- mrjit, on 02/15/2008, -0/+39I'm digging this because every time I see someone using AIM, I feel like a small kitten has been slain. Get Pidgin or Miranda if you're still using AIM, they are far better.
- darkmotion, on 02/15/2008, -1/+13Papajohn56 is right up there too!
- computergod, on 02/15/2008, -0/+12Good trolling requires subtlety. You fail.
- rongon87, on 02/15/2008, -1/+11The Pidgin developers really haven't developed the add-on for the video chat yet, but soon to be expected, from what I've see on somewhere..
- Dumbledorito, on 02/15/2008, -0/+10Damn. That seems to be the drawback to all these all-in-one clients.
I friggin' hate the memory footprint and adware of the "official" versions. I do wish so many of my colleagues didn't use them... - jbond, on 02/15/2008, -0/+9All very nice. But where's cross platform Voice, Video and Skype support?
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -5/+13We have adium - and its better.
- h00ligan, on 02/15/2008, -1/+9that's not what he asked. He asked why someone would use pidgin encrypt instead of OTR, not why you would want to encrypt. I have NO idea why you wouldn't use OTR, unless PE is compatible with other protocols and such..
- praveenmarkandu, on 02/15/2008, -7/+14trust me. adiumX is better for the mac. the devs do more work
- mrjit, on 02/15/2008, -2/+9It doesn't, and thats the only real negative. I keep yahoo/msn installed for those once a year horny girlfriend nights, but everything else (transfers/chat/multiprotocol) I stick to pidgin.
- keozen, on 02/15/2008, -3/+10Seriously, go here now: http://www.adiumx.com/
- Netrilix, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Heh, I clicked this article expecting to see a bunch of useless plug-ins (the pre-installed ones are all I've ever needed), but SessionSave definitely caught my eye. Combined with the plug-in that puts history right in your chat window when you open a new IM, it's like you never shut down.
- LawSchoolBound, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6yeah, it'll close to the system tray and remain active
- ubernerd845, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Too bad some of us (i.e. me) Run Linux, and therefore can't use MSN. But MSN sucks anyway, it's full of ads.
- mooninite, on 02/15/2008, -0/+6Gaim-vv is dead. The Pidgin developers have no interest in adding Audio/Video support either.
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1 ... - inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+5No, it's not soon to be expected, they don't even support the latest version of the MSN protocol yet, no personal message or anything.
- Ademan, on 02/15/2008, -3/+8Anyone know if there's a compelling reason to use Pidgin-Encrypt over off the record messaging? Off the record messaging also works with people on adium...
- h00ligan, on 02/15/2008, -1/+6uhm.. skin it?
- Dumbledorito, on 02/15/2008, -1/+5I've never used Pidgin. How does it do with video chat to people using MSN or AIM?
- celticchrys, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4RTFA, and it will tell you how.
- Philosomatika, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4Ive been using Pidgin for a good long while now back when it was called Gaim. The only item on the list I might use is the GTK theme selector. Other than that Pidgin is perfect does what am IM should do without all the bloated crap that comes with MSN.
- mynameisjonas, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4I'm surprised no one here has mentioned meebo. You dont need to install anything and it already does most of the things the plugins mentioned in this article do. Great for using at school, work, etc. Now you can even do file transfers, group chats and voice chats, not to mention the little apps that can be developed for it.
- anshuman, on 02/15/2008, -0/+4wow , they missed Pidgin-Screenlet http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/PidginS ...
- inactive, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3I like Pidgin, but this list wasn't that good. All I want is to find the plugin for the proper smilies for each protocol.
:x means KISS on one network and SICK on another, I need to make sure I do the proper one. - akkibaba, on 02/15/2008, -1/+4They were must-haves in the opinion of the author of the article. Clearly the Pidgin developers do not agree. That's the point of plugins, they let you do exactly what you want with your software.
- Sabretou, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3Yeah, while I love Pidgin right now, Trillian was a pretty kickass IM. The reason I ditched it was that it was too slow and sort of annoying. I might switch back once that Trillian Astra thing comes on.
- computergod, on 02/15/2008, -0/+3More of a gnome plug-in, no?
- mooninite, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3Digsby looks like Pidgin (if it isn't just a copy/paste of the code). What makes it so much better? The fact it only works on Windows? Which is funny as Pidgin is first and foremost a GTK application.
- mynameisjonas, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2I agree, the old trillian was pretty good and Astra looks really promising.
- binaryloop, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2How about the plugin that stops it from ***** crashing?
- Sairgem, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Funny, it's one of the most stable applications I use.
- inactive, on 02/16/2008, -0/+2They've been saying that for months now. I don't push them, I just don't like when the people make those affirmations.
- rongon87, on 02/15/2008, -1/+3same here :)
- nailer, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2I use Pidgin at work because it lets me do IRC and Sametime in one window.
Adium, as far as I can tell, supports neither IRC nor Sametime, making it a no go. - dxgg, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2Cite your source, please.
- jstem1994, on 02/15/2008, -2/+4Can you make Pidgin minimize to the system tray? I like Trillian because it doesn't show up on my Taskbar all the time.
- MetaDFF, on 02/15/2008, -0/+2For Live Messenger you could always use A-Patch to get rid of the adware.
http://apatch.ikhost.com/ - GvnMcCld, on 02/15/2008, -1/+312 year olds.
- inactive, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1And maybe one to kill the 200MB+ memory footprint I'm currently seeing with 2.3.1 on Windows XP, before it finally crashes and burns.
- neFariou5, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Actually it's pretty useful when you have friends that have good music taste. I've discovered some good bands from Now Playing.
- sirmasterboy, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1Have you tried trillian 4, it does especially well with device support as well as supporting client-specific IM features that AIM and MSN have.
- Sabretou, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1...you are sarcastic, right?
- Sabretou, on 02/16/2008, -0/+1Mac and Linux versions are under development, if you inspect the site closely.
- enterneo, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1use the pidgin-awn plugin
- praveenmarkandu, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2it is NOT the official mac version. it is made by totally different people. they only use the libpurple library as their back end.
- InspectorGadget, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2Better ingredients, better pizza...but stupid comments.
- computergod, on 02/15/2008, -1/+2Oops, I'm just so used to people wondering why I would use encryption in the first place that I got read right past that.
- Inglorion, on 02/15/2008, -2/+3I use Pidgin and I like it, so I don't mean to knock it or anything, but "must-have plug-ins" just sound so "wrong," for some reason. You'd think any program should already have implemented any features that are "must-haves." And that's coming from someone who's a whore for Firefox extensions. Go figure.
- Dumbledorito, on 02/15/2008, -0/+1I've tried. It doesn't like MS or Logitech webcams in so far as I can tell.
