007, -13/+20old news. heres a duscussion about this version from 2004
http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=165513&st=0 - BryanJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It doesn't even come near it, still a step forward :|
Heres a screenshot of it "3d'ing" windows, has trouble doing custom ui apps though
http://img124.imageshack.us/img124/3258/desktopej4.jpg - docjeff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Since it doesn't work on *any* version of Windows, such as my Windows Server 2003, this is buried for inaccuracy.
- Miche1987, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I smell irony in this comparison!
- Brennan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You're an absolute idiot. Why would you list QNX there comparing it to windows and then say that you know what real OSes are because you know about QNX. Are you trying to sound cool or something, you didn't even read QNX's website!
QNX is a real time operating system, and isn't even really an operating system that you can use. It's more for embedded devices and things like this that need real time support. It is by no means a desktop operating system and about as far away from windows as you can get, since MS doesn't even really have any products that even compete with this.
This is the most retarded comparison you can make and shows you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about, about anything.
Also, "restarded"? I think you're retarded. - Darcy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Have you ever used Vista? or are you basing this off the endless number of FUD stories you have probably been reading (like most people on digg)?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7it doesn't compare. with beryl you get functional angled windows; with this, any angled windows are static screenshots of them.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Any video or picture mirror of this?
- battleroyalex, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20after personally using beryl. This blows
- Loonacy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Basically, the ONLY thing it does is gives you a button that allows you to angle your windows. I'm not sure why they're calling it a "desktop" because it doesn't change your desktop at all.
All in all, it's pretty useless unless you deal with a lot of open windows and have screen real estate to spare for the angled windows. - n0c0ntr0l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Give the man a hand.... A true 3d desktop would be a bit like the 3d digg RSS page that some guy created. It would have depth to where you put your objects... so X, Y and z coordinates not just X and Y at an angle. You would have to navigate around a bit like you would in a game.... THAT is a real 3 desktop
- thecardmechanic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7After having used beryl.... This is like finding an Atari and saying it does the same thing as an Xbox 360...
- saifrc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm using this on my XP-powered work laptop because, frankly, I don't have the option of:
- Upgrading to Vista
- Doing my work in Linux and running Beryl/Compiz/etc.
- Installing *anything*
The fact that this works without installation is enough for me to try it. I enjoy using Beryl on my Ubuntu machine at home, but I don't have a choice of OS at work. My company only *just* recently pushed SP2 to all of us. Before moving to XP a few years ago, they were on NT -- didn't even make the move to 2000. I don't believe that we're going to Vista any time soon, and I can guarantee that they have no plans to port all the proprietary software I use to Linux.
All of you complaining that this looks like crap compared to Vista or Beryl or whatnot, at least it's better than nothing. If you want this feature, that is. - Mike.Dunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Doesn't work on my second Monitor, Just works on my primary display?
- Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5NO *****! But its still better than XP. And if your computer cant handle it, its a piece of *****, get a new one.
