- MagicBobert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38This article should be titled "15 Things You Already Knew About XP and That Cool Setup Music!"
- picktwo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37If you try the commands while listening to the intro music it's better
- Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44
There is nothing interesting about this article what so ever.
Open "ODBC Administrator" dialog by typing obcdad32 somewhere?
That's hardly a secret and you can get to it from the control panel, Just like half this stuff.
All you've done is browsed your C:Windows directory and doubled clicked on all the exe's.
Now you think thats a good article? pfff.
Phill - EricDraven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+37I just still don't understand why when you want to stop Windows, you press Start.
- calorifer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33this reminds me of my favorite windows game back in the days of win95
uuuu, what does this icon do... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Wow, I knew about mplayer2, but not mplay32. Weird. How many different mediaplayers does xp have?
- BillDoE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29@EricDraven
For the same reason they make you hit OK for errors. This program is shutting down, OK ? - Takteek, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31213 actually. Some are disguised as other things though. Did you think that dumb start button was JUST to bring up a menu?!
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23They even list Character Map as a hidden goodie. That's funny.

Actually, when the Mac didn't have a hard drive, but only a single floppy drive, when you ejected a disk, the disk's icon remained mounted but grayed out, so that you could insert another disk and drag files from one disk to the other to copy them. The computer then read the files, ejected the disk and prompted you to insert the original disk in order to write the files. To get rid of the icon, you threw it to the trash. If you threw the icon to the trash without ejecting the disk first, the computer ejected it automatically and removed the icon. (There was also the command "Put Away" which did the same thing.) Dragging disks to the trash to eject/unmount them became second nature to Mac users, so Apple kept it even when it changed the "Eject" command to work like the old "Put Away" one. Anyway, there was always an Eject or Put Away command on the Finder's menus, so dragging disks to the trash was only a shortcut for experienced users. Nowadays, the shortcut remains, but when you grab a volume icon, the trash can turns to an eject symbol. - dAbReAkA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14they just wanna make sure that the EU wont remove all of their media players :D
- gr8one, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I can't believe they missed the "secure mode" feature of windows. Just hold down F9 while booting and Windows XP will boot into Secure mode where it shuts off the computer for you before you login.
- trylleklovn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"uuuu, what does this icon do..."
Thats how i learned .. everything.. You can imaging the look of my face when I had just deleted every .dll on my win 3.11 installation, after I had read that they were of no use ... - Bigbro69, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Dugg for "16 Windows XP commands you MAY never have heard of"
- iamexcite, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17To be fair, until recently on a Mac you ejected a CD by dragging it into the trash can. I'm really not aware of any OS (shell/window manager if you want to get technical) that doesn't have its share of minor inconsistencies.
- Mandeep, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20the only one that's actually worth a damn on there is the intro music which is really awesome.
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10There'd need to be at least 100 goodies for 99% to exist. Well that's unless you can access 15 and 21/25ths of the goodies from the start menu or control panel.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10incredibly lame.
99% of that stuff is reachable from either the start menu or the control panel.
more like "16 hidden windows XP Goodies - if you're a ***** moron" - venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Slow news day?
- chaosmachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7winchat.. there's one i didn't know about. i guess it's kind of a "net send" gui..
- hmemcpy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Here's another:
Start -> Turn off Computer (or just press Alt+F4 for the shutdown dialog) -> hold Alt+Ctrl+Shift -> press "Cancel" - unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7lol i replaced some of my sys32 dlls with 'newer versions' that were on another computer on the network. lol that was a learning experience.
- CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7And if you're really lazy, just Windows Key + R will bring up the run dialog. Also, Windows Key + E brings up windows explorer. Windows Key + L is for fast user switching. Windows Key + D hides all applications (or brings them back) - a bit like Expose on the Mac, but slower and uglier ;)
- Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You chose a suitable name for yourself atleast.
- Qliphah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yea the chats the only think I didn't know about... funny thing is its even on Windows 2000 (I just tested it on 2k) kind of clunky but it works. Small warning tho, it shows typing in real time so whoever your talking to will see how bad of a typist you are.
- piratebill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5windows L will also lock your computer if user switching is disabled
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The single thing I've loved about XP installs was the intro music. Digg for finally finding it! Never knew about the voices towards the end.
- Luuvitonen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6And he missed msconfig which is by far more useful than those listed.
- nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Who would think that the only new thing I'd learn here is from a comment 1/2 way down the page...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5they forgot the single most useful hidden app ->"control userpasswords2"
- Tredici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Your first mistake was believing you are important enough to be remembered.
- betona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Bummer. I was hoping to find a cool tool I wasn't aware of.
- GrendelT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, digg just for the music. I've always enjoyed that little track.
- unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well if they stay gone just ctrl+alt+del then on window go File->New Task (Run)-> and type "Explorer" and hit enter and that will bring em back.
- cjcj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How about eudcedit (XP only) - Private Character editor. you can create your own font!
(start/run: eudcedit)
or goto start/run: type cmd: and try "fsutil" (manage volume dirty bit, what the heck is that)
lots more here: http://www.networkclue.com/os/Windows/commands/
it even mentions Digg as a contributor.
cj - TheBigJ149, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Where the ***** did my task bar and icons go!?!? lol
- quanganhdo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The same as killing explorer.exe using Task Manager, I guess
- DavX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Incorrect MikeOSX - you hold the windows flag key while pressing R/E/D/M, let go of both at once. You will not see the start menu.
- marksy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what about that clock video thats been in the Windows folder since 95... thats, um, a goodie
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, but when you drag a CD, the trashcan magically changes from a trashcan into an eject icon. It's not very intuitive, but they do change the icon showing that it's getting ejected, which eliminates the inconsistency, even if it's illogical. There is also an eject button on your keyboard, and you can rightclick/ctrl-click on the icon and eject it from the menu also.
- MusicalGenius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone know where all the Vista extras are...
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3These aren't goodies... all geeks know about these..
- ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@quanganhdo
kiling it and closing it safely are two diffrent things... closing it that way allows explorer.exe to save its settings in the registry, killing it doesn't. - Daveoh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No way! I don't believe I've missed out on Driver Verifier Manager before, or checking my System Monitor to see how much this stuff sucks. If only I wanted to start using old software, stuff no-one will ever use, and check what I have in the clipboard instead of pressing CTRL+V.
Also title.wma just turned into my favourite song, screw your-favourite-band-name-here - 1ivewire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow sysedit, that brings me back a few years. It's worth having in XP just for the old system font.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder why it was included.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn I am geek I knew most of them...maybe thats why I am more interested in Ubuntu now, it's completely new for me (or was about a couple years ago).
Digg - hansdg1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lots of people still drag the CD to the trash to eject it...
- knuckleskin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You'll also find most of those Start > Run commands work without the .exe extension
I find getting to notepad or charmap, or regedit really easy using the winkey+r then getting a partial match, rather than having to leave my keyboard find my mouse. Looks much cooler too. -
