- williepepper, on 07/15/2009, -2/+14So how many union workers does it take to change a lighrtbulb?
- angryfirelord, on 07/15/2009, -1/+7One to fill out the paperwork, one to get the ladder, one to set up the ladder, one to get the bulb, one to get the bulb out of the box, one to change the bulb, one to dispose of the bulb, and one to collect dues.
- Jabrams2, on 07/15/2009, -0/+4I'm as surprised as you are. I've seen stories hit with like 20 though. Who the hell knows how or why?
- madk, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4Oh how I wish the best for South Africa...but I'm afraid of this. Obviously this will give them an economic boost by placing them on the world stage but hopefully they look beyond the World Cup and tackle racism, crime and corruption.
- calfalicious, on 07/15/2009, -1/+3If the strike had continued they'd have had have moved it back to Europe, which would have been infinitely better.
- Chamrox, on 07/15/2009, -2/+4I'm selfishly hoping South Africa fails and they move it to Europe... just because I don't want to have to hear those stupid horns for every WC match next year. How annoying!
- HavocXphere, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The audio techs just need to find a way to filter it out.
- Dochirin, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2There's also a backup plan to host it in Germany (since Germany has all the infrastructure used during the 2006 installment of the WC)
- HavocXphere, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Predictable. The workers just saw a good opportunity get a raise. I doubt it was ever intended as a long term thing.
The stadiums will be ready. Guaranteed. Not too sure about everything else though. Also, some of the road signs that are already in place for the World Cup are alarmingly confusing. e.g. Pointing out the correct way for a couple of kilometers, but then there is no sign at *the* crucial interchange turn-off (N4-N1 interchange). Thats the sign for going to the airport, so the tourist might extend their stay involuntarily. - Ricker888, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... back to work.
- prateeko, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2South Africa: 0
Union Workers: 0
Hmm, seems about right for a soccer match. - inactive, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1yay!
- SuperMoses, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1The workers are making $1.50 per hour. They have every right to strike when their government wants to use slave labour to build nice big stadiums for rich athletes to play on.
- ThatDeadDude, on 07/15/2009, -4/+5***** you.
- FakingFamous, on 07/15/2009, -1/+2woohoo!
- ThatDeadDude, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1You're just jealous cuz you don't have a vuvuzela.
- NastiN8, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2The problems here are not even comparable to south africa. k thx
- Presbyterian, on 07/15/2009, -2/+2I'm pretty sure those are problems in your country too.
- madk, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1You are right. I'll make sure to point those out when we host the World Cup and someone submits an article about it here. Stay on point.
- VikingBeatbox, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Huzzah!
- mamboboy, on 07/15/2009, -1/+1Constructive.
My comment wasn't meant as a jab at South Africa or South Africans, but I just strongly believe it's a bad idea to host the World Cup there.
It's widely known that countries rarely make profit from World Cup/Olympic events, and actually spend years paying off the debts - so SA aren't exactly in the position to go throwing money around - especially in these times!
Hosting the WC is primarily used as an anchor to promote tourism, but when South Africa is second in the world when it comes to crimes per capita for assault and rape, then there's a very serious underlying problem that simply can't be patched over by a damn World Cup!
Just watching the Louis Theroux documentary where he visits Johannesburg is enough to show that the country is far from ready to be hosting it.

I mean the Beijing Olympics were incredible and all, but looks what's happening there right now! The last thing I'd want to do is go for a holiday in China. - brainboy7777, on 07/15/2009, -2/+1And I should care about this more than the WBC why?
- mamboboy, on 07/15/2009, -7/+6Deciding to host the World Cup in S. Africa is going to be an epic fail on every level (transport, crime, opening ceremony). Mark my words...
- dsmx, on 07/15/2009, -3/+1Or move it to the UK where it doesn't need to build anything at all.
- PunkFenixJT, on 07/15/2009, -4/+138 diggs and front paged....hmm....
