- PatoLucas, on 11/01/2009, -1/+24That's true, here in Mexico people is racist against native mexicans too, for example "indio" which is a word used for native mexicans, is used as an insult on a daily basis, on store shelves you see a lot of products to whiten the skin, it's common to hear "güero" (blond) used as a flattery. It's sickening.
- e2superman, on 11/01/2009, -9/+25Racism is alive and well in Mexico. Example: If you are are black Mexican (there are lots) you are probably living in a 1950's america with regards to discrimination.
- e2superman, on 11/01/2009, -1/+16No I mean black people from Africa. There were a lot of them taken there just like in the US to be slaves. Today there are up to a million Black people of African decent there. It is kind of amazing how little this fact is known outside of Mexico.
- elwey, on 11/01/2009, -1/+16Not true, first of all there are not too many black Mexicans, and people treat them the same as any other Mexican. An example is Johny Laboriel, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Laboriel he is a very respected singer and comedian. Another example is Kalimba http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalimba_Marichal and Giovanni Dos Santos http://mexico.worldcupblog.org/files/2009/05/gio.j ... the best Mexican Soccer player IMO.
In Mexico it's not an insult to call your black friend "Negro (Black)", it's a nickname commonly used and it is said in a friendly way. Different history, different perceptions... There is no "black community" because they all are considered just Mexicans as everyone else.
On the other hand, it is true that people discriminate the direct descendants of Mayas, Zapotecas, Olmecas, Chichimecas, etc. (Native Tribes) Which is something I feel ashamed of as a Mexican. And in general, racism is not the word you would use since the predominant discriminatory problem in Mexico is "Classism" (Discrimination on the basis of social class) - 22justin, on 11/01/2009, -2/+16I think in Spain, Athletic Bilbao for a while only played with players from the Bilbao region...
this is somewhat common. - tootim, on 11/01/2009, -0/+11I thought it said Mexico's Top Sorcerer because it was above a Lord of the Rings submission in the RSS feed.
- Hu99, on 11/01/2009, -4/+15Chivas fan from Canada checking in here. I'm not Mexican or even Hispanic, but I was overwhelmed at the passion for Chivas when I visited Guadalajara. It truly is phenomenal.
- inactive, on 11/01/2009, -2/+9So would a British Nationalist be "racist"?.
- Zaetha, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6Not mexican, learn to read.
- TheTruthHurts, on 11/01/2009, -0/+6don't be an idiot , black Mexicans play in that team too. "it's nationalist" not racist. if you cant tell the difference stfu.
- Zaetha, on 11/01/2009, -0/+5e2superman is wrong, but PatoLucas is right... except when he says e2superman is right. elway explains it perfectly. In Mexico racism is very uncommon, but discrimination based on social status is widespread. Middle class natives are widely accepted in society, and the poor ones are indeed discriminated.
- Kikinou, on 11/01/2009, -1/+4There was a time when Celtic Glasgow only employed Catholic players while Glasgow Rangers only had Protestants. That derby was a proxy for inter-denomination war. It's no longer that way now, anything goes. Better than suicide bombings hah! Maybe the Sunni and the Shiites should do this ;-)
- danfive555, on 11/02/2009, -0/+3"your country is rotten to the core"--not so most immigrants come from 3-4 states, that's all (Zacatecas, Michoacan, Sinaloa) That doesn't signify we are so damn rotten.
"Mexico has a few people at the top making all the money and owning all the land while everyone else works for slave wages." ---not so, in our most industrialized zones, livelihoods are similar to Italy-level development (Monterrey, Mexico City, Guadalara), they are not making slave wages and the number of professionals are extensive (people don't become professionals to earn a slave wage).
"No wonder they are racist. They simply want to vent their anger." ---Mexico is helluva different, beginning with our religion, even our Virgin Mary is brown skinned. Race just means something different to us, its every of the following flowing freely at the same time: nationality, ethnicity, belonging, collective conciousness. Happiness is easily apparent in our people.
"Chivas is no different then the Romans and their gladiator games." --It's soccer, LOL. And Mexicans are a lot more educated than you think. - IsraelCuevas, on 11/01/2009, -5/+8arriba las chivas!!!
- blankmedia, on 11/02/2009, -3/+5CRUZ AZUL!
- e2superman, on 11/02/2009, -0/+2Maybe, there were a lot of black slaves there regardless.
http://www.mexconnect.com/articles/666-slavery-in- ...
Also Mexicans often enslaved (tienda de raya) the local indigenous people until the early 1900's. Plenty of bad history to go around just like the South US. - Zaetha, on 11/03/2009, -0/+1No, and if you and the people you know are using that term in that way you're all wrong. Racism is discrimination based on race. Discrimination based on social status is called "classism".

- jcoewarrior, on 11/01/2009, -0/+1lol... my father told me that when he was in his teens the rival team mentioned in this article, Club America, gave away tortas to encourage people to become a fan of their team.
... i doubt they would give away tamales.. they are somewhat difficult to make. even cheaply i would imagine. - inactive, on 11/01/2009, -2/+3Do you mean the Natives?.
- TheTruthHurts, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1word!
- Snap65, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2wrong chivas sir.
- whipnet, on 11/02/2009, -0/+1I think he means by not allowing other "races"
* - jamesey, on 11/02/2009, -1/+2all chivas are scum
- whipnet, on 11/02/2009, -1/+1discrimination (justified or not) is called racism in the US if it's against a non-white.
* - tofslie, on 11/01/2009, -1/+1He is quoting Cleveland from the Family Guy, chill.
- seraph1982, on 11/02/2009, -1/+1BURIED FOR *RAMPANT* RACISM
- jamesey, on 11/02/2009, -2/+2chivas usa are scum
- inactive, on 11/01/2009, -5/+5WTF is the point of this article? A guy inquiring about why people wear socks?
- danfive555, on 11/02/2009, -2/+1Superman, please note that American Black Slaves would escape to Mexico for freedom, because we outlawed slavery about 50 years before the U.S. Black people are not heavily discriminated against mainly due to the fact that a lot of the brown skinned mestizos, can and do become extremely dark either through working out of doors or just being born this way...
- e2superman, on 11/02/2009, -3/+2Lack of acknowledgment sometimes makes it difficult for Afro-Mexicans to take pride in their African heritage. Many have chosen to assimilate completely into Mexican society. A recent survey (2005) found that most of the people who show obvious black ancestry prefer to be considered mestizos. There is also outside pressure from other Mexicans that causes them to assimilate. Because their existence is not widely known throughout Mexico and the rest of the world, they are often assumed to be illegal immigrants from Belize or elsewhere in Latin America (Sailer, 2002). There have been many accounts of Afro-Mexicans being pulled over by the police and being forced to sing the Mexican national anthem to prove they are Mexican (Graves, 2004). This discrimination causes many Afro-Mexicans, if they are able, to conceal their African lineage.
- GlenQuagmire, on 11/02/2009, -2/+1You forgot Memín Pinguín.
A Mexican icon.
And that's true, there are no black or african americans in Mexico. They are just Mexicans.
Prietitos but Mexicans. I have a lot of friends who are nicknamed Negro. - salvadorwii, on 11/01/2009, -5/+2Just wanted to add something, there's a mexican singer called ***** (and not, that word is not considered racist here in mexico)
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/*****
in usa he's known as Flex - BotaXero, on 11/01/2009, -15/+12In the U.S. we would call this racist.
(Even though it's nationalist. "Mexican" isn't a race.) - Lavarock, on 11/01/2009, -10/+7DATS RA-CIST
- Maykelroy, on 11/02/2009, -5/+1"on store shelves you see a lot of products to whiten the skin, it's common to hear "güero" (blond) used as a flattery. It's sickening"
First I'd like to say im not trying to be rude just want to point out...
It's not for you to judge their style. And if you think it's "sickening" for them to consider calling someone "güero" (blond) as flattery, they are both humble & faltering and that is racist.
I am light skinned (mexican/spanish) and if I tell someone they has a nice tan its to be nice, if another white person were to say that was a "sickening" that would be bad also right?
Please excuse my English - LAmandingo, on 11/01/2009, -8/+2Mexico has alot bigger issues then if Chivas is racist or not. When 12 million of your citizens have to leave their family to seek work in a neighboring country its a pretty sure sign your country is rotten to the core. I live here in Los Angeles and sometimes I have trouble remembering its still the US. Mexico has a few people at the top making all the money and owning all the land while everyone else works for slave wages. No wonder they are racist. They simply want to vent their anger. Its the same thing with old, unemployed hillbillies here in the US. Their lives are ***** and they want to feel like they are better then someone . .anyone.
Chivas is no different then the Romans and their gladiator games. Its way for the rich and powerful to appease the poor, uneducated masses. I'm willing to bet that Chivas offers free tamales at some games. - HotLeper, on 11/01/2009, -18/+4oh noes. illegal aliens in the mexican football team.
