- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -9/+130#3... instead of all that stuff... how about just holding down the Windows key and then press L
- stmiller, on 10/12/2007, -19/+105#21. You are running as administrator at all times.
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+57Don't you all realize no one gives a damn about your OS and why you think it's better?
Guess what? Each OS has it's own ups and downs.
OSX looks better, Windows can play games, Unix is open source.
OSX is expensive (you gotta get the computer with it), Windows is more vulnerable to viruses, and Unix doesn't have much developer support (drivers and the such).
So just STFU already, please. Use what you wanna use, but just because you use [insert OS here] doesn't mean your farts don't smell. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -9/+50Depends. My sister only uses her computer as a limited account, because I got sick of fixing her computer once a week (she's one of those people who clicks on everything). Yes, the main user is admin, but if you want to avoid that, you can set up an admin account and then use a limited account.
It can be done, despite what people like to claim. yeah, you can't do much when a limited user, but that's more or less the idea. I rarely have to get on my sister's computer as admin to do things for her. - marcusb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46AND when running limited, you can run specific programs at your choosing as administrator...
- borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+43"And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same."
It's in the article - ledmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Interesting, although their method for deleting files instantly is unnecessary, shift+delete will delete without sending to the bin.
- cbrian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+35Most people have better things to do then play with computers at a Build a Bear Workshop.
- nzgizmoguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24"That's it -- just double click on it and your computer will be locked. And if that's not easy enough, Windows key + L will do the same."
- blobzorz, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30Windows+L... One keystroke... win.
- xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4020 things the average person probably doesn't care to know about Windows XP.
- Tatusmi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21haha pwned.
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Nor Windows + R.
I use that more than anything. - hankyone, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Actually he is right
Keyword: Average user - BladeMelbourne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18That is not the Nile, it's denial.
Ben can't read. You can't spell. I can't give a crap :p - Tenlow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13And you can change the recycle bin settings too. In fact, 90% of those things have a much much easier GUI alternative to their examples. Most of which only take a few clicks.
But then again, the average XP blogger wouldnt know that. - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You can also do this with #1:
systeminfo | findstr /c:"System Up Time" > C:\uptime.txt
Instead of saving all of the output of systeminfo, you can save only the uptime. - HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@brendandonhue: I'm pretty sure anyone who has any clue what Linux is realizes that. Our point is that people who claim that as one of XP's weaknesses just don't know what they're doing.
- Electrox3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15#21 - At the store "Build a Bear Workshop" the computers there lock out every shortcut to keep you on their program, except "CTRL+ESC" which brings up the Start Menu.... for shame.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13most of these work on Vista, I just tried it...
- meekmassacre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yep.. He brings up Windows Key + L in #3
- purplegang, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Great Article.
My computing experience predates MS-DOS. I used to have to change jumpers on the motherboard and accessory cards to make changes in the operating system. Up until Windows XP, besides DOS, I used Windows 95, Windows 98 1 & 2, Windows NT, Windows 2000, disasters all. Oh and the biggest nightmare of them all, Windows Millennium, I used that too (The entire Windows Board of Directors should have been executed for that one).
Windows XP actually works pretty well compared to its predecessors. It still crashes daily ( I do video editing so its pretty intense) but all in all it works okay. I don't have to go into the Systems Properties anymore to make the computer work.
On one page the author of this article gives a couple use full shortcuts and instructions to speed up Windows-XP. If its on one page I'll read it; if its in a 15,000 page Multi-Volume Instruction guide I won't.
Oh by the way, The computers I ve owned and used include Sinclairs, Texas Instruments, Commodores, about 30 different PC's, and about 5 Macs. The claim that Macs are much more stable is a Myth. They crash just as often, the problems are just different. - PepeGSay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12why go throught the trouble? just hit Ctrl-Alt-Del then press enter, the machine is locked
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12REAL men don't need mice. I threw mine out long ago. Keyboard for life.
- blitzkun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Why? Just because it's not Web 2.0-ified? Simple is good.
- thefinger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9this might do it
In Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options. Under General, where it says "Click items as follows", put a dot next to "Single-click to open an item (point to select)", click Apply, then OK. - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Best practice: run as a limited user, and when you need admin rights you elevate the app or installer by right-click>"run as".
or run as admin all the time and when the system is up for a reinstall, reimage with acronis or ghost or use deepfreeze.
You can also create a simple auto-it exe that will do this automatically and obfuscate the code with a plugin. ive posted a guide on how to do that at neowin and msfn. - rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@engele
"The Apple bashing is nuts!"
No, not when the Apple fanboys started it in a Windows thread. If you go into an Adidas fanboy discussion and say that Nike is better, you should expect to get bashed. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13y not? I thought it wrapped things up very nicely. Many people don't know about it and it is the #1 tool against spyware, adware, and viruses
- barl0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6#2 : Hold shift key + Right-click, Select Delete
#4 : Start, Run, msconfig, Run, Select Startup Tab, and deselect the programs you don't want to run at boot-time without uninstalling them from the computer. Good for stuff the secretly gets installed on your parent's computer.
Good article! - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Windows+D is cool, I never knew that. I used to bind Win+M (minimize all - for pr0n and such) to my mouse, but it only worked for the primary monitor, Win+D works much better
- there, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6
A bit of repetition but might be useful in list form to someone.
Windows + R.............. Run dialog
Windows + E...............Windows explorer
Windows + D.............. Minimize/maximize desktop
Windows + L............... Lock desktop
Windows + F............... Find/Search box - Blitzenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Press the power button once. That way you don't even have to keep track of which OS you are using. ;)
- justnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6#2 is too convoluted. It's easier and probably safer to right click the recycle bin and select properties and check the box that says "Do not use recycle bin". There is also a check box as to wether or not you want a confirmation notice before deleting items. Nice and easy.
- strictnein, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What's with this clipmark site? That content was stolen (albeit admitedly) from http://www.metrocast.net/~dragontears/20things.html
- Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love your name. I hope you dugg this.
- kLacK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Actually, it looks quite nice on my CRT.
- pype, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9how about changing to have the shortcuts respond to a single click?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Ben, is that denile, or a joke?
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's actually possible to turn the "run as" situation on it's head. You can run your main account as an administrator and then run Internet Explorer as a limited user. It drastically cuts down on the amount of harm IE can do to your computer without impacting other areas.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i had to help make a program that did the same thing. I go to high school (and worked for my school over the summer) and when a student logs into the system for the first time every year (starting this year), they have to agree to a use permit. I helped make it so that they couldn't do ANYTHING unless they clicked "I agree." Some of it was easy, but some of it (like taking away the taskbar) kinda got messed up.... like when you try to bring the taskbar back...
- pidge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Digging because it is one of the few "things you may not know" that I really didn't know. Now, I don't know how useful this will be though.
- Goner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Windows Key + E = windows explorer.. I use that way more than any other win key combination..
- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4marking as inaccurate, because they were things I did not know, but once I finished reading the article, I checked the title again, and it still said "20 things the average person may not know". OK, just kidding.
- GabeUtsecks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6The only thing I learned that was that Windows key + D minimizes or restores all windows. But I am not the average user.
Notes:
-On number 2, he didn't mention that you can just select an item and press shift + delete to delete it permanently.
- He forgot about a few nice keyboard shortcuts (windows + e to bring up windows explorer, alt+tab to cycle through open applications, et cetera), function keys (F2 to rename a file, F5 to refresh a page, et cetera), and the super-important (but unknown to average users) shift-click and control-click. Oh well. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"AND when running limited, you can run specific programs at your choosing as administrator..."
however, you can't run everything, like the control panel. also, certain applications need admin privileges, because some lame programmers still store application data in the program files folder instead of in the documents and settings folder, like they should, because they still think every dumb windows user runs as admin, as they SHOULDN'T with all the malware out there!
it's not like the way os x will ask you who you want to runas if you click on something that needs admin privileges. although, it will be that way when vista is released. vista handles user accounts ∞ times better than xp.
dioscaido said it best. i don't know why he got dugg down. he's right. although, i guess that's just digg. they don't know, or don't want to know, or know and still don't want to know the truth. the latter is my favorite river in africa! :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Right-click heaven is the #1 reason Windows won.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4thats why people who dont care how their computers work like Macs so much.
- barl0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Windows Key + E more than anything. Nice shortcut, actually.
- Galaeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After reading 2 and 3 I gave up. Why go through so much trouble setting something up when it's already done for you?
2.) Shift + delete = deletes with skipping the recycle bin
3.) Windows Key + L = locking the workstation -
