- albiniak, on 10/11/2007, -5/+40Yeah, I'm kinda over that whole "here's your latest version of iTunes....bundled with QuickTime" strategy on Windows.
- Endemoniada, on 10/24/2007, -12/+41Honestly, I've been a Winamp user since I first discovered it, back in the 1.x days. I've loved it, and continued to love it through both 3.x and 5.x. Then a friend of mine got me to give iTunes a try. I loved it.
When I started using computers, I wanted to have absolute control over everything, both hardware and software. Now, I care more about flexibility and ease of use. iTunes gives me both. I don't have to fiddle with files (why should I have to?) since iTunes organizes them quite neatly. I get album art automatically. I get a great overview in a not too shabby-looking GUI. It's really not that much slower than Winamp 5 with Media Library.
I also used to promote OGG over MP3 and AAC, but since my iAudio M3 broke and I got an iPod 80GB instead, I've moved most of my music library over to AAC instead.
Long story short, different software suits different people. Personally, I don't see the gain in using something other than iTunes. It does what it's supposed to, and that's all I'm asking for. - mpdickso, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29Agreed I hate QuickTime, why should viewing video in Full Screen ever be a 'Pro' feature? come on Apple WTF?
- Zero456, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22ITunes doesn't exactly run all that good in Linux.
- hijinks, on 10/11/2007, -6/+24at least in windows itunes is major bloat and is overkill for just managing your ipod. I use anapod and love it
- Midas7g, on 10/11/2007, -3/+18Site seems slow. Here's basically what it says.

- IGotTheMondays, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15The website has already been dugg down. Google cache: http://72.14.209.104/search?hs=sUq&hl=en&lr=&c2coff=1&q=cache%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.simplehelp.net%2F2007%2F07%2F08%2F10-alternatives-to-itunes-for-managing-your-ipod%2F&btnG=Search
- lpmiller, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17I'd respect the list more if their server didn't had less bandwidth then a cosplay site.
- mscman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14That is a damn dirty lie. I can't fit my entire music library on my nano, so I changed the preferences to allow me to manually manage the songs on it. Spend some time with your software before you bash it.

- nicku, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14When I opened the task manager and learned that it was sucking down 500mb of RAM, I switched to using foobar2000.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9So why are you insulting everyone else who does use iTMS? Explain that to me?
If you don't like iTunes, just don't use it. There's no need to hate on everyone and everything else just because you prefer something else?
If you don't like iTunes, remove it, get something else and shut up. Please. - dystopianray, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9iTunes does not work in wine. It does specific checks for non-standard environments (probably looking for debuggers) and kills itself after starting.
- NicksVideo, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11You're right.
Diggs != Page views. - soopafly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Aren't you Windows people familiar with bundling anyways? j/k
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Seriously, how stupid are you?
iTunes is no problem at all to uninstall. Just run the uninstaller...
Same with Quicktime.
As for who buys music from iTMS... So what do you listen to? I suppose it's not crap simply because you like it, right?
No, I don't listen to Akon or rap, but there are things worth buying. I want to support great artists by buying their records. Even though most of the money goes to record label suits, some find their way to the musicians, and that's better than nothing.
Sure, I pirate music too. But your reasoning is nothing but stupid and immature. If they deserve it, I'll gladly pay for the music these people produce.
They're not forcing you to do anything, that's all in your head. Microsoft aren't forcing you to run Windows (only making it hard to avoid), are they? There's Mac OS, there's Linux, there's BSD, there's Solaris...
Take a second and think about what you're spewing out before clicking "submit". You are so ill informed you make me sad. - anonym41414, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8There's this great new thing you may not have heard about. It's called a "playlist."
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9To each his own. Personally, I took the decision to let iTunes handle my music files and I've never looked back. It sorts music pretty well, and I love how it renames them automatically when I change tags.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9sorry Triplesixer u suck !! (Especially your spelling)
iTunes is NOT the worst program ever. There are millions of pieces of software that would be considered far worse.
If you don't want iTunes to manage your files, turn it off. It even ASKS you if you want it to automatically manage your library when you start it the first time. Is clicking "no" really THAT hard?
Don't blame the software when the problem exists in front of the screen. - thorgrim, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5mi_Pod for WinAmp has all that and extracting files from your iPod, but each to his own, and you might be on a Mac.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Should be labeled, "Ten glasses of ice water for someone in hell." iTunes is so ***** horrible. No amount of features is worth the struggling crawl it brings your computer to or the loads of *****/bloatware it installs on your system alongside of it.
- abandonedhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The fact that you actually know Akon has to say something.
- daggah, on 10/11/2007, -5/+9iTunes...every time I have ever tried to use it, I ended up wanting to stab myself. I still don't understand why people voluntarily subject themselves to using it.
- Kr4t05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Fair enough. Amarok2, which is to be released around the same time KDE4 is, will have Windows compatibility, though.
I have been signing the praises of Amarok for ages. I can't wait until it can be used by Windows users, too. :) - b3mus3d, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4are cosplay sites well known for not having much bandwidth? O.o
- soopafly, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5GOOD for YOU
- framitz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Rockbox rocks and does a lot more than manage music. I have an Ipod photo 60GB and with Rockbox I can play video smoothly, many games, change the look and feel, and a lot more. The ipod manages music files internally, just drop them in the folder.
- spacey, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Yeah sorry about that. Today was the last straw, I've signed up for a dedicated solution. Yeah I know, you get what you pay for. But my current (shared) provider has survived the digg-effect before... just not this time. Anyway, if there's a next time, it _should_ hold up (we'll see I guess).
- hotsoda, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Personally, I use foobar2000 and the foo_dop component which lets me transcode my FLAC files on the fly as they transfer to the iPod. The plus side is I don't have to keep a lossless and lossy library.
I still haven't found a decent solution for podcasts though. - ghandi69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I am very excited by this list. I was at the point where using my ipod wasn't even worth having to use iTunes...
- Shando, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Your comment fails. Rockbox is an alternative firmware, not a piece of software used to manage what's on your iPod.
- m1abrams, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Actually there are many reasons to no use iTunes. I like Jrivers media center which is not on the list. I use it because I have all my music in FLAC format and it transcodes the music on the fly to sync with my ipod. Sure I could get a device that supports flac, however I have not been impressed with such devices many with there lack of tag supportted browsing.
Another reason is iTunes is only great if that is ALL you use for your music. If you prefer a different ripper/encoder because mp3 encoder in iTunes is awful then you are in a world of pain. Yes you can use iTunes with an outside encoder but boy is it hairy, I have done it and it would occasionally decide to trash my entire library DB and I would have to rebuild. Not an fun task when you have a large library. I also use other players besides the ipod and iTunes does not play with it.
iTunes is only a great solution if you only use iTunes for your multimedia. And there are plenty of reason why you would not want to do that. - bdbr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I didn't mind using iTunes a few years ago, but its become so horribly bloated that its not a bad idea to investigate alternatives.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4amarok FTW!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"but none will revolutionize the music - mp3 player world again." Can someone tell that there will not be any other revolution in anything? because what you said is a great way to say 'I'm an *****'
- Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5I hate the fact that you need QuickTime to run iTunes.
I ended up ditching iTunes for Winamp when iTunes went to version 7 and music playback sounded like a scratchy vinel...mainly when I wanted to "multitask" with my computer (i.e. open a web browser up).
I don't know if version 7.x is friendlier to computer resource usage or not, but I don't feel like finding out. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3"Come on... is there REALLY an alternative to iTunes for iPod users? "
Yes.... thank ***** GOD. - monger68, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2this google cache looks like plastic dog *****
- wanzedk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Oh yes, iTunes sucks! I've been using Winamp with ml_ipod plugin for months. Only downside is that it doesn't support album arts as iTunes - it copies the folder.jpg from the music folder.
- cjhubbs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I've evaluated all of the Windows-based ones listed in the article here:
http://thehubbs.net/chris/2007/07/10/evaluating-alternative-ipod-management-software/ - JohnTheJohnMan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2download the plugin
- tecunx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@roadammy44: Forget it. My 60gb ipod has more songs than that, and itunes has updated the sofware plenty of times. Is is pretty simple to scroll down now. I have seen the cool menus on the new ipods and sincerely, they are simple and fast. iTunes revoutionized the way millions of people listen and manage their music. Yes, there will be new software, probably better, but none will revolutionize the music - mp3 player world again.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As far as I know, Rockbox runs on your iPod and doesn't handle the iPodPC sync at all. Therefor, it has no place in this list.
- JSchwage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, Vista and iTunes still don't play well for me. The iTunes interface gets all screwed almost once every 10 minutes, so I'm constantly restarting iTunes.
- LegendarySock, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3What the? Songbird makes the list but not Exaile? Exaile is a great linux-based music manager AND iPod manager. The version in the Ubuntu repository didn't work with my iPod, but the newest version available at their website integrates with it perfectly. Give it a try if you run linux, its the Amarok for Gnome.
- Endemoniada, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2That's fine, if that's what you want.
For me, Rockbox means less battery time, having to drag and drop files instead of just plugging my iPod in and letting it sync automatically and uglier user interfaces (seriously, I have not found ONE skin that looks even remotely as good as the default iPod one).
As helikopter pointed out, all those "features" are pretty much pointless if you bought the iPod for what it actualy is: A simple-to-use, stylish MP3-player. - crimpshrine, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Itunes on windows is a bloated pig.
I used Anapod for awhile, then settled on Winamp with the video plugin so I can manage viideo files also.
After using the above 2 products on several different setups, going back to Itunes feels like running in a pool. - saifatlast, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2>>Come on... is there REALLY an alternative to iTunes for iPod users?
Yes. There's a big list of them in the article. I really don't like how iTunes organizes music, so why would I import my entire library into it just to transfer files? I can do that with winamp. - AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+2The rockbox I have does both.
