- WebmastuhB, on 01/26/2009, -1/+21Umm. Did anyone else get some .gz file and NOT a webpage?
- brainnovate, on 01/26/2009, -0/+14I can say that for the Mac, filezilla kinda sucks, and i have had bad luck with cyberduck too. Agree that Firebug rules. If you have used Inkscape, please post your experiences.
- ThirdPrize, on 01/26/2009, -1/+9Why does Gimpshop get a mention when it hasn't been updated for 2.5 years? That must be a dead peoject by now?
- Tunguska, on 01/26/2009, -0/+6Where's KomodoEdit?
Firebug FTW - ryanadc, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5I can't speak about Inkscape, but ditto on Firebug. I'd also recommend the Web Developer Toolbar for Firefox
- Benno, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5Jedit is by far the most capable text editor on the list... once it's configured properly. If there was good vi-alike keybinding mode for jedit it would be nearly perfect for me.
dugg because firebug just saved me at least an hour today. - AlphaArietis, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5What the duck? Every time I want to access this site I get a zip file. Should I worry?
- aladrin, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4True, but no app will make you a better web designer. They can only help make things easier.
- CeruleanRed, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Apparently gzip is on the list.
- overkil6, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4the domain looks to be down...
- TheHolyGrenade, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Some good ones in there, although I miss a bit more thorough reviewing of the products.
As Xythian mentioned, Camstudio and Notepad++ are excellent products, and Firebug. I tried using KompoZer for a while too, but it didn't really do it for me.
One question though (on a sidenote, not necessarily related to this page), is it just me, or do reviewers always seem to be a little biased when writing reviews of open source software? I mean, of course you want to support the creating of open source software (love the scene myself), but if a commercial product is better, why not say so, instead of boasting the free version just for the sake of doing so? - branndon, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3It's "many" not "meny" and open source means anyone can edit it, thus making it better, or worse, depending on their needs, so no, open source and free are not the same thing.
- xythian, on 01/26/2009, -2/+5Excellent list. CamStudio and Notepad++ are personal favorites.
- Lykoss, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Ugly apps
- r3bol, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3I like to code web pages in the browser.
Check out these FF addons:
Firebug
HTML editor 2.0
Codetch - jffotooz, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3They are probably trying to enable compression to handle the digg traffic - I am getting the zip download as well
- ejde, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Wither the Firefox Web Developer Toolbar? The live CSS editing is absolutely genius.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/60 - dmightx, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2So this guy gets buried for asking an honest question?
- diggdatt, on 01/28/2009, -0/+2Its missing Paint.Net, but then again its windows only and only for XP and newer
- jannefoo, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Some of the painting programs were just meh and I prefer Virtualdub for screen recording instead of Camstudio which is prone to crashing. Dugg for using one page to list them all instead of multipage ad whoring.
- yessuz, on 01/26/2009, -4/+6I allways had a question - Are there any advantages of opensource expept it is open source?
How meny of the web designer Edit the code?
If you have the sofware for free - is it a big difference - it is open source or closed source?
Maybe we should talk about FREE software, not open source?
P.S. I think, that paying for GOOD software is ok. Reasonable price, of course. And if you get good supprot. - inactive, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Not sure what happened with Inkscape there has been very little development in the last year.
- LoveWidescreen, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2Great list! I've been using Bluefish through Cygwin (also free) for my HTML editing and WinSCP for transferring to the host for several years now. I even test all of my code via Apache within Cygwin. GIMP still needs work to compare with even the basics in Photoshop, but it's definitely the best open-source program of its kind out there.
- ShiftyBizniss, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2Yes
- yessuz, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2Hey, at least I can speak at least 2 another languages (English is not my native) :)
And sorry for the mistakes - when I'm in hurry I make stupid mistype errors :) - zero, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2buried for linking to download
- radye, on 01/27/2009, -0/+2I used to like that magazine
- MtheoryX, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1He's probably getting buried for poor grammar.
That's why I'm burying him. - mozaic2001, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2Wow...great list.. my favorite firebug is included...
- MorganPhoenix, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I'm a production artist who uses Inkscape and Adobe Illustrator... I know the Inkscape UI better, so I use it more often—I love it.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1> "Why does Gimpshop get a mention when it hasn't been updated for 2.5 years? That must be a dead peoject by now?"
Heh. That seems to be somewhat common in these "best of open source" type stories. There's at least one in every list. I once saw a list only a couple years ago that had the original XMMS on it. I mean, wtf? For me, that killed the author's credibility right then and there.
I don't know if that says more about the quality of the now-dead software or more about the lack of worthy and modern alternatives on the scene. - moothemagiccow, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1something's configured wrong on their server
- rrife, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2Notepad.
- DJUltraDarkness, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Its the mystery .gz grabbag! Open it up and run all executables inside!
- static07, on 01/26/2009, -1/+2Hmm,
I've atleast expected Open Komodo & Aptana to be in that list.
But then again, its just another list... nothing you can't find out googling. A webdesigner is not defined by the tools he/she uses. - askirkland, on 07/24/2009, -0/+1I did too... thought it was just me.
- bryanbmartin, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Another vote for firebug + web developer toolbar for firefox. Makes debugging endurable.
- DBeta, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1I've spent many good hours with Inkscape. I'm not an artist, but I love tracing pop culture memories so I have perfect quality pictures for my memory. My avatar, as you can see, is Zoidberg, traced in inkscape.

http://dbeta.com/byond/ZoidBerg.png
I've also traced drawings for friends who wanted to see their artwork on a computer, without looking like a crappy scan. Inkscape works great for this, but the UI does have a few rough spots. All together, it's easy to use and free, so if I need vector art, inkscape is my "go-to" program. - seanansari, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1Great List ..Thanks for sharing
- xslick, on 01/28/2009, -0/+1When it comes to freeware notepad++ FTW
- metawake, on 02/08/2009, -0/+1The online app worth checking out is http://www.joomla-builder.com
They save your time if you are web designer using open source Joomla! CMS - as I can see they generate
joomla installation file with pre-built components such a Online Shop, Forum,Gallery, etc.
A kind of CMS lab. - dawngordon, on 09/14/2009, -0/+1dream weaver is another good one to convert your documents into html, then it is only a matter of taking that coding and placing into the website, comments etc..wherever html can be placed you can use that coding for it
- DBeta, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Also, the latest versions of GIMP pretty much kill the need for GIMPShop. The toolbars can now be set to group together with the image window, and always be on top of it. A simple change that made the UI about 20x more functional.
- isalkrenz, on 01/26/2009, -0/+1Thx man..
http://www.islwebdesign.com - globotang, on 01/29/2009, -0/+1Really nice list. Thanks for sharing.
- Ndelangen, on 01/27/2009, -0/+0Yeah expecting Aptana in there too, although I'm using it anymore, it's a big project, that IS used by a lot of people.
- Ndelangen, on 01/27/2009, -0/+0I go for Open-Source because I know the program I have today, will always be available. I won't be forced to upgrade because of some proprietary incompatibility.
If the user base is large enough someone will always come up and take over if the current main developer suddenly stops.
If you buy your software, and the company that supplied you with that software goes away.. You'll have to find some other software and company to supply it.
No piece of software will meet your needs forever, because needs change, but if someone else controls the source of the software, THEY control whether the software changes with you, or against you. - imagesplace, on 07/04/2009, -0/+0I prefer Topystyle over Notepad++.
http://www.design2work.net - soltys, on 01/26/2009, -2/+2Crap Software for Web Designers
- CarrieC, on 01/26/2009, -1/+0I also got a gzip file. Scanning for virus................
ClamXav says no virus.

What is Digg?
The Digg Toolbar for Firefox lets you Digg, submit content, and keep track of Digg even when you're not on the Digg site. Download the official
