- mborys88, on 04/03/2009, -3/+24Dugg for being a soccer (football) post. Thank you!
- kenyan, on 04/04/2009, -1/+16Terrible idea. Why would it be ideal to reward a team that goes against a shoddy, injured defense? Or one that gives up after 45 mins. The way they handle tied teams (by goal differentials) is enough.
- inactive, on 04/04/2009, -2/+16you are so retarded you need to grab the "football" with your hands, then run around "hugging" each other and smelling other mens bums.
- Stavrosian, on 04/04/2009, -0/+11Technically he's backing the introduction of points based on the number of goals you win by and explicitly not the number of goals you score, so he's valuing attack and defence.
- soccermatt34, on 04/04/2009, -2/+10Wow what a horrible idea.
- McReynolds, on 04/04/2009, -1/+8Pansies call it soccer.
- mborys88, on 04/04/2009, -1/+6Bah...either doing it to get a rise out of us or is really a dumb hick.
- SohailKhanifar, on 04/04/2009, -2/+7I dugg for thumbnail.
- indubitably, on 04/04/2009, -0/+5wenger never looked better
- DrDetox, on 04/04/2009, -5/+9I love you Arsene Wenger you are a god. Good luck Arsenal tomorrow against man city. Yes Eduardo, Yes Arshavin lets do this.
- superkeer, on 04/04/2009, -0/+4He's not advocating it to advance Arsenal's cause. They already play attacking football... just have had rotten luck actually getting the ball in the net this year. All Wenger wants is to see more style and attacking flair in the English game. Man U's defensive run was indeed impressive this year... but it was really dull, and an incentive to reward consistent attacking play might keep some of the mid to lower-table teams from just laying down when up against Man U.
Oh.. and go Liverpool. Despite being a Gunners fan and hating Man U anyway, I'm just so beyond sick of them right now. - bbrassi, on 04/04/2009, -2/+5I think that would undoubtedly create higher scoring games, no question about that. On a side note, what the hell does Kim Kardashian have to do with anything?
- zebrapoo, on 04/04/2009, -1/+4You're looking at goals scored, moron.
He's talking about points for a positive goal difference.
It would be liverpool, chelsea, manu, arsenal, everton, man city, aston villa and so on. - DrDetox, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3wenger completely changes when he is not wearing a suit. A miraculous transformation.
- JobConcierge, on 08/10/2009, -0/+3Woah! Seems like Wenger's too influenced from his Brazilian vacation. He needs to head south to Italy, to restore his prior balanced self.
- mborys88, on 04/04/2009, -0/+3Every time I read this I have to laugh. This is great.
- 1gunners4, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2The "Big 4" is a title; by saying that Arsenal is ***** compared to the other "big 4," he means the other 3 teams that make up the "Big 4."
Edit: for reference, the Big 4 are Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United. - NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Mate - I went to see Monsters vs Aliens - I recognized the name Colbert from here - ***** overrated.
- al3xoath, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2I dont know if you missed the memo secondwheel but the leading team in the league lost to Arsenal.
and villa blows. - HappyScrappy, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2And beat each other up.
- partysan, on 04/04/2009, -2/+4There are only 3 other big teams.
- Hardflip, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Villa play Man Utd this weekend.
- djpray2k, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Players already have goal bonuses
- 1gunners4, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2I'm not sure why you're being dugg down, mate, given that you didn't say anything false in the least. Arsenal had 6 of their starting 11 out at one point; how can anyone expect strong cohesion during that?
- stevenhawking, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2It's called Futsal, although a smaller field isn't the only difference.
- djpray2k, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2wont happen and a bad idea.
Goal difference already applies and as with the current season could well make the difference between who wins the league. - McReynolds, on 04/04/2009, -0/+2Boy oh boy. You don't get it, do you?
Plus, A.W is inviting a discussion. My opinion, is they should reward a high positive goal difference and punish a low negative goal difference. So that if a time if the magic goal difference is 3 and a team is 2 down they don't just give up hence rewarding the opposing team if it manages an extra goal. That way you would fight not to lose by big margins. - schiavosaurus, on 04/06/2009, -0/+2I agree with OasisR to an extent. A win of 4-1 and a win at 7-1 are the same thing, basically, so to reward a team for a couple of goals on the end is not the point of a system like this. I think a cap for goal differential would be in the game's best interest, notably, a 3-goal cap.
I still fail to see how the point system would work, as wins get 3 points....would each goal above a tie get one point? Even half a point seems a bit too rewarding to me. - Hardflip, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Sounds like Wenger has been getting his ideas from Platini.
- DrDetox, on 04/04/2009, -1/+2You must be out of your bloody mind considering they are in the top four mate. Villa are burnt
out and are going to get another spanking this weekend by Liverpool. - NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1I think he was taking the piss. Maybe he did say it but he wouldn't have meant it.
Now if he really wanted to improve the game and make a sensible rule change he would promote a rule granting points for hitting the wood-work.
That would be just and fair and reward the marksmanship of hitting a much smaller target than an open goal. - indubitably, on 04/04/2009, -1/+2liverpool already spanked them last week 5-0. hopefully manure won't have such luck
- Sachnussen, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1This is the strange thing.. the only time a football (soccer) team will ease off is if they're playing a lower-division team in the cup and don't want to embarrass them, or if they've got another game in a couple of days and need to save energy. Otherwise they'll "run up the score" big time - the phrase has no meaning. I speak as someone whose team was quite unnecessarily stuffed 1-9 once by a team that couldn't stop scoring. No-one expected them to relax and play keep-ball - that would have been insulting.
- serif69, on 04/04/2009, -3/+4Looks like someone doesn't appreciate good defence.
- kevie, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Instead of paying players higher salaries pay em less but give them bonus money for scoring goals his ideas right just not a league issue more a team thing.
- Hardflip, on 04/04/2009, -1/+2That's a ridiculous idea too, and doesn't let evenly matched teams both gain some form of merit.
- Sachnussen, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1Try Google, you twerp.
- 1gunners4, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1You fool. Arsenal this year is 2-0-1 against the Big 4 and still have home matches left; none of the other top 4 squads can say that.
- azizrulez, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1the thumbnail totally goes with the article.
Oh and since Liverpool have scored the most goals this season,i dont mind if such a preposterous rule were to be put into motion. - alistairlp, on 04/06/2009, -0/+1What good is it beating the big teams if you lose to ***** ones?
- NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Bet those words are ringing in your ears now.
- NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1So, you've watched Bolton and Wigan then young Jedi
- OasisR123, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1This could en up to teams running up the score, like it happens in american football (college football, Bellichick,...)
- ucuntu, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Nah, the main thing that turned me off of Soccer is the play acting. I can watch a low scoring game of rugby any day and the 'war of attrition' is what's fun to watch.
Just because a sport doesn't have high numbers in the scoreline doesn't mean its boring. It means the defensive play is excellent. - NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1You're a numpty.
- cleric04, on 04/04/2009, -2/+3There goes the Voyeur again.
- mborys88, on 04/04/2009, -2/+3And most Pansies that call it soccer don't know this (sorry if this is duplicate). The explanation is "Americanized" so football is referred to as soccer:
Football was invented around 1876 by a man by the name of Walter Camp. He got the idea from William Ebb Ellis who was playing a game of soccer when he picked up the ball and started to run with it, therefore breaking the rules and giving Camp the idea for the game.
Rugby (started in England, 1823) was introduced to North America by the British Army in Montreal in 1868, which played a series of games with McGill University.
In 1874, McGill arranged to play a few games at Harvard, which liked the new game so much that it became a feature of the Ivy League.
Both the Canadian and American games evolved separately from this point into American and Canadian football.
So when it come right down to it Walter was innovative enough to modify rules to "make his own sport" he just wasn't very creative when it came to the name of Amercian Football.
I've heard it called: Eggball, HandEgg, but one that matches above....Rugball.
And the take away: No matter what my fellow Americans think the game of football was created in England first and our version was derived from another British played sport (Rugby).
Granted the MLS is "developing" still but it's in a hell of a lot better shape than it was during it's inception in 1996. Our country has come a LONG way with "soccer." Since the addition of Seattle and now Philidelphia, Vancouver, and Portland... the sport will only continue to gain ground in the US.
And in reference to dumb asses comment that "soccer is for pansies." If you took any American Football player today and put him in a full 90 minute "Soccer" game they wouldn't last...but they'd be really good at "tackling" and getting red cards and trying to take a time out to catch their breath. But if you take a player from just about any "soccer" team an American football team has a place kicker, punter, and a field goal kicker.
Even though I played American sports predominantly it's European sports I find more satisfaction in. "Footie" and Cycling especially. Even at my age I'm still competitive in both. Don't see too many "senior" American Football leagues. But they do play "Flag" American football. And Flag American Football is for pansies. ;-) - ivand67, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1Heh... Forgot about that.
- NoozeHound, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Don't you be talking about the manager that bought Philippe Senderos as not appreciating a good defense. Pah!
- Brak710101, on 04/04/2009, -0/+1I don't know why I'm being dug down, a smaller field would speed up the game and increase the shot count. It just makes sense.
It's like the NHL changes to keep the game at a higher pace. -
