- itsmikey, on 06/17/2009, -0/+21makes business sense but does it make football sense? remains to be seen
- inactive, on 06/18/2009, -0/+13Titles implies they will not sign any player over 26. Description clearly states that they won't sign anyone over 26 "for large transfer fees"
BIG difference - subliminali, on 06/18/2009, -2/+13I think frank Ribery is secretly 50 years old. I dont buy 26 for a guy that looks like that.
- inactive, on 06/18/2009, -2/+12Is that Latin for "I can't ***** type"?
- ultimaet, on 06/18/2009, -0/+9His face was disfigured two years into his life in a horrible car wreck, he has never looked youthful.
- solid12345, on 06/18/2009, -0/+8Maybe he's just speaking British english
- Stavrosian, on 06/18/2009, -0/+7I don't think there is any legal issue with adjusting your current valuation of an asset (since players are bought and sold between football clubs) based on predicted returns. Even the best player in the world signing a five-year contract at 27 will be next to worthless at the end of that contract.
They aren't denying anybody the right to work for them, or refusing to consider people for jobs, they are just restricting their outlay on players whose worth is certain to depreciate, and who therefore can be considered a certain loss-maker for them financially. They still employ older players, and always will, they will just look to get them when they are young and cheap and keep them there for life (see: Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville.) - soccerman90, on 06/18/2009, -0/+6i have no doubt that Ferguson will be able to put together a quality squad, he always does
- EdocSil, on 06/18/2009, -1/+6Wow, I don't understand how fat asses can be athletes in American "football"...
- LaGStAr, on 06/18/2009, -0/+4You forgot the word "got" before.
And, of course, that changes what your comment means... to the truth! - PeanutCheeseBar, on 06/18/2009, -1/+5If you're not Manc...
...it's probably because you're older than 26. - therealrico, on 06/18/2009, -0/+4Players usually peak around 28 overall. Goalies can play up to their forties, but forwards usually decline after they turn 30. Midfielders and defenders go into their low to mid 30s
- ssquared22, on 06/17/2009, -0/+3They'll save a bunch of money this way, but it remains to be seen if this allows them to put a younger, quality side together.
- damack, on 06/18/2009, -0/+3This is Alex Ferguson your talking about. You could say he has a little bit of clout in that respect.
- bartofdahammer, on 06/18/2009, -0/+3wow, sounds like the owners of the Maple Leafs
- nesstheking1, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Don't digg hum down, that was great!
- inactive, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2A team should be a blend of experienced & young turks. & Not investing money to make more money doesn't make business sense at all. Winning matches could fetch more money for Man U than saving it.
- Daniel591992, on 06/18/2009, -2/+4Slave labor? They just paid $130 million for C. Ronaldo.
- GalacticRerun, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Why do they have to be Turkish?
- MonoDede, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2That's how it is in most sports. There will always be exceptions, but for the most part athletes have a very short timespan to dominate a sport.
- offrdbandit, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Salve application can be quite laborious.
- dvsbastard, on 06/18/2009, -4/+6Just out of interest, I wonder if this age discrimination would be allowed in any other industries...
- grodrigu, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I think it's because they realized they paid too much for berbatov
- miamiflashfan, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2No, that was Real Madrid.
- stroudma, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2meh, depends on the sport and the different types of athleticism involved, you see hockey players still going at a very high level past 40, or on the flip side of the coin someone like a sprinter would be past their prime by their mid-to-late 20's
not to familiar with soccer, seems like the shelf life of a player would be into their 30's though - ViscidGobs, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Except ManU wins.
- alkidance, on 06/18/2009, -2/+4I didn't realize anyone over 40 would behave like a child.
- Orsenfelt, on 06/18/2009, -0/+2Man UTD have plenty of very experienced players to guide the young guys. Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Van Der Saar. All reaching 35+, All played top flight european football for years and all regularly play in the first team.
Also, Man UTD are in some £600 million debt that's been hovering around the club for a few years now. They really need to get rid of it and, to be frank, they don't have that many high value players they could let go. Ronaldo already went for £80 million. Any other player who could fetch similar price tags is far, far too integral to the team. Infact I think Rooney is the only other player who could get that kind of price and he is going no where. - durant0s, on 06/24/2009, -0/+1Sir Alex is finally taking the Arsne Wenger approach?
- Vulphaestion, on 06/25/2009, -0/+1Ironically Salve is Latin. I guess that's why your comment is funny.
- ultimaet, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Johnson should be coming in, if Liverpool can then sign either a back-up forward, or a class left wing, they should be able to do it.
Realistically they should have won it this year, doh, Stoke. - JonTheGoose, on 06/18/2009, -1/+2My dream of becoming a Manchester soccer star is over before it even began!! D:
- brownsound00, on 06/18/2009, -0/+1Well, they do have a pretty good track record for pulling guys from smaller obscure clubs and making them successful football players. I feel like this is a move away from the Chelsea sign and mold strategy, and more to the roots of development and growth.
- bilbohicks, on 06/18/2009, -1/+2Yeah that's called "English" - the mutated version mumbled across the pond is "American English".
- K4Lic0, on 06/18/2009, -2/+2Hmm, is that legal? Or does 'ageism' not matter in the UK?
- Harelip, on 07/07/2009, -0/+0It's hardly discrimination, they'll still employ older players but won't spunk tens of millions up the wall on signing them...just like a regular business would be reticent to throw a massive golden handshake payment at a potential employee who was five years from retirement age and had his best years behind him.
- aserer511, on 06/18/2009, -1/+1can't blame em. athletes past 30 are nearing on their prime
- subliminali, on 06/18/2009, -1/+1seriously? now i feel like an *****. my bad frank.
- Hu99, on 06/18/2009, -4/+3Whatever plan they want to follow I don't care as long as MUFC fails. I'm so sick of seeing them at the top of the EPL.
Liverpool!!! - inactive, on 06/18/2009, -3/+2salve labour
- ManUnitdFan, on 06/18/2009, -6/+5Yes. If any other job required you to run around a pitch for 90 minutes, I suspect age discrimination would be just fine.
- k1prime, on 06/18/2009, -1/+0United can't even dream of Ribery. He's going nowhere.
- ucccft, on 06/20/2009, -3/+1Why are we talking about LOSERS! They Lost! they got their ass handed to them by MESSI! Case Closed!
- SmackMyMac, on 06/18/2009, -4/+2YES! I Still Have a shot!
/s - 22justin, on 06/18/2009, -6/+2utd lick balls. buried
