- websyndicate, on 09/11/2008, -2/+24This could really make me want to get the Android. I just dont like t-mobiles network. The apps are really great.
- barnett25, on 09/12/2008, -0/+21Yeah, it's almost like we are on a website that caters to people interested in technology...
- stealth658, on 09/12/2008, -0/+19While wearing Nike sneakers, I fell once. I wear Pumas now, needless to say.
- reuscel, on 09/12/2008, -0/+12This phone is the only reason I haven't left T-Mobile. I live in a city, so their network works just fine for my purposes.
- cotaskmemalloc, on 09/12/2008, -0/+10Stop spamming your stupid forum everywhere.
- cotaskmemalloc, on 09/12/2008, -1/+10The cab4me app is pretty cool.
- PecanHead, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7Dugg for your completely disproportionate level of rage.
- chrispix, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7Long story, but I tried doing the startup software thing when I was in college over 10 years ago, never had the tenacity to finish the project. But about 6 years ago, I was reading the online newspaper and saw a story about a guy who was building a website to trade textbooks online. Unfortunately it was only available on campus. I offered to host him pro-bono as that is something I would have loved to have had while in college. He accepted and ran his site for about 4 years.
Fast forward to today. He was one of the top 10 finalists : he wrote GoCart. A very cool idea, I like that google is reaching out to developers to create some truly unique apps. congratulations on the top 10!! - WomensUnderwear, on 09/12/2008, -5/+12ONE PAGE YOU *****!
- Ellipsys, on 09/12/2008, -0/+7All that is nice, but I'm interested in if the "core" applications - address book, media player, web browser etc... are going to be on the same level as the iPhone 3G. I have an iPhone, and have grown sick of the limitations and restrictions of the software, but the core operation is very good. If Android (and Android-based phones) are going to make a dent in the market, they're going to have to equal or be proven superior to the basic applications of the iPhone.
- n1cza, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6No mention of Enkin?
- rowjimmy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+6google didn't develop any of those apps.
- brianter, on 09/12/2008, -1/+7Awesome list! Great work, I can't wait to get an Android phone!
- krische, on 09/12/2008, -0/+5Am I correct in saying that Sprint and T-Mobile are the only providers that are going to be getting android phones?
- MitchCumstein, on 09/12/2008, -0/+4Won't happen. Locale works by changing your phone's settings automatically. The iPhone's settings are off limits to 3rd party applications.
- echotech, on 09/11/2008, -2/+6Not a huge fan of T-Mobile either. If only there were some more GSM providers.
- sbaysem, on 09/11/2008, -4/+8if and when Android would become stable and secure across networks perhaps, I might get me one. But for now, I'll stay as an spectator.
- iet2004, on 09/12/2008, -2/+6Locale = amazing! I would use this! hope someting like this makes its way into the itunes app store. i would even use it at the locale movie theatre.
- juliohm, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Dugg for diggin that
- juliohm, on 09/13/2008, -0/+3Sure! Just like we all did for the iPhone.
- hackysackmaster, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4All of them actually sound pretty good, looks like google is really taking the time to develop high quality apps. Then again most of these could be done on an iphone.
- MCMLXXXII, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3The main thing is, Android is open source so development of creative apps will take place at a much larger scale than development on propriety platforms.
- orion9, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4Those all sound great..but really have to test them out to see functionality..also there is nothing there that can't be already done on the iphone..and what about the screen display? the icons?
And the iphone is moving towards more and more games..what about android gaming capabilities? - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 09/12/2008, -1/+4you people have no sense of humor. tsk.
- Aerandir, on 09/12/2008, -0/+3If you live in NY. If you live in California, it's useless.
- r3vmixman, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Its coming to tmobile first.
- trigatch4, on 09/12/2008, -4/+6What good are 3G capabilities when you can never connect to the 3G network?
- flipao, on 09/12/2008, -0/+2Dig this down all you want, it shows you have no idea of where applications are headed to, the browser *is* the platform of the future, and Chrome has been built specifically to handle complex web applications efficiently. That is one of the main reasons only 1 tab will crash as opposed to the whole browser and why it has such a fast Javascript VM.
Want more?, the browser takes almost the entire screen, when you maximize the window the title bar becomes invisible, you can create direct shortcuts to online applications such as Google Mail, Google Spreadsheets, etc...
Chrome is the first step by Google on swaying people away from the desktop paradigm, but hey, if you don't understand this dig it down, we can't expect the Digg crowd to have the expertise of the Slashdow crowd can we. - krische, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I just assumed Sprint was getting some phones eventually since they are an OHA partner and all.
- rowjimmy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1wow, unless you edited your post, i think this reply went in the wrong place. whoops.
- rowjimmy, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1wow, are people sensitive that i (and a lot of the open-source community) am pissed at google for not really making this platform open-source, though they continue to advertise it as so? i know, there should be smaller-scale testing before letting the world at the code base, etc - but rather than keeping the general public apprised of the api, they made that secret only for top developers, thus cementing relationships and stopping small-scale developers from having an equal competitive edge. doesn't sound very open source to me...
or, maybe people don't like it that i (and a lot of open source developers) absolutely hate java, and really hate the fact that google has - at least until they release the source so people can fix this - locked development into java? - flipao, on 09/12/2008, -2/+3Chrome *is* Google OS.
- RaulMuadDib, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Microsoft will be late to the party again.
- Chronictrees, on 09/12/2008, -1/+2It has the word google in it, the sheep will bah.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 09/13/2008, -0/+112 hours later and im buried. really? i thought you guys would be a bit better spirited than that.
when did digg stop being about news and start being about whose platform is better? when did it become more important to be right than to be intelligent? i mean, i'm an iphone and mac fan, and while i disagree with windows fanboys, etc., i'm not above laughing at a joke, even when i disagree with the premise.
i guess at some point you have to stop and ask yourself: is it really worth all the bickering? is it so important to be right? i think this community as a whole, both sides, could stand a little lightening up. after all, this space should be about discourse, not prostheletizing. it should be about learning, not approaching everything we dislike/disagree with with a "burn the heathen to the ground" attitude. - GawtMilk, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1A black guy got into the elevator with me in New York City. I preemptively called 911. They dropped my call, probably because I was in the elevator. I am with United Telegraph now, needless to say.
- MrViklund, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1The phone isn't even out yet???
Guess the PR people are working up the press before the launch. - skyshock1, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Or pretty much any other city where cab service is uncommon.
- skyshock1, on 09/12/2008, -0/+1Sprint isn't in the works. According to Google's press releases it'll be available on T-mobile near the end of the year (even though Sprint is an OHA partner). Verizon is pretty much not even in the picture.
- inactive, on 09/23/2008, -0/+1Majority of the 'amazing' apps I've seen for the Android system seem a lot more like fairly lame extensions for google maps rather than anything that give a mobile phone any substantial usability or any sort of revolutionary advancements in mobile technology.
- Electricpigdigg, on 09/15/2008, -0/+1Cabs4me is a pretty neat idea!
- skyshock1, on 09/13/2008, -0/+1Sprint doesn't use a GSM network, which is what Android is going to be using. Since AT&T sucks in the USA, pretty much the only other GSM provider is T-mo.
- anshuman, on 09/12/2008, -1/+1Android phone , WANT FAST :)
