- EmitStop, on 03/30/2009, -1/+45Those were fun. I would call a McDonald's and a Burger King at the same time, and listen to them yell at eachother about who called who.
- synapsis9, on 03/30/2009, -1/+40I miss the good ol' days with skype where it was free calls anywhere
- gcnaddict, on 03/30/2009, -1/+26Well then, if Skype is so successful, can someone tell me why eBay is trying to dump it?
- Myztry, on 03/30/2009, -3/+27Skype goes over the Internet. Not the world wide web (HTTP).
- trib4lmaniac, on 03/30/2009, -0/+18That's worth paying for.
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -7/+22ummmmm you left out "on the World Wide Web". You see the World Wide Web is accessed VIA the internet and is not THE internet. VOIP has nothing to do with World Wide Web hence my assertion that this post is stupid.
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -15/+29From Wikipedia "The term "Web 2.0" refers to a perceived second generation of web development and design, that aims to facilitate communication, secure information sharing, interoperability, and collaboration on the World Wide Web."
How does Skype fit in here? Last I checked it was a voip application no? - Pushkin, on 03/30/2009, -1/+13It fits in web 2.0 there because of the pretty logo and the strange name that has become a verb
- kent1146, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11They forgot:
11. They got bought out for $2.6billion.
That's a lot of hookers and blow. - bamafun, on 03/30/2009, -0/+11I love skype - I use it all day, every day and for more things than voip - I use it with Ustream and for instant messaging, I also use it as an address and contact book, and more.... it's also the contact link I share most often on various social media sites.
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9Still sounds stupid. Skype has zero to do with web 2.0
- omenmedia, on 03/30/2009, -1/+9They guys that made KaZaA have come a long way, baby.
- indymike, on 03/30/2009, -0/+7Skype has a great product. Will be interesting to see how they navigate all the tax issues as many of their competitors are nationalized telcos. You can actually go to jail for using Skype and circumventing paying for a phone in some nations.
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -13/+20You can dig me down all you like it won't make Skype a web 2.0 application.
Furthermore, and ironically, it is web 2.0 that will kill skype. Grandcentral and it's ilk are poised to take a large swath of users away from Skype and it is not too far off in the future. - dukeeeey, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10web 2.0 is a meaningless buzz word
- garionw, on 03/30/2009, -3/+9I would say Google was the biggest winner of 'web 2.0' but you know, Skypes awesome as well
- Myztry, on 03/30/2009, -0/+6Our company does all our inter-branch and inter-agency calls through Skype. Price aside it's much more convenient. Firstly it's hand free so you just sit back and talk. You can message them if they are busy. You can turn on the web cam ($35 dollar logitech) to show them objects. Mostly the video is ignored. We're an industrial business and have faces suited to radio :)
It's actually annoying have to use the a standard phone. Hands are all tied up while trying to jot stuff down on sticky notes.
If Skype lives up to it's potential (supplanting traditional Telco's) then it will have been an extremely cheap buy indeed. We have no issue paying for calls over skype. We just don't call outsiders often (since we don't deal direct with customers) - AFelsinger, on 03/30/2009, -5/+11"...aims to facilitate communication, secure information sharing..."
- depro9, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5wimax will open the door for Skype to become bigger than AT$T
- technetix, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Because it's free between users on the net?
- MrChunks, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4SkypeOut for me can be so-so. Skype to Skype has been a life (and money) saver for me when I've been living overseas.
Definitely turn off your downloads though and definitely, definitely turn off your torrent program and it makes a massive difference. I don't use the video facility of Skype though but the audio is like speaking to someone in the next room. I love it. - Hello1024, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4the key is making sure nothing else is using your internet connection - make sure your brother/moms etc. PC are turned OFF so you can be sure it isn't using the internet connection, and don't run any other programs at the same time, particularly torrent programs.
oh and as well make sure you buy a proper microphone and don't use the one built into the PC. - salinungatha, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4opposite for me, had mostly great results with skype and skype out.
- s0m31john, on 03/30/2009, -1/+5It's only like $3 a month now, are you that cheap?
- Sirocco, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Skype is a full VOIP application with international calling, cellular, and landline support. It's damn cheap, and uses very little bandwidth.
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -1/+5???????????????????
I am saying grandcentral will. Grandcentral IS a web 2.0 application. Skype is NOT. - brim4brim, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Or setup priority for your voice traffic IP on your router.
Also ensure your provider doesn't have poor latency/delay between sending information and other servers receiving it.
Some types of broadband are much better for this than others and just because you have an 8Mbps connection does not mean it has low latency or that you are actually receiving those speeds.
In short, run some checks on your connection, some speedtest sites can test for suitability for VOIP by checking the consistency of your connection. - radison2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank You!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Why? Because I'm right? You're the retard that thinks skype is 'Web 2.0'.
Ass clown - Charlotte_Web, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Actually, a little further research shows that there isn't a standalone VOIP adapter for Skype. DLink makes a Skype VOIP adapter, but it requires your computer to be on to operate, and plugged into the USB port. Newegg reviews also show that DLink's adapter has lots of driver issues -- not good.
The Vonage VOIP adapters are standalone, so you don't lose phone service if your computer locks up or is shut down for the night. - Pushkin, on 03/30/2009, -1/+4What is wrong with DIGG comment system lately :(
- antonio97b, on 03/30/2009, -2/+5Seriously? Are you guy arguing about this?
/me grabs some popcorn. - radison2, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3Because skype is a program that you download and install on your computer and NOT a webpage? I'm just guessing though.
- MtheoryX, on 03/30/2009, -0/+3It's not Skype... I think it's just been too long since you've seen your mum; she talks like that now. So sad.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -3/+6because ebay is a dump itself and can't afford it. Ebay has been checked off my list due to really ***** listing fees and final sale fees that has resulted in many people to stop selling on ebay. It's just not worth it. Craiglist is free and works.
- Sabretou, on 03/30/2009, -1/+4Web 2.0 *Era*
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2The article argues that "Skype is the Biggest Winner of the Web 2.0 ___Era___" (read: era), not that is the biggest winner of Web 2.0 applications. No one is trying to argue that it is.
- greener, on 03/30/2009, -2/+4I love skype, but my vote would go to hulu as the winner.
- Sail4life8, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Skype is amazing , i love it! where else can you call anywhere in the world for under 10$ a month. I use my skype as my land line. Also its incredibly reliable and the video chat is second to none.
- chiax, on 08/30/2009, -0/+1Web 2.0 was centralized on user experience more can be found at

- casemon, on 03/31/2009, -0/+1Hulu and any site that does location restrictions sucks. Don't you know that the Internet is for everyone?
It's too bad that you support a site that is inherently ANTI-INTERNET just so you can watch your favorite twit play "make believe" to distract you from reality (while shoving ads down your throat). - pamuckraker, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- Kanten, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1How long until Skype gets virus-ridden child porn?
- booststrong, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1Skype has helped me to keep in touch with my family for free, even my 82 year old grandma calls me on skype,
but to be the number one i think they need to work on some improvements!
my vote still gos for google. - wikinerd, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1Buried for being innaccurate.
First Skype does not work on the web- it just works through the internet.
I gave most of the text a miss, until the eye-catching words "Who Else" caught my eye.
Google: not really Web 2.0, though; born in 1999. (wtf?)
YouTube: still losing money, no clear monetization model, and video-serving costs are substantial. It is hard to imagine YouTube as an independent company (what else are those ads for then) - platinum850, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1That's awesome and sooo true!
- radison2, on 03/30/2009, -3/+3I know it's ridulous. But I just can't stand it when I'm looking at a white wall and someone tells me it's black. Makes me feel like I am watching fox news.
- Noncentz, on 03/30/2009, -2/+2Web 2.0 .... Its a marketing buzzword ...... nothing else
Brought to you by "Noncentz 2.0" - Myztry, on 03/30/2009, -1/+1LOL
