- Hrodrik, on 12/01/2008, -1/+35How can this be on the front page with 60 diggs? The game was yesterday and M. City lost.
- shzdeR, on 12/01/2008, -0/+32what the hell? didn't they lose against united yesterday?
what kind of digg FP algorithm is this? - phreak79, on 11/30/2008, -2/+17It'll take a while but with the money they have it's possible. Kinda sad really. It's like playing Football Manager in cheat mode.
- LupeFiasco, on 12/01/2008, -0/+11"Form is temporary, class is permanent."
- EnderMB, on 12/01/2008, -2/+13Manchester City will never become as great as United, and neither will Chelsea. It's good for them to make these claims on top of their gigantic piles of money but Manchester United are still one of the few teams in the world that is self-sufficient. I know they're owned now and poisoned with the chairman's debt, but as a worldwide brand Man Utd is the biggest and best sports club in the world.
Manchester City and Chelsea will never manage this, because they've taken the easy way out by selling themselves. Sure they'll win some titles, but when a team takes on money from another source the end is always bad, just look at Leeds and Newcastle. Money eventually runs out, and clubs become tainted. Gladly, Sir Alex is too strong for the Glazers to meddle with, and hopefully his replacement (Jose Mourinho, I'd be wiling to bet) will be just as great.
That being said, it's great to see a player like Robinho join a smaller team like Man City. I'd love it if more world-class players were to join teams for pride and status over fat pay-checks. Even if a player like Jermaine Jenas were to join a Championship team like Bristol City I can guarantee he'd go down as a legend. Hopefully Cristiano Ronaldo will piss off and join a Blue Square Premier team. - DuMbGuM, on 12/01/2008, -1/+11This article doesnt make much sense after yesterday.
- UselessTrivia, on 12/01/2008, -3/+13Not knowing anything about Soccer/Footbal, this headline was extremely confusing. I thought someone was quoting "Robin Ho" who I assumed to be the porn version of Robin Hood regarding the City of Manchester's ability to emulate a man...presumably in some sort of virtual software interface. Apparently their attempts were successful in uniting virtual man and physical man, thus avoiding the skynet apocalypse.
- Maxjan, on 12/01/2008, -2/+11yeah, emulate one of the greatest managers of all time.
thats easy to do... - Danltn, on 11/30/2008, -1/+9Meh, with the cash they can emulate Chelsea better. i.e. Buy all their talent using a multi-billionaire's spare cash.
- textrant, on 12/01/2008, -5/+13Build a bonfire, build a bonfire,
put the SCOUSERS on the top,
put city in the middle,
and we'll burn the f*ckin lot. - kevdotbadger, on 12/01/2008, -0/+7City are the new Chelsea, not the new United.
- madmack, on 12/01/2008, -0/+6no they can't. as obviously seen yesterday
- kaskarn, on 11/29/2008, -4/+10yeah, well no; Right now they can't.
- sirdandan, on 11/30/2008, -3/+9***** me, City have more than a long way to go before they are even close to being able to make a statement like that.
- mrnobody546, on 12/01/2008, -1/+6Sir Alex will eat your children Robin-ho
- indubitably, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5that is actually all completely true. you cracked the code. i'm going to get started on the screenplay now
- Stonekeeper, on 12/01/2008, -0/+5I lol'd!
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Robinho should go to Fulham on a free transfer. Then Harry Potter will be truly indestructible.
- Bob24, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4beat me to it
- Supernova36, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5Meet at Eastlands tomorrow?
Also, they probably can, look at Chelsea's finishing positions before the money came in. Plus it took them a few seasons to sort it out. Money doesn't equal instant success, but it wont take longer than 5 years. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+432 YEARS CITY!
You can't buy class! - hiro, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4What the ***** is Notre Dame? Isn't that the old church where the hunchback lives? I don't think they have a football team
- kronix2, on 12/01/2008, -1/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Alex_Ferguson#Man ...
Let's see Jose, Hughes or anybody else emulate that.
Fergie turned a provincial Scottish club into a domestic powerhouse which broke the Celtic-Rangers duopoly. The last time either of those clubs didn't win the Scottish title was in 1985, when Fergie won it with Aberdeen.
He then went to Utd - who were hovering above the relegation zone - and turned them into the most successful top-tier club side of the last 20 years. No other club from England, Spain or Italy can match 10 titles, 2 European Cups, 1 Cup Winners' Cup, 5 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and a bunch of minor trophies.
He's the best club manager of all time, and it's highly unlikely anybody will even come close to beating his records, whether it's in terms of longevity or trophy haul. - azizrulez, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4this wouldve probably deserved to be on the front had Robinho actually showed up to play the game yesterday, but sadly he was cleary outclassed by a Rookie 18-year old
- AboveandBeyond, on 12/01/2008, -0/+4Some people gotta get paid...
- mamboboy, on 12/01/2008, -5/+9ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
- zombiecarlin, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4There is a chase on to break the top four in the Premiership. On one side you have Man City, decent club decent history but have always sat in the shadow of their neighbours, owned by vast billions in Oil Wealth willing to throw crazy sums of money at foreign players as a means to purchasing success. On the other side you have Aston Villa the club that founded the football league, one of only 4 English clubs to win the European cup but have been ***** for 20 odd years, based in Englands second largest city with no real rivals nearby. owned by a modestly wealthy (by Man City standards) American billionare who is slowly building the club and supporter base while buying young English talent. The difference Man City have the financial clout to break in there and win a few things but only Villa's way of progression can have a hope of sustainable success like Man Utd.
- cleric04, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Looks like the Scousers will be on top in a couple hours :-D
- estacado, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Tomorrow? More like yesterday.
- LinuxCobra, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Wilson Palacios of Wigan Athletic is Harry Potter..
- shimmi147, on 12/01/2008, -0/+3Why is this guy getting dugg down? He's right. Man City is gonna try to buy their way through to the title just like Chelsea did.
- diecastbeatdown, on 12/01/2008, -1/+4hah, citeh get to splash some cash and all of a sudden they are going to be a top club? no, i think not. their sugar daddy will leave soon enough or grow tired of losing. its not like chelski where abramovich is actually into the game and is addicted to spending big on it to win. unless they are willing to throw hundreds of millions into the club it is just not happening.
i love arsenal, all these other clubs having to spend enormous amounts to succeed and some going into debt over it makes me laugh. - hcoimbra, on 12/01/2008, -4/+7He is right - in 2-3 years time they will be a force to be reckoned with. They will be willing to pay millions for players like Aguero, Benzema, Villa, etc when other teams won't be willing to pay over the top.
For now they are still an inconsistent team with only a couple great players though. - kronix2, on 12/01/2008, -2/+4Hahahahahaha. The despotic Arabs who own Man City think they can emulate Chelsea.
People forget that Chelsea were already a successful club, having won several domestic cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup in the 10 years prior to Roman Abramovich's arrival. They could also guarantee Champions League football to anybody they wanted to sign, and had a recent history of big-name players like Zola, Desailly and Vialli. On their day, they were a match for any team, including Man Utd and Arsenal.
Man City were only promoted to the Premier League in 2002, have won nothing since the 1976 League Cup, 32 years ago. They can't guarantee UEFA Cup football, let alone Champions League football, and Robinho by himself has more talent and name recognition than every player who's played for Man City since the 90s. Right now they sit in 14th, just 2 points above the relegation zone, which is a fair reflection on their ability as a footballing team.
Let's make this absolutely clear: moving to Man City is career suicide for any elite player. Robinho moved there because Chelsea refused to pay the extra £2m out of principle, and because Real Madrid wanted to punish Chelsea for publicly courting Robinho. That, and the reported £160,000 a week he's given by the Arab billionaires.
The idea that Aguero, Benzema or Villa would touch Man City with a 50 yard pole is absurd. Unless they're desperate for the money, they'd sooner move to a big European club and try to win domestic trophies and the Champions League. - inactive, on 12/01/2008, -1/+3***** CITY
- asgardshill, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Robinho: Bruce Wayne's fallback financial line when all his other investments are in the crapper.
- EnderMB, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2First of all, yes, I am a Man Utd fan, gone to Old Trafford and everything...
Secondly, Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic footballer, but as a person he embodies everything that is bad about sport. Last summer Man Utd fans weren't talking about the CL victory over Chelsea, no, they were talking about this idiot whining over a transfer to Real Madrid.
As a Man Utd fan I would love nothing more than to see Sir Alex sell him off for a cool £50M, anywhere but Real Madrid. Perhaps a straight swap for Kaka would be better? - kronix2, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2For the non-Brits, textrant isn't advocating genocide; he's merely saying that anybody from Liverpool should be burnt alive.
It's friendly footballing banter. - gijoe86, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2Maybe somebody has made it clear that Man City has a ways to go?
- kronix2, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2They have a way to go before they're at the level of Villa, who are playing some awesome football but still find themselves 5th.
City will only break into the top 4 if one of Man Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool collapses financially, and that isn't going to happen. - aduzik, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2I'm an American, so my entire knowledge of United v. City comes entirely from that one episode of "Life on Mars".
- thyagobr, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2Hahaha, britishes... :D
- shzdeR, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2I know that, but it was only put on front page approx. 6 hours ago. I'm questioning why it became popular today, not when the article was made.
- Rubiksphere, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2I don't think City is going to be anyway near the strength of Man. United, or even Arsenal, for at least two years. It's nice to see other teams taking the fight to the big four, though. I just wish Hull City would've kept their streak going.
- modsuperstar, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1The City owner is willing to throw hundreds of millions of dollars into the club. There is is already talk of a £200 million being available for acquisitions during the transfer window and this summer. Many of the big Euro clubs just won't be able to compete with the money that City will be able to throw at elite talent.
- halfboiled, on 12/17/2008, -0/+1lol
class is permanent mr. robinho.... - mrnobody546, on 12/01/2008, -2/+3you sir
