- andregriffin, on 11/05/2008, -0/+9Site seems down to me, but I want to share one of my favorite obscure analysis/editing tools that my audio engineering professor at Georgia State University turned me on to.
Spear: http://www.klingbeil.com/spear/
You can visualize and modify individual partials/harmonics within an audio file. It's super sweet for computer music and sampling. - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -1/+7It's not an audio editor. It's pretty much just a sampler/sequencer with a kick ass mixer. It's the best sequencer out there, though... so I agree with your sentiment.
- collution, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Pretty good list, keep in mind there are "Free" audio editors which MediaSight (the submitter) failed to mention. If they were paid, i'd say this list sucks.
- annjay, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6wow...wonderful list!
- poppacherry, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4the only reason why pro tools is an "industry standard" (which it isnt) is because digidesign beat everyone to the home studio consumer market. as a result, the studios adapted to the files their clients were bringing in. the first, but not even close to being the best. further proof of this is the interface of pro tools 8. it totally rips off logic pro!
- Prod1gy, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Pro Tools is a DAW, not just an audio editor, therefore i'd hope you would get more out of it.
However i'm more of a Logic Pro type of guy. Pro Tools is a scam unless you're willing to fork over a lot of money for the good stuff (plugins, hardware, etc.) - ExSlashdotter, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3So what.
ProTools is entirely too closed, ie, you HAVE to run digidesign hardware to run protools software. Plus, they get away with charging upwards of $250 simply for a dot-something software update. Its like "oh, you bought a new intel mac? sorry, thats $250+ to upgrade your PPC version..."
There are so many tools out there that are really, really great these days (Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, etc). You're really not going to eek out that last 1% of performance anyway, unless you're telling me that you're "studio" (aka house) was built with recording in mind. Most people don't go the extra mile to properly ground, give effective acoustic treatment, etc.
Not only that, but the digidesign hardware is so-so at best. You're still better off in most cases with Presonus or Motu gear anway, and spend a lot less.
Also, so much of the art/science of recording is experience and knowledge. Sure, the tools help, but all the money and musiciansfriend catalogs on the planet won't do the job for you.
//end rant from audio engineer - ExSlashdotter, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Arguably, ableton and reason are mostly synths and sequencers, not full-out audio editors.
For real editors, try Logic, Cubase, and Nuendo. Don't forget that Mac users get Garageband out of the box too. - Modestexcuse, on 11/05/2008, -2/+4You shouldn't be dugg down, pro tools is what my band and I use. I'd rather pay for a complete package and get a great audio track that is workable.
- diggdeep, on 11/05/2008, -1/+3Nobody needs to know 25 audio editors
- davidrools, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Free tools are always good to put on multiple machines, send to friends, or use at work. Then when you get serious, check out my favorites: ProTools, Ableton Live, and Reason.
- alexkim804, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2i'll take the girl in the thumbnail
- andregriffin, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't know. It runs fine on my Vista laptop, along with Pro Tools, Sonar, Reason, CSound, etc.
I'm an audio engineering student doing real work. What platform you work on is trivial. The real factor is what audio hardware you use, such as AD/DA converters, PCI cards, etc.
Spear was initially developed for OS9, the system of choice for users of older Pro Tools systems, hence why the program has a development advantage on that platform. Nowadays, the differences between OS and standard computer hardware are minimal. - mrsteveman1, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2You know what, i seem to see a pattern.
About once every few weeks, people put out lists of like 20-30 free apps that do something cool.
Why is it we have 20-30 of them? Aren't these things all (or mostly) GPL? Why can't we just focus on a few really good ones?
That's my other observation, a lot of times there are a bunch of them but none of them work very well. - inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Hell yes for Audacity!
- uncoolcentral, on 11/05/2008, -1/+2What about Reaper? http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
- nyls, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1The site is down. For an excellent reviewed list of free recording software see

" Currently SPEAR runs on MacOS X (PowerPC), MacOS 9 and Windows. For a variety of reasons SPEAR will probably operate better on MacOS X. "
I wonder what the "variety of reasons" are... - nyls, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Error is caused by the dot at the end of the link...! Here it is again:
http://www.software4free.org/recording.html - drgmdp, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1not free
- chrismix, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1your link is down too.
mirror plz? for either?? - drgmdp, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1OPTIONS
- diggdatt, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1I'm sick of these lists. Do they expect me to try every single app, to see what OS it runs on and which one is the best? Give me a list of the top 3 with a full review. buried
- joyywu, on 03/16/2009, -0/+0Wow,thanks, if you want to edit your flv editor at http://www.exp-flv.com or try youtube flv converter at http://www.flvsoft.com/flv_to_video ,both of them are free now
- NanoStuff, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Good thing they're digital.
- Beatmiser, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Mirror Mirror on the Wall?
- wyleyrabbit, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Seems that virtually everything on this list is for Linux.
- secrity, on 11/05/2008, -2/+2Three comments, and the site is toast.
- nyls, on 11/05/2008, -1/+1Re: free recording software:
Sorry to those people who could not reach the above link to the reviewed list of free recording software [putting a full stop at the end of a sentence that ends with a link ruins that link.....]. Here it is again without the full stop:
http://www.software4free.org/recording.html - inactive, on 11/10/2008, -0/+0I like Sound Forge although I have tried everything from Cool Edit Pro to Cakewalk and now strictly using Pro Tools for my web development and audio/video (multimedia) company. I prefer the professionalism and plugins that Pro Tools allow although I have tried Audacity and found it works well.
