- svivian, on 09/13/2008, -6/+78Opera's best feature IMO is the "fast back", where the previous page loads INSTANTLY from memory. No other browser comes close to this. And while Opera does render pages faster than other browsers, it's true speed comes from features like this.
Widgets are useless - they're just apps running outside the browser and have no interaction with web pages. Speed Dial is kinda limited too - someone made a FF extension within a week with more functionality. Bittorrent is slow as well and lacks key features like file priorities (including a "don't download" option) and per-torrent speeds. - inactive, on 09/13/2008, -26/+97Opera allows you to display selected images :P Firefox doesnt :(
Opera is a light browser :) Firefox Isnt :(
But i still use both :P
Nevertheless , FF is the best gotta admit that. - NathanCH, on 09/14/2008, -3/+73Someone write an article of 10 reasons why you should use what ever browser you bloody well feel like using.
- therippa, on 09/14/2008, -42/+97Sorry, but I can't browse without AdBlock
- Spuy767, on 09/13/2008, -6/+60Opera is best with standards comliant code, if you stray outside of the standards, it can be iffy on opera, Digg's JS code is a prime example, but if you write your code perfectly according to standards, it will run perfectly on opera.
- PueSi, on 09/14/2008, -10/+62It's incredible how little attention Opera gets, the only reason why somebody would want to use FF over Opera it's the extensions.
- drex8, on 09/13/2008, -4/+56"Nevertheless , FF is the best gotta admit that."
The reason being, Firefox became a wildly popular browser in a relatively short time, despite its earlier issues about memory hogging and all. Thousands of developers developed really good and innovative extensions and add-ons for it, making Firefox an extremely feature rich browser.
Firefox become the browser of choice of the rebels. It became the browser of choice of people, who hated the IE with a passion..not only for its multitude of defects, drive by spyware and trojan installations, not adhering to standards, and numerous other problems...but also, because a lot of people simply hated Microsoft, and wanted nothing to do with their product(s), unless absolutely required to do so.
For a long time, Opera was a shareware browser. And only in the last couple of years, it has become really free. And so, though in some aspects, Opera is sometimes superior to Firefox, and totally triumps over IE in many, many fronts..people who earlier made the jump to a different browser (mostly to Firefox) other than built in IE, .stuck with it ..i.e. they stuck with Firefox. So Opera kind of missed the boat. If Opera were truly a free, innovative browser from the beginning, with active interaction of the developer community, the numbers might have been quite different. We will never know. - InYoLeftI, on 09/14/2008, -11/+53Mouse gestures should be #1 imo
- Tocc, on 09/14/2008, -6/+43http://my.opera.com/Tamil/blog/ad-block
- fuelcarddotorg, on 09/14/2008, -8/+36I really dont understand why people don't give opera a chance. ive been using it since v6 and still absolutely love it. Yes firefox has a ton of great add ons, but as a browser it simply doesnt work as well as opera.
- LumpOfCole, on 09/13/2008, -12/+39Once you go Mouse Gestures, you can't go back.
- RMoore08, on 09/14/2008, -8/+32Go to bed.
- deadbaby, on 09/14/2008, -23/+46#1: Speed: I don't find any of the major modern browsers to slow. Especially WebKit based ones.
#2: Speed Dial: Or you could just click on the bookmark for the site or open a group of tabs to serve the same purpose.
#3: Widgets: My OS has widget support so I'm not sure why I'd want another layer of them in my browser.
#4: Wand: I'm pretty sure every other major browser saves username/passwords these days.
.
#5: Notes: "Have you ever been browsing and wanted to take notes on a page or site (or about something totally unrelated to your Web browsing)"
No, actually I haven't.
#6: BitTorrent: Already have a BT client. Thanks but no thanks.
#7: Display modes "Another unique-to-Opera feature"
Not really that unique since most other browsers have a full-screen & zoom feature.
#8: Quick Preferences
about:config
#9: Mouse Gestures: Already got an extension for it. I can see some benefit of having it built in and not needing to go find an extension for it but it's something you do once and forget about it. I don't think it would really be wise to go download Opera just to get the same functionality I already have.
#10: Session saving: Again, the other browsers also do this.
I have no problem with Opera but I loathe these stupid "10 reasons to ________" non-sense -- especially when they're not even accurate. - svivian, on 09/13/2008, -9/+31"not fully open source"
Haha, I bet you've never even looked at Firefox's source code.
And what do you mean by "not always free to use"? Opera is free, end of story. - mrno, on 09/14/2008, -7/+29Opera is a lot faster than IE and Firefox. There have been various unbias tests between browsers and Opera always win in the speed. However, most people can't live without noscript and adblock plus. Opera's adblocking software is very poor.
- fjsferreira, on 09/13/2008, -8/+29Opera > Firefox - Startup time, responsiveness, out of the box features, smaller download, skins and overall customization (like custom buttons), memory consumption, etc etc
- xptweakerntn, on 09/14/2008, -37/+57Or lets take a look at reasons you shouldn't use the Opera browser:
1)No extensions. Sorry, but widgets just aren't the same.
2)No adblock, its "content blocker" doesn't suffice.
3)No Scribefire (sorry, this one is just for bloggers)
4)Seemingly enough (really under #1), I can't integrate delicious bookmarks into it, and stumbleupon is the same story as the rest. - OpCzar, on 09/13/2008, -1/+20"When was the last time I wanted to break my webpage to make it Fit to Width - FAIL"
I love that feature when reading from the couch - I zoom in and turn on Fit to Width so I don't need to scroll sideways. - inactive, on 09/14/2008, -6/+25But I only want one.
- kenplaysviola, on 09/14/2008, -3/+21It's a pain in the ass to block one ad content at a time. Adblock Plus has the ability to subscribe to their list which automatically updates and blocks all those ads.
Someone posted a link about Adblock in Opera, but it has a method where you need to manually create an urlfilter.ini file and manually copy a list of domain names into it. Too much work. - inactive, on 09/14/2008, -1/+18Needs more smileys.
- jewishmafio, on 09/14/2008, -0/+16Its useful for porn?
- Morghin, on 09/14/2008, -5/+20I know, but strange as it may sound, Opera is a more smooth surfing experience.
- NotACYBORG, on 09/14/2008, -5/+20Yea, I love how Digg users think open source = better. That's not always the case. 90% of the users have no idea how to read the source code to begin with.
And it's entirely free, dunno where he's coming from. - elfprince13, on 09/14/2008, -1/+16facebook and gmail can be iffy at times too :( but that needs to be taken up with those 2 companies, its not an issue with Opera.
- TheRedDarren, on 09/14/2008, -6/+21AdBlock is my homie.
- NotACYBORG, on 09/14/2008, -6/+21You must not have ever really used Opera. One of your problems is you are having difficulty coming to grips with the fact Firefox has stolen most of its great features from Opera to begin with.
As for speed, this is one of those things that changes all the time. Honestly it all seems to be the same anymore. Mouse gestures, obviously you have no clue what you are talking about. They are great if you take the time to figure them out. Opera saves your sessions and it even has a trash bin to restore tabs you have closed (complete with restoring the history of that tab as well).
Also, fit to width and the zoom modes are great. It demonstrates the power of the Opera renderer. - ZeMoose, on 09/14/2008, -15/+28Many of those features are present in Firefox or exist as Firefox extensions. :P
- ry4nsm1th, on 09/14/2008, -1/+14I never said it was Opera's fault.
- fuelcarddotorg, on 09/14/2008, -4/+16I dont think it's that poor, it's just not automatic. Plus some people like to reward the publishers of sites that we visit.
- Jennica, on 09/14/2008, -0/+12I like "Paste and go"
- NotACYBORG, on 09/14/2008, -1/+12Really?
Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network (Mac: Opera > Preferences > Advanced > Network)
Proxy feature is right there. - drex8, on 09/13/2008, -2/+13Yes it is, except it's a non-smiling, but laughable one.
Like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xLRQohZtuo - feliks2, on 09/14/2008, -1/+12Right click > Edit Site Preference s
In the network tab select Mask as IE (not identify as IE)
Play around with the options in the other Site Preferences tabs
I got my Universitiy's website to work, bank website, Comcast's TV Planner thing, and some other sights to work doing this. - nmanguy, on 09/14/2008, -12/+22The only reason I could see myself using a non-Firefox browser is if Firefox changes its name
- mickhead, on 09/14/2008, -0/+10Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Proxy Servers ?
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -5/+15It's my browser of choice
- Morghin, on 09/14/2008, -2/+12Can't blame them for wanting to make some money for all their hard work. They didn't have google to pay them for integrated search in the olden days, remember?
- Morghin, on 09/14/2008, -5/+14Isn't that the bank's fault rather than Opera's fault? I mean, if you make a turd square and try to fit it in a circle it won't fit, right? With the bank's page being square of course, in case someone dense read this. The bank knows it should make the thing into a circle, but it still chooses a square *shrugs*
- RyomaNagare, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9I'm a huge opera fan, I mean if I could, I've had dugg this story for every year I've used opera,
still the list doesn't come close to the top reasons opera is a superior browser.
number one: customization, You can make opera look and behave however you like, no other browser features such an easy and powerful interface.
Its mail client is really powerful, if more people got used to it, we've had much less drone machines sending spam.
Web-Panels, An awesome application that lets you manage your notes, mails, favorites, etc, but also allows for an incredible way to display web-apps of different kinds
Fit to Width + True Zoom, amazing combination that allows you to zoom into a webpage without having to scroll horizontally.
hot-click menu, just double click any word or sentence in any page, and you have a contextual menu, with appropriate actions, like "go to web address", send email? translate, "wikipedia it"
finally custom search engines, nothing beats its ability to create new search engines, and use them directly from the address bar.
those are just a few of the features i can't leave without. - Tocc, on 09/14/2008, -0/+9Tools -> Preferences -> General -> Startup -> start with blank page
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -2/+11Actually, Webkit is.
- Tocc, on 09/14/2008, -1/+10Tools -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Network -> Proxy Servers
- Spuy767, on 09/14/2008, -2/+11I wasn't saying that opera was the best browser for standards compliant code, I was saying that opera works best when it's given good code.
- Discobiscuits, on 09/14/2008, -2/+10Which is why it's now free...
- MrWally, on 09/14/2008, -0/+8Well, you can have unlimited number of tabs open at once without having to scroll through them as in firefox, meaning if you have to open a ***** of webpages (or pictures) its easier to quickly navigate between them all. . . .
- inactive, on 09/14/2008, -1/+9But then what would fanboys fap/fight over?
- AmazingAndrex, on 09/14/2008, -1/+9It was free, too bad you missed out. :(
- theexitwound, on 09/14/2008, -1/+9I've been using Opera since v4 and it's always been my browser of choice for the following reasons:
-Customization. From theming and skinning to moving the buttons around, downloading new buttons, panels, whatever you need.
-Keyboard Shortcuts are second to none. this is a huge bonus for me.
-Mouse gestures are simply unrivaled.
-Built in ad blocker if you're not interested.
-Built in torrent support.
-Opera Link is fantastic.
-The speed is second to only Chrome in my history.
-Used M2, their mail client for years before I started to fade from email use.
-Quick security and bug fixing.
There are dozens of other reasons I've been an Opera user. Extensions are yet another reason why I use Opera. It's all included in the out-of-the-box experience. It's a shame they have such a small user base in the desktop market. - Morghin, on 09/14/2008, -6/+14True, all too true, and there's not a damned extension I need.
Except Firebug. Firebug is awesome.
With that being the exception I can use Opera for everything else.
And no, I don't add useless little ***** gimmicks like "easier bookmarking" or "gimmicky bookmarking" or "enhanced facebook" and "coloured feces/something" or whatever. While Firefox does have some useful and gimmicky addons I rarely use them. As for ads and stuff I barely notice them anymore. Mental block. Should I ever need one there is a script for that mentioned by someone else here. -
