I will share with you diggers the single trick to make your photos shine (in less than 1 minute)
local contrast enhancement (google it for articles on it. luminous landscape has it)
But basically it adds contrast locally (better than the contrast)
Do an unsharp mask with the following.
Amount:10-20 %
Radius :50
Threshold: 0
It does very little sharpening. It can blow out highlights a little so be carefull with the amount.

Nice quick and easy method to make a picture look like a painting while maintaining contrast. Dial down the saturation a bit and you're done. Baste, stuff and bake at 425 for an hour.

duplicate your image to a new layer
gausian blur the new layer (play with the amount)
change the blend mode to Overlay
I like to then add a couple adjustment layers to the blured layer - levels and curves to tweak the effect. - pascal21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1another good way to use this without blowing out the highlights would be as follows:
do the unsharp mask until you have the desired detail in your middle in lower values (disregard the highlights, let the m blow out)
next, click the little box next to the last step on your history window (should be the last unsharp mask you did)
after that select the history level (click the actual word) that will take you one step before your unsharp masks (will read -blank-, unsharp, unsharp, unsharp, etc. you want the -step- level) and this will undo the masks, but leave the data in your cache.
next use the history brush to bring out the details of the unsharp mask, while leaving your highlights the same.
this is a useful tool for any photo, for a variety of changes from levels to contrast. i suggest a history brush flow of around %50 and a hard brush setting
