pretty lame - vinnyvenus, on 12/21/2007, -1/+17I can't see anybody replacing Adobe Photoshop with Splashup. Most the people who can't afford photoshop will likely pirate it.
- LeifErikson8, on 12/21/2007, -3/+15lol, buying software.
- SyntraFTW, on 12/21/2007, -1/+12Wow, This server must be in Molasses-land.
- xtc46, on 12/21/2007, -2/+11wtf? How is gmail a replacement for Outlook? they arent even competing products. This list sucks.
- wrenchone, on 12/21/2007, -2/+9Use Flickr rather than Aperture? I wasn't aware that Flickr worked with RAW files now.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -2/+7Many of the items on this list are rather questionable. Some are for a very limited subset of the original apps. Like faxzero instead of a fax machine. Of course, faxzero doesn't let you RECEIVE faxes. Or chartAll instead of Excel. I use everything else in Excel about 100 times as much as I use the charting.
- vinnyvenus, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6this list sucks.
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -1/+6What is a free alternative to Windows Movie Maker? If anyone knows I would really appreciate the info.
- lohphat, on 12/21/2007, -4/+8As long as you don't mind the "free alternatives" mucking up document formatting so that those you send documents to don't care, then fine. Otherwise, your business contacts and customers just view you as someone who doesn't value time lost compensating.
- widgetmaker, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5Whoever made this list has clearly never worked in an environment where you have to use real software. No business is ever going to adopt these kinda products. If you're that fussed about not paying for software for private use just torrent the real thing not lame rip offs.
- KaJuN4, on 12/21/2007, -1/+5I've found Paint.net to be quite a good free alternative to Photoshop. Granted I don't do work as elaborate as some people but it works very well for my purposes.
- aaabatteries, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3yeah but it sucks. =P
- kaythecraven, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4Just get open office. . . covers most of these.
- shaggy25, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3:(
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -1/+4***** yo momma.
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Why not - surely the point of an alternative is that you use it INSTEAD of Office - therefore you have no Office Docs in the first place.
- shaggy25, on 12/21/2007, -0/+3Apple fanboys are more likely to...
- AlvesLopes, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Wow, pretty bad comparison! I guess u never used photoshop...
Also it's interesting that most of those apps are targeted to business and you "replace" them with toy apps for personal use.
Do you actually have/had a job? - Atomic1fire, on 12/21/2007, -2/+4why do you judge it based on a number of diggs
not all digg viewers are signed up
so that method is kind of inaccurate because there could be hundreds more viewing it without a digg account coming from digg - KloroFormd, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3What good is an alternative to an operating system when you have to have an operating system to run it?
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Because I just love the idea of having to rely on an Internet connection to complete basic tasks. I value stability, and part of that is not having to stop because I temporarily lost my connection.
- zushiba, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3Because unless I'm missing it there is no 'views' count and diggs is the only thing quantifiable in this situation especially considering the site itself is dead.
I agree it isn't the best possible meter by which to measure but it's what I got. - endlessoul, on 12/21/2007, -1/+3So then why post the link?
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1The thing is... i want to be able to access everything locally, it's great and all to be able to get it anywhere, and for free, but i would rather in some cases be able to just open a program without a internet connection.
- Carmilla07, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1I use Onenote as my primary way of taking notes for school and stikkit is not even close to being an alternative. It doesn't even begin to come close to what onenote does. It's still cool and everything but it's just definatly not a OneNote alternative.
Also why do you need a free web based alternative for the desktop calculator? What's wrong with the one that come with Windows? - GirlSeaShell, on 12/21/2007, -1/+2Both Wesabe and Preezo are pretty cool apps.
- Dedpoet, on 12/21/2007, -3/+4Dear Giant Industry-Leading Customer That Represents a Huge Amount of My Company's Business-
I know you asked for our project timelines to be submitted in MS Project and our cost analysis to be submitted in Excel format. I know that you asked for our fax number so that you could fax your inventory releases to us and we could pay you by purchase order.
However, we support free software here so we'll be doing our office documents in Google Docs. Please send me your Google account name so that I can add you to my share list. Also, if you could be so kind as to mail your releases to me that would be great. We use free fax software instead of a fax machine and cannot receive faxes, only send them. Oh, and we don't use purchase orders here, we pay via PayPal. I've gone ahead and increased your piece prices by 3% to account for their processing fee.
Looking forward to doing business with you! - Atomic1fire, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Its not the os per say
its the desktop that it replaces
the same way that the desktop is the area where everything you need at once is
a webdesktop is where your files and in the case of youos your favorite websites/webapps is
because you can "port" them to your desktop - inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1So what- who cares how many diggs its has - the point is that hundred of visitors could be coming from other sources as well. Digg is not the only source of traffic.
- matu666, on 01/19/2008, -0/+1I had my little say here http://lickmystyle.com/stuff/ditch-your-desktop--- ...
there is just too much to say about it to put here - AceofSpades19, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1free software FTW
- nickdngr, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1The only advantage to an alternative web-based desktop for me is how they interact with the web. For instance, I can't access YouOS (server block), but I can access StartForce, which lets me use instant messengers (typically blocked at work).
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Most people who can't afford photoshop DONT NEED IT - use a free alternative you idiots.
- guy6600crazy, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1bcoz it will cache it later via the same link!
try now! the link is working. - hiraikotsu, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Why visit a website to make a simple calculation when you can do it right from the Google search box in Firefox?
- inactive, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1'Per se', not 'Per Say'
- guy6600crazy, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3Even dugg mirror was unable to cache it!
http://duggmirror.com/software/25_Popular_Desktop_ ... - SDL486, on 12/21/2007, -2/+2This list is kinda bad....just try linux for the average computer user it can completely replace windows
- AceofSpades19, on 12/21/2007, -0/+0I wasn't aware that Google Docs was licensed with a GPL-compatible license, so technically it isn't free software
- Xlr8ed, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3I find these types of list funny for a few reasons other than the fact that a lot of the apps just are not even close to measuring up to the originals. Some of these apps are TOTALLY cheap compared for that they do.
Let’s look at Apple’s Aperture for $299.99
This summer I moved up the camera ladder and bought a SLR….for $699.99, then I bought a grip for it at $99, and two extra batteries, $79 each. Now let’s not forget lens, I bought 3 of those, $1199, $799, and $499. With a few other sorted items for about $299. It’s a decent starter set up that I am happy with and the grand total was $3673.99. And this ass hat wants me to use Flickr?? Aperture was not created for generally photo work, it was created for working with RAW files….I actually purchased Lightroom, but if I was on Mac, I would have bought Aperture.
For ***** sake people, if you are just sending a few emails to friends and family, Gmail is fine, but it doesn’t come close to Outlook for features. If you honestly believe that I know you have not a ***** clue how to use Outlook. Same goes for a lot of the apps on that page…. - zushiba, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3Kerplode after 94 diggs. Is this running on WordPress?
- lohphat, on 12/21/2007, -3/+3It's not an alternative if the file format is not compatible. Office doc formatting is usually the victim and causes waisted effort in correcting/compensating for the corruption. That alone eliminates any "savings" on using the real thing.
- aaabatteries, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1no, it is.
I mean, at least the concept. It's a great idea, especially if you can access it from mobile devices. I mean, you could take your desktop on the go without having incredible spec's and such. Of course, you could use remote desktop too...but...idk. It's not completely there yet, but it's a great concept. - BinaryFragger, on 12/21/2007, -1/+1I love the tabbed interface of Paint.Net.
And contrary to what many people say about .net applications, Paint.Net runs fast.
http://www.getpaint.net/ - AceofSpades19, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1I use GIMP or Krita to edit photos
- Atomic1fire, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1startforce.com maybe but thats pushing it
- Schaef2493, on 12/21/2007, -4/+3Doesn't Windows Movie Maker come with Windows?
- wiitarded666, on 12/21/2007, -2/+1mirror anyone?
