mine says 7315 MB - Noctem, on 04/13/2009, -0/+44Because that's what I want to do - Manage 22 extensions for one web service.
- Smokeydabear, on 04/13/2009, -0/+27I remember when it first came out. Some kid in my class gave me an invite and I was so excited because I was one of the only people on campus to have it. It quickly replaced my crappy hotmail account.
- sexybobo, on 04/13/2009, -0/+22It is 7135 for every one.
Gmail started out with 1 gig every one matched them so they moved to 2 gigs every one started matching the 2 gig's of storage so they decieded to constantly slowly add more space if you look at gmail.com when not logged in it will show you the current count of how much space each person has.
And this wasn't google trying to be on the top this was google trying to get other people to try and excel not just match every one else which is why before gmail every one had like 50megs of free space.
People keep asking why gmail is in beta i think it is because they never want to stop improving so that no one else can stop either. I think gmail is a lot like chrome in that i don't think originally google wanted to do email but they did it just to get every one else off there lazy asses. - GrooTheWanderer, on 04/13/2009, -1/+22Maybe there's an extension to manage them.
- Yage2006, on 04/13/2009, -0/+16Author does not even know the correct amount of storage space on gmail which is its main feature at 8gb.
Kinda makes you wonder how much time he spent researching his article and those extensions.
/Buried for getting it wrong in the first sentence. - qwer777, on 04/13/2009, -0/+16that was my first thought. i had to glance up at the post date to see if the article was 4 years old.
- sexybobo, on 04/13/2009, -1/+16I remember being extremely popular with all the tech people in my high school because I was only person that could give them an invite that lasted a couple weeks but i did get a girl to flash me for an invite.
- Drull, on 04/13/2009, -0/+14Gmail is pretty decent as is.
- sHockz, on 04/13/2009, -1/+1422 firefox extensions for gmail alone? thats a little ridiculous just to update gmail.
- RegalBegal, on 04/13/2009, -0/+12"Dear Penthouse....
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+11this guy must be on the metric system
- quickgold192, on 04/13/2009, -2/+11i'd like to but there is no standalone app that can search through several years worth of email for that one document i need. Yes, I do need that feature a lot.
- CynicalTyler, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7@jsilva86: no you may not
- GovernmentsGun, on 04/13/2009, -0/+7This seems very out of date. Gmail has near 7gb of storage, and some of these extensions only work with FF1 - FF2.
- BoneStamp, on 04/13/2009, -0/+6Yup, mine is exactly the same. Although my google app domain accounts are slightly less.
- thedcam, on 04/13/2009, -2/+8More than anyone will probably ever use is possibly even more accurate.
- MadPotatoes, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5seems like this guy never checked out labs on gmail, plus as before mentioned he didn't even get correct amount of storage right ..
- kamikazeghandi, on 04/13/2009, -0/+5A lot of those do the same thing as another on the list. Like- multiple email checkers, lots of to-do list extensions, stuff like that. Just pick the best and stick with it.
- cheeselord, on 04/13/2009, -2/+7Does anyone realize Thunderbird does this and more. Hell almost every email client does all these things.
Google has become the new Apple... Minus the overpriced part. - Onion575, on 04/13/2009, -2/+7I wish I could switch from yahoo mail to gmail...
- serif69, on 04/13/2009, -2/+6Is there an extension to take it out of its 5-year-long beta?
- tonyrocks, on 04/13/2009, -3/+7um...so...you need to install 22 extensions to make gmail useful? I'm confused. Seems like lots of work.
- BoneStamp, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4Gmail Manager is my favorite inbox checker, although I would switch if I could find one that displayed multiple account inbox totals on the status bar (without clicking). Please advise if you have found one.
- lawnmowerguy1, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4This is lame, most of this can be done by enabling the google labs feature.
- someguy92, on 04/13/2009, -0/+4Gmail lets you use any standalone app via pop or imap
- YoctoYotta, on 04/14/2009, -0/+3Sad? I'd be quite pleased if showing my ***** was worth $25.
- Lemm, on 04/13/2009, -0/+31. Get a gmail account
2. forward yahoo mail to gmail
3. ???
4. profit! - unrealmp3, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2So if I install all the 22 extensions, I can unplug my PC from the power outlet and it will be self-sufficient?
- sexybobo, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2give you $5
- drex8, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I think "Better Gmail 2" extension by Gina Trappani of LifeHacker's is probably one of the best in that category.
- canchin, on 04/14/2009, -0/+2I suggest keeping your Yahoo account - and opening a Gmail account.
Then, use your Yahoo account for the nonsensical emails, subscriptions for things like websites - which will always result in an influx of spam - and as using for an email address for someone you don't know well enough to give them your main email address.
Also suggest that your Gmail address is not your name. Then, if you do get an email addressed as: Special offer for bobsyouruncle@g....., or Dear 90210@g...I've been looking for you - you'll know it needs to be deleted and not opened.
At least, that's what I use my Yahoo and Gmail accounts for - Yahoo for garbage and unimportant stuff, Gmail for more important stuff, and my private account through my ISP for the "real" stuff. - inactive, on 04/13/2009, -1/+3I actually just did the switch this last week. I've had my Yahoo email account pretty much since the beginning of Yahoo like 15 years ago.
1. Set up your Gmail account to bring your Yahoo mail over into Gmail. This is under the Accounts tab in Settings. You may want to choose NOT to "Label" it as your Yahoo email when it brings it in during this transition period. Labels are essentially Folders. I kinda think about it in terms of a combination of "Folders" and a filter. I set mine up to NOT leave a copy of message on the server, which deletes it from your Yahoo as you bring it into Gmail.
2. Start moving one folder at a time in Yahoo. Move the contents of a Yahoo folder to the Yahoo inbox. This will let Gmail pull it over. Once all the messages have been pulled from the Yahoo inbox (you can force Gmail to check the Yahoo mail, or you can just wait 20 seconds and it will start copying them) select All, Mark as Read (there's an option to get a "Mark as Read" button - in the labs part somewhere), then Move To label and create a new one that reflects your old Yahoo folder. What this will do is move the mail from your Gmail inbox into the "All Mail" folder, and put the tag on it so it's "in" that label you just created.
3. Repeat for all folders.
4. Turn labelling back on, so Gmail labels all your Yahoo mail as it pulls it in.
5. Tell all your friends, and update all your accounts! - this can happen over the next 2 or 3 years if you like. My mom figured out how to update her Yahoo address book without too many issues, so I'm sure you won't have many problems. Digg is being gay and won't let me change my registered email address, but their tech support pasted a response that they're working on it.
6. Brag how much better Gmail is because you can send someone a poop emoticon. - krc1, on 04/13/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure if "Smileys" and "Powerhouse" belong in the same article.
- bat-21, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I miss the Gmail Skins extensions. Their skins are easier on the eyes than most of Google's skins.
- rlbigfish, on 04/13/2009, -1/+2God, ***** you.
- NUMBER4940, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1It's already a powerhouse for me.
- drex8, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1That's why I buy my apples from Korean grocers. They usually have pretty decent prices.
- theaceoffire, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Apple - Over priced... that sounds pretty sweet actually.
- amroyce, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I generally use Thunderbird to read Gmails. However the G-space plugins cool. installed a couple of them already.
- ShoeString73, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1This add-on is for older versions of Firefox
- c010rb1indusa, on 04/13/2009, -3/+3I realize that, but I wouldn't use Firefox extensions in a standalone app, that was the whole point of my comment.
- inactive, on 04/13/2009, -3/+3Yes turns into Powerhouse BETA.
- cendana287, on 04/15/2009, -0/+0I usually utilise the POP3 of Gmail and use Mozilla Thunderbird. Have not had any big problems; except when there's a big attachment and the connection is super slow (using GPRS). Previously I had set it to delete messages from Gmail after downloading. But since there's so much space, I'm now using Archive.
- ray73864, on 04/14/2009, -0/+0Windows Live Skydrive gives you 25GB of free storage space.
- c010rb1indusa, on 04/13/2009, -8/+7Gmails great but I'll always use a standalone App for email. More responsive and doesn't "feel" like a web app.
- omgwtfbbq420, on 04/13/2009, -3/+2You mean opens your web browser up to more susceptible ways of hacking it.
- Smokeydabear, on 04/13/2009, -4/+2That's ***** pathetic. And I thought buying an invite on ebay for $25 was sad.
- aurorous, on 04/13/2009, -6/+3How can it be wildly popular? it's still in beta!
- jsilva86, on 04/13/2009, -5/+0Might I suggest Google Desktop? It has a great search feature which integrates with Outlook very nicely. It even searches your archived emails and previews them in your browser. Very nice indeed...
