- knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+910 must-haves are 9 too many.
- JanYpe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3TAKE THIS TEST AND FIND OUT!
- jcronkhite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Another list, true, but I've never heard of Newshutch. It looks pretty cool.
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Pretty much all online tools are inferior to desktop applications (from freeware, shareware to retail). The only online applications I truly use and enjoy are the Google Desktop and Google Calendar (my wife and I use it for budgeting and storing appointments/reminders)
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't need an "online office".
- LondonDude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3So the 10 must have Online Office Apps are the same as you would expect in an offline office?
If the price is the benefit then surely you could just use Open Office or something? - JQP123, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Price is not the only benefit. Universal access from anywhere on any device with a web connection is a major benefit for many users. Safety and security are others. If your laptop is lost/damaged/stolen, you don't lose your data.
- leoedin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3really? You mean the article published in August was posted a few months back? Wow!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Article should be titled: "Online Office Apps Used By Josh Catone Which He Then Blogged About . . . Yawn"
- notesake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Another option is notesake, which allows both LaTeX and Textile markup languages.
http://notesake.com - Philluminati, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This can be a dangerous idea in my mind.
If you have a spat with Google / Online Storage provider or whoever then they might suspend your account stopping your whole business from functioning while negotiations are in progress. Your basically on their lap with your pants down. Having control over your files and your email system gives you much more safety in these situations. If you have a spat with Microsoft, for example, your business can still function you've not reliant on the software "as a service" and they can't shut it down to manipulate you.
What I'm describing may seem irrelevant or unlikely but if your dealing with extremely small web hosting companies / storage hosting companies, these kinds of issues can crop up. Especially if your business makes up more than 50% of theirs. Make sure they can't hold your business ransom.
This is just something to be aware of, not a definitive argument against it. You've also got an heavy reliance on your ISP. Downtime = lost productivity which may not be the case with a simple file server and a copy of Microsoft Office. - Grimdotdotdot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Okay: How about "Bottom ten worst online office apps?"
- tigrosupremo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Maybe I'm just a Google freak, but if you use one google app, its easier to use them all. Apps such as Gmail, Google Reader, Google Calendar, and Google notebook, all come together very nicely. This list doesn't account for the fact that inter-connectivity is so important in the On-line world of organization.
- danielwilliams, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Senduit actually uses Amazon's s3. Cool business model to utilize the service.
- kabren, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yes.
- realwat, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0I would add also online bookmarks to organize web sites (e.g. delicious or www.titook.net).
- etandrib, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Hmm. I don't think they are must haves because I don't use [all] of them. Buried as inaccurate.
- Devotia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+011. Joost.
- danielwilliams, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1There's an idea...someone should take Open Office online
- Dokument, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2seriously. why doesnt someone make the bottom ten?
