- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -9/+67Nice to see a front page story about FOOTBALL for a change. A change of pace from the dull American sports.
- TheLunchbox, on 11/01/2007, -8/+58Damn you Yanks, it is football not Soccer.
- inactive, on 11/01/2007, -8/+45WHAT THE ***** IS "SOCCER"?
FOOTBALL! - coldfusion1970, on 11/01/2007, -6/+28Damn, Arsenal have done *****-up.
Goodbye Champions League place next season. - inactive, on 11/01/2007, -3/+25Correct. It is football, not soccer.
When speaking about the main American sport, one should use the term American Football, even though it doesn't resemble football in any way. More accurately, it might be best to describe it as "throw the ball to some poofter in a load of padding, then stop the game for 10 minutes whilst nothing happens, then repeat until everyone gets bored and goes home". - protossss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Thanks for all the good times TH14. I really really hope Arsenal can make it through this tough period. With all the new money in the league its a bit scary. Check his letter to the fans (explaining why he is leaving) here --> http://digg.com/soccer/An_Open_Letter_From_Thierry_Henry_REAL_PIC
- kheldorin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Well, I am worried. Henry stated that one of the reasons he left is because of Wenger not willing to extend his contract beyond 2008. Furthermore, he is affected deeply by the departure of Dein. The current Arsenal team lacks experience. It seems to be me that Arsenal is coming towards the end of a cycle. I don't think they will be challenging any major trophies in the next 2-3 years.
- t-readyroc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10Don't get hung up on what it's called. Soccer... football... It's just "the beautiful sport." (& yes, I'm a "yank")
- blaser, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Since when did Ronaldo play for arsenal ?????
- mb309, on 12/31/2008, -0/+7You could tell he was leaving as soon as he wore a Spurs top:
http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/Henry%20Spurs-thumb.jpg - todcreative, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6There's a reason it's the most watched/played sport in the world, and if you can't figure it out, well then you have deeper issues...
- Jambi, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7To any Brits that might be reading this, I too prefer the word football, but don't go blaming this on the Americans. The term appears to have been coined by an Englishman from Bristol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wreford-Brown - donnyburnside, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6A perfect description, well done. ^_^
- tinzy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It's not a rumour anymore as Henry has confirmed it in L'equipe.
- jasondefaoite, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Plus he isn't english. If the player is english ... the fee is higher. No way Bent is worth 17m
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5How long til Schevchenko announces he's going back to Milan?
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5United player. Never has played for Arsenal. Yes he was class last year, best player on the planet IMHO last season but he doesn't play for Arsenal.
- Mofoliage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The initial poster must have been a Yank since he said "soccer" and not football.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4You aren't comparing Adebayor and Van Persie to Henry surely?
They are good players but Henry is one of those you break the bank for. Typical Arsenal lack of ambition. How can they hope to stay with United and Chelsea if they keep selling all their best players. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6They couldn't possibly let him go for only 16 million. Charlton want more than that for Darren Bent; any Henry move should be in the top 10 list of highest transfer fees of all time.
- spd998, on 11/01/2007, -1/+5A gay person.
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Real Madrid went bonkers because of the upper management. Nothing to do with player conflicts.
- Lewisham, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Yeah, I think Thierry is on the rapid downhill now he's pushing 30. Maybe another three years of top-flight club football?
- duniyadnd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Ajax's Babel is tempted to go to Arsenal. I'm not sure if that's a great replacement though, I never thought he was that consistently great, but he's great friends with van Persie apparently. He's currently in the U21 squad for the Netherlands who are now in the finals for the U21 Championship - they're also defending champions.
On a side note, Henry will have a great time at Spain considering how much more open the game is there, and the less physical game will only make sure that he won't get as injured and having a side striker to go along with him (Eto'o) would give him ample more space. - sonycam, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maybe 2 years ago. He didn't really play last season and Arsenal don't really need him anymore. Maybe I'm just happy because I'm spurs, but I don't see this being a huge blow or anything.
- podcasta, on 10/31/2007, -0/+3He Cant leave! what will the gunners do without him! Damn you arsene wenger for not stopping this!
- defcon11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+416 Million for a player who is arguably in the worlds top 2 players. Arsenal ***** up even if he is 30. Injury free means Barca are going to kick ass next season. Also on a side note Eto will go. Hopefully to Liverpool! (I can dream)
- FreddieD, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Pardon my ignorance of British slang, but, what the ***** is a poofter?
- fxspec06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Barcelona = stacked.
- firearcade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"is NgrHader being offensive? Report it"
No. he's just talking out of his ass - Hasangetinya, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I was so wounded when I heard this last night. Henry is such a legend and I will miss him so much. Arsenal need to sign some top class players who can assist the wonder kids so we can keep Wenger and bring back Dein to Arsenal.
On the plus side it will be wicked seeing Henry, Eto, Ronaldinho, and Messi up front... Imagine if Arsene Wenger went to Barca, we would see football at its greatest. - ps I would never want Wenger to leave Arsenal, it was just a thought...
Gooner 4 Life... - Annon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Well, they had Ronaldhino, eto'o and messi this year, and failed to dominiate. Rijkaard needs to get their team chemistry back in shape.
- mariowario, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Arsenal still has a great group of young guys right now (Fabregas, Van Persie, Hleb, Walcott, and Adebayor). While they may not be really good right now, give them atleast 3-5 years time and they will again go back to being one of the top clubs in the EPL as these players "mature" and learn to play with each other. This is assuming no one comes in and buys them out, like Reyes.
- supernaut, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Thanks TH14. But it's time to move on. Best foot forward, eh? Let's buy Torres.
- shakdang, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2can't blame the guy, he should have left last year, but apparently Wenger and Dein promised him something that they could not deliver, the departure of Dein was the final nail and now I am 90% certain Wenger is to leave as well (next year).
I don't support arsenal, but it really feels bad to have such a talent leave EPL. - tybris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@Akronos
Pélé, Cruijff, Beckenbauer and van Hanegem, 4 of the greatest players in history, all played in the US and it did fairly little to the popularity of football in the US. Why would a much lesser player such as Beckham make a change? - Akronos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I know, but it's a little different now. MLS is not the NASL. We have a much more stable league, and Beckham, while he is clearly not as talented as the players you mentioned, is pretty much an icon. He is the most recognizable and most famous player right now, even more than Ronaldinho. MLS has learned a lesson from the failure of the NASL. This time, they are expanding at just the right pace, and with Beckham's arrival, soccer will grow into one of the major sports in this country. Maybe I am wrong... I am no psychic. But that's just what I think will happen.
- userbraindamage, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Yeahhhh... Great POINT you make there.
Because what defines the excitement, intricacy and skill of a sport is how many 'points' are scored each game. *touche - sarcasm*. You obviously know nothing.
-1 point for this post, foo' - sonycam, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3because it's not called soccer outside the US and it isn't very popular inside the US.
- brendanger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The papers are linking Arsenal with moves for Tevez and/or Anelka. I'd love to see Anelka back at Arsenal, though I guess a lot of gooners wouldn't.
- loconet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tying with Madrid for points means nothing? Madrid did far worse during the Galatico years
- has2k1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2As a gunner and a believer in the professor, I really hope he has something up his sleeves for us. Cesc is now our most prized asset, I fear that without Thierry, RVPs' ego will blow through the roof, which ain't good for him since he is yet to reach his best.
- tecunx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What? Totally insane. That tries to unconvincingly explain the use of "foot", but it cannot explain "ball".
- kden, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I wish I lived in Europe.
- GMorgan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2WTF?
Do you watch any football. Not a disgruntled Chelsea 'long ball to Drogba' FC fan by any chance. - swaggadocio, on 08/20/2008, -0/+2Anelka is a waste of space. Great talent, but his greedy brothers ***** his career by convincing him he was never getting paid enough. Imagine how good he would have been if he just stayed and developed under Wenger
- bklyn112, on 10/31/2007, -0/+2I wonder if Henry's French playing style will help Ronaldinho get back to the form that we had seen at PSG and shortly after his move to Barca. While still a great player, I think he's lost a little something. All I know is that Rijkaard has some serious talent - let's hope that they can grab the title back from the Bernabeu.
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I hop I live long enough to see the day when Reading wins the Champions League.
- Rossoneri22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+216 is nothing compared to the 30 Chelsea paid for Shevchenko...
