- Subcrtical, on 10/13/2009, -5/+61Gimp's ONLY advantage over Photoshop is that it's free, period.
As a free app, it's fantastic.
As a photo editing app, it's good.
As a Photoshop competitor, it's not even close. - Bukowsky, on 10/13/2009, -3/+19Exactly.
I've used both programs, and I like GIMP, but Photoshop is still the best out of the two. Hands down. - digitalpencil, on 10/13/2009, -3/+14i just find it amusing that people are under the impression that it's just a matter of 'weaning' people off photoshop..
gimp's fine but it's in a completely different league.. moreover, thepiratebay.
tbh, cost is a prohibitive issue when it comes to creative software but no-one (inc. Adobe) honestly expects you to pay for single-user licenses when you're just ***** about with it. if you're working freelance and making decent scratch, buy the titles you use as your investing back into your own industry. otherwise, the media-house you're working for will deal with the site-licenses etc. i wouldn't feel bad about having a pirate copy at home for personal use.
i wouldn't bother with GIMP for that explicit reason, if you're actually making money, you're using Creative Suite. if you're not making money and just ***** about, editing your holiday snaps, i wouldn't worry so much about using a cracked ver of pshop to the extent that you bother with GIMP.
all that said, use whatever you like but if you are hoping to get into the industry, don't use GIMP, it's a waste of time and no-one uses it.. - cx0der, on 10/13/2009, -0/+11All in one page
http://www.maximumpc.com/print/8359 - badqat, on 10/13/2009, -3/+12Agree wholeheartedly. Nothing comes close to offering the functionality of Photoshop.
- georgetds, on 10/14/2009, -0/+6When was the last time someone asked for a facial tissue or used a hook and eye faster system?
- CanadaMan87, on 10/14/2009, -3/+8GIMP may be the best FREE choice for image editing software, but nobody is getting 'weaned' off Photoshop any time soon.
- plonk420, on 10/14/2009, -2/+7gawd, GIMP is sooooooooo horrid. it's TRYING to be photoshop, but the UI is just one horrendous mess (while also trying to not copy its UI (or at least PS's well known shortcut keys)). for a free editor short of photoshop, Paint.NET seems to do what i want (and i can ACTUALLY figure out what i want to do within seconds), but if i want TRUE photoediting, can't beat PS. i'll even take 5.5 or 6.01 over the aforementioned apps.
GIMP needs a usability group or dictator to take over and build up/down from there. there have been 2 (or more?) UI "improvements", supposedly, but it's the same annoying, frustrating interface, AFAICT. also, it should decide if it wants to clone photoshop, or create its own flow or setup. - savingaurora, on 10/14/2009, -2/+7its just so cheesy and cheap . I know its strength lies in the operators hands but its almost along the lines that the default brushes is so "Clip Art" in a way.
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4It's absurd how people bitch about the cost of photoshop considering if you work in the design or photography field as a freelancer you can write it off on your taxes anyway.
- sykotik, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4I think that there could be any number of reasons beyond the one you imply. Photoshop has been around longer, and it has the financial backing for aggressive marketing. Gimp is free. Also, "shop," or "shopped," has entered the popular lexicon, and is used because not many people might know or use Gimp (yes, I see the the "there's a reason why" comment a mile away). I'm not saying one or the other is better, I'm just trying to point out different reasons why what you implied is a bit short-sighted. It's possible you've seen "shops" that were, in fact, "gimps."
- denimhead, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4you don't know ***** about picture editing
- milkmage, on 10/14/2009, -0/+4yeah, and how exactly do you know an edited image WASN'T done in GIMP?
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -2/+5i23photography, if you are a professional photographer and run a business, if you can afford a 4k camera and the 800 dollar monthly lease for your shop, you can afford a copy of photoshop, if not you need to re-examine your business model, especially considering you can write it off on your taxes.
- explodingzebras, on 10/14/2009, -0/+3I used the 'print to file' on Ubuntu but you could use print to pdf on other OS's :)
- inactive, on 10/14/2009, -5/+8LOL........gimp isn't bad, but, it's NO photoshop. It has a LONG way to go, if it wants to compete with photoshop. I tried it a while back. For a novice, it isn't bad, but for someone who really uses photoshop for something other than resizing photos, or taking a blemish off of a photo, photoshop can't be beat.
- duckferret, on 10/14/2009, -2/+5I tried both Gimp and taking a nap on a red ant colony, and I found the ants to be more user-friendly.
- Techrocket9, on 10/14/2009, -1/+4I prefer GIMP because I can use it without formal training, while I can't make heads or tails of Photoshop. It's a personal preference, not a legal claim.
- krisrm, on 10/14/2009, -0/+2Hey guys, listen, I pirate software, and I'm going to tell the whole internet about it because it makes me feel better about myself, and I just really need some external validation to boost my dwindling self-esteem. *tear*
Seriously, though, just shut up. We don't care if you paid for your software or not, you're not gaining "internet points" by talking down on "those losers" who pay for software. - i23Photography, on 10/14/2009, -0/+2Do I look like I have a business?
- fxu1989, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3You can do all of that in photoshop.
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/14/2009, -0/+2Paint.NET is a much better replacement in my opinion. It's almost completely replaced Photoshop for me.
- inactive, on 10/13/2009, -1/+3Only in price, it is.
- Techrocket9, on 10/13/2009, -7/+9No
Linux>Windows>Mac when Linux and Windows and Mac are all PCs - antdude, on 10/13/2009, -0/+2But will prompt to print. :P
- shinkou, on 10/14/2009, -2/+4The odds are if you are a professional, you'll be paid for a legitimate copy of Photoshop. However, for all the rest of us who don't have the spare money to invest, free (or cheaper) alternatives is usually the way to go. That said, the GIMP does not mean to be a Photoshop clone, so comparing them feature-by-feature is just plain nonsense. You don't compare a Civic with a Ferrari, do you?
- grahamonrye, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3or you can do what everyone else does and just download photoshop.
- macslut, on 10/14/2009, -1/+3This is sooo true. I learned Photoshop because I pirated it. I had a job, and they bought a copy for me. I was laid off and pirated a copy. I went to work somewhere else, and they bought me a copy...etc...
I've probably had a dozen or so copies of Photoshop purchased for me, so I really don't feel so bad pirating a copy for personal use so that I can keep up with it.
The same goes for MS Office and FinalCut. - ricorurik, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1Sorry, neither Photoshop nor Gimp come with talent and biz savvy.
- inactive, on 10/13/2009, -2/+3Photographers and artists and graphic designers. Anyone who makes their living editing photos. The rest should use GIMP.
- kaosethema, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1yes, thank you, i need this.
i get lazy and just fall back into photoshop. - CanadaMan87, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1I second that.
- i23Photography, on 10/14/2009, -2/+3Do I look like a rich man to you?
- dialector, on 10/15/2009, -0/+1Enough with pretending that GIMP compares to Photoshop. Nothing will *ween* me off Photoshop because Photoshop is not my mama's tit. Photoshop is the state of the art that blows GIMP out of the water. If you cannot afford Photoshop, by all means use GIMP. It is a great FREE program, but it is nothing compared to Photoshop.
- pbgswd, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2Photoshop is a good app, but I will shoot the next person who things its an acceptable tool for web page design & html export. It is also not the only tool for manipulating graphics. Sadly, like MS Word, people dont normally use 80% of the software features. I would like to see more software knowledge among graphic designers, because other apps also have their strengths.
- mmmiiikkkeee, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1I am big on FLOSS, but please give some reasons for you claim. And while your at it, what do you think of Krita? I hear it is gaining a lot of features lately. A statement without justification is pretty lame to me though(but it seems digg is full people like that)
- jpdbaugh, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1no one knows what you look like.
- fxu1989, on 10/14/2009, -0/+1Buy it with a student discount.
$200 on the apple site - fxu1989, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2I agree with the first part of your post. I disagree with the second.
- zbeast, on 10/14/2009, -1/+2As long as I can find a way to crack photoshop I'll keep using photoshop.
- masterstghm, on 10/14/2009, -3/+4Why do I need to be "weaned" off of Photoshop in the first place?
- jonomir, on 10/14/2009, -3/+3I used GIMP back in middle school. It was great then.
- noumuon, on 10/15/2009, -1/+1yea and they're all owned by adobe and packaged into the cs4 collection. i'm sure there are other stand alone programs that are good, but the entire package of flash, fireworks and dreamweaver makes for brutal competition for anything else.
- richbl, on 10/19/2009, -0/+0GIMP rules: simple enough
- darkNiGHTS, on 10/14/2009, -2/+1Dugg hoping you were being sarcastic...
- georgetds, on 10/14/2009, -3/+1Only the honest ones.
- digitalpencil, on 10/13/2009, -5/+3lol
- mercuryfenix, on 10/14/2009, -7/+5No thanks.
