http://gamefaqspc.wikispaces.com/Programs - JohnAdams999, on 11/12/2009, -1/+197A top 20 list with Adobe Reader in it?
- surasshu, on 11/12/2009, -20/+166GIMP is incredibly terrible. It seriously amazes me how bad it is. Almost anything is better. Try Paint.NET, for example.
- ricky125, on 11/12/2009, -6/+148What! Adobe Reader, and no RealPlayer Gold?
- emmanuelsotelo, on 11/12/2009, -1/+105Buried for Adobe Reader.
- ducttape36, on 11/12/2009, -1/+103seriously, they reccommend it over foxit? i stopped reading at that point.
- formfactor, on 11/12/2009, -1/+81Adobe Reader? Are you serious? Thank god for this article, now I know how to read PDFs.
- alexp2ad, on 11/12/2009, -1/+78Note: none of the free apps mentioned are in fact "essential" for your new Windows 7 PC.
- cor315, on 11/12/2009, -2/+49Microsoft Security Essentials. It's only uses 4mb of ram
- bencanfield, on 11/12/2009, -9/+55If you're in any sort of artistic major in college you'd be an idiot not to download Photoshop.
- thebreach, on 11/12/2009, -0/+38There is a common mistake there, sometimes people spell Foxit as Adobe
A few others I have come to love-
FIlezilla
xPlorer 2 (64bit Edition)
Foobar 2000
InfranView
Auto Hotkey - Greg2k, on 11/12/2009, -0/+37Also, Bonzi Buddy.
- KiSA, on 11/12/2009, -2/+37I guess FoxIt has an constantly increasing footprint?
I'll take minimal-and-slowly-creeping over way-too-big-in-the-first-place any day - CraigHwk, on 11/12/2009, -0/+33Someone's sarcasm detector is out of balance.
- getoffmybridge, on 11/12/2009, -1/+32Stay lost
- IHaveIssues, on 11/12/2009, -5/+34AVG used to be good but the latest one sucks like Norton. Better free option is Avira AntiVir.
- prettyawesome, on 11/12/2009, -1/+27It's an operating system, made by Microsoft.
Does that help? Less lost? - EvilJohn, on 11/12/2009, -0/+24Why do you need launch when you can press the windows key and start typing? Doesn't that do the same thing?
- cJw314, on 11/12/2009, -2/+26If you're in any sort of artistic major in college you'd get Photoshop at a severe discount.
- Cracken, on 11/12/2009, -1/+21@KiSA:
Yeah foxit has started bursting its promised waistline but it still loads gobs faster than adobe. - clippclop, on 11/12/2009, -10/+30Lets take everything we know that makes a good user interface, completely ignore it and add some paint features. Then we will make the worst ever implementation of layers known to man and try to convince people that we can compete with photoshop!
- gothsquirrel, on 11/12/2009, -1/+20+1 for TeamViewer
- bencanfield, on 11/12/2009, -0/+18Then you're obviously not a real art student -- you're supposed to be poor.
- FutureGuy, on 11/12/2009, -0/+18And for the ones who can get past "but its from MS" Microsoft Security Essentials is the best AV software and its free.
http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/09/firs ... - markgl, on 11/12/2009, -1/+197zip is the cats ass.
I like handbrake, but there isn't a preview for windows version to see if your encoding is going to look right. - PhillyMJS, on 11/12/2009, -12/+2721. Virtual Clonedrive http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html
Because Microsoft was too busy copying the look of OS X to copy the features it offers that have blindingly obvious utility-- like mounting an ISO instead of having to burn it to disc (ISO burning amazingly DID make it into Windows 7). - ziplizard, on 11/12/2009, -0/+15This list is better than techradar's.
- sputza, on 11/12/2009, -3/+17That's a pretty crap list.
- aegis17, on 11/12/2009, -5/+18-1 for K-Lite Codec Pack / XVid. Check out CCCP. Also, missing NoScript plugin for Firefox, Thunderbird, and Daemon Tools. The rest is okay, so +1 for that, bringing you to neutral.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/12/2009, -0/+13C'mon now. Let's not exaggerate by comparing any other software to RealPlayer. That's like comparing people to Hitler.
- jeremymccurdy, on 11/12/2009, -0/+13Been out for years and hasn't been updated in years.
- TheSabre, on 11/12/2009, -1/+14What? I just typed "Word" and Microsoft Office Word 2007 popped up. Windows 7 handles that just fine.
I also suspect that your first example may just be because the executable may be mpc.exe. I may be wrong there, but I can get similar results if I type "mmc" and Microsoft Management Console shows up because it is mmc.exe. - AgeofMastery, on 11/12/2009, -1/+14Good article, but I wish i had linked to the program's homepages instead of a download. Would have liked to have read a bit more about a couple of them without having to Google them.
- Swillys, on 11/12/2009, -1/+14I know! can't think of anything worse than installing bloody acrobat! They should add real player to the list! Perhaps AOL too, that's pretty handy!
- CraigHwk, on 11/12/2009, -1/+14VLC is still the best.
- sadatoni, on 11/12/2009, -3/+15AND... GIMP is insanely slow to start.
- Crosshare, on 11/12/2009, -1/+13YOU LEAVE KITTY ALONE!!!
- jezsik, on 11/12/2009, -1/+13Interface over functionality? No thanks.
- Gudeldar, on 11/12/2009, -0/+12SumatraPDF is the the best PDF reader out there IMO. Open source and very lightweight.
http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/ind ... - Drax0n, on 11/12/2009, -0/+11How could you make a list and not have VLC Media player on it? forget codecs forget klite pck just get VLC and VLC will play everything.
- FutureGuy, on 11/12/2009, -1/+11Win 7 is not a copy of OS X look and feel, and yes I am sure your read that article, I have too. Win 7 and OS X have two very different user experience.
- master69better, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10Why choose? Get both FF and Chrome. And Opera too. MPC and VLC. They're tiny and don't insult your startup (I'm looking at you, ituneshelper.exe).
Also Google "Acrobat Reader Lite" - I use it alongside Foxit, especially within the browser, although Foxit is the default reader for local PDFs. - xathish, on 11/12/2009, -2/+11Here are my alternatives and additions
Pdf Xchange - Better than foxit
Trillian Astro - Great feature list
Windows 7 Manager - All in one place
Microsoft Security Essentials - So far so good
Pspad - As good as Notepad++
FeedDemon - If you want an alternative for google reader - bencanfield, on 11/12/2009, -8/+17I thought OpenOffice.org would be a viable alternative for MSOffice but I was sorely mistaken. Have you ever tried making a presentation with OOo? It's guaranteed to look like *****. Just look at the thumb they use!
- LordSkywalker, on 11/12/2009, -1/+10Get many of these at once, with an auto-installer, at ninite.com
- FritoPendejo, on 11/12/2009, -0/+9The newest version of Foxit has non-removable ads. Goodbye!
- Arramol, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8@V1ncent - It's talking about memory footprint, not the size of the file itself.
- NJank, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8I guess ricky really did need a /s.
- dawnraid101, on 11/12/2009, -2/+10Cool Story Bro.
