"Her clothes fall off?"
"Instantly." - epstephen, on 01/29/2009, -0/+17I'm an MLS fan, and I'm mixed on this whole ordeal. On the one hand, he knew going into his contract exactly what the MLS is and where it stands among professional soccer leagues of the world. On the other hand, the L.A. Galaxy and MLS have botched his tenure in so many ways. His presence has been marred by the poor standings of the L.A. Galaxy (not his fault) and too much weight is placed on his shoulders, leaving fans angry at him when he doesn't make a game due to injury or English national team obligations. I think he would have been a sensation the past two years if at least the Galaxy were a decent team.
- bodegit, on 01/29/2009, -2/+18What happened to "Bringing soccer to America"?
- Cannonballkid, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13Can you blame him? Play in the MLS or Serie A? I think you'd be hard pressed to find a player who would choose the MLS in general. However we'll see how much playtime he gets that might change his tune.
- beesaretasty, on 01/29/2009, -2/+15Let them have that bum. He came here for easy money and never played hard.
- drlha, on 01/29/2009, -2/+13NFL games can end in a tie.

- Danltn, on 01/29/2009, -1/+10How come this is almost the complete opposite of what the BBC article says?

Hopefully he will make the move permanent though... - Pelapp, on 01/29/2009, -0/+9A sport that makes no money.. ?
Then why are the tv deal for the premier league alone worth 2 Billion dollars ?

Classic. - ZeeZee2k, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7He was on sportscenter top 10 plays with a sick free kick

- angelgabe, on 01/29/2009, -3/+9Lets not forget that there's no time outs in soccer. That means no natural un-intrusive time for tv stations to insert commercials. If the station can't sell commercials, they don't make money. No one's gonna sponsor a sport that makes no money.
- reddevild, on 01/29/2009, -1/+7i'm pretty sure the NHL in recent years has been slowly passing up NASCAR in popularity, but then again, the NHL did the right thing by eliminating ties after the lock out (gotta love shoot outs).
One thing that they could do to the MLS to try to make it better (as in eliminating ties) would be to bring back what they did in the NASL in the 70's (yes, when Pele played for the New York Cosmos). There is no technical penalty shootout (shooting from the dot 12yds out, which in soccer the goalie is pretty much guessing and hoping). You start off the shooter 35 yards away from the goal and he has 6 seconds to shoot, more so in the style of an NHL shootout.
But really, the main problem with soccer in america is that we americans have short attention spans. We dont want to sit for 45 mins watching a sport without being able to take breaks to take a piss or go get another beer. it just doesnt work over here. However, if they actually took a tv timeout every few times the ball went out of bounds and actually stopped the clock when it did, they would probably get a boost in american viewers but the rest of the world would get pissed at us (Americans going and ***** it up in their eyes)
/rant - cslawren, on 01/29/2009, -4/+10He's such a ***** prima donna.
- CDoug03, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6The next time do underwear modeling, I am definitely sticking a roll of quarters down there.
- jer21, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6"...I've seen it all."
- slyzxx, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6Milan is an awesome club so yeah he would want to go back they have pretty much the best players there. They have
Dida
Paolo Maldini
Ronaldinho
Kaká
and many many great players on that team. - Bhatch514, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6Toronto.... the Leafs are no good so lets try soccer.
- Cheeselover, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5The guys over at LA right now are going "*****, who's bright idea was it to let him go play for AC?"
I feel torn on the debate. AC is a great team, but Beckham has a job to uphold for the Galaxy. Leaving them would be like a slap in the face to the league that he originally wanted to help get started.
Yes, I am also a little sad, I was hoping we'd get a chance to see him on Toronto FC! Guess not. - Demorto, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Beckham served his purpose of selling out MLS games for 2 years, but I'm not really sure there's any excitement with him in the states anymore, seeing as his team is terrible and they also just lost Landon Donovan.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Hmm. Get paid a ***** of money to play in LA, or spend the last few years of his career flogging his guts out to push his body through hell to be fit enough to play for a good team for a bit longer before he retires?
It really is a tough choice! Credibility or cashmonay. - jcgreenx, on 01/29/2009, -4/+8Well, if he has a choice he doesn't really have a contractual obligation now, does he?
- allcdnboy, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Certainly, but he's doing what he's being paid to do and that's branding.
- hiro, on 01/29/2009, -1/+5Who'd live in the US when they could live in Italy? Not a difficult choice

- Bhatch514, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4http://web.mlsnet.com/standings/concacaf/champions ...
Problem with that is that Montreal threw Toronto out of CONCACAF. - inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Explain baseball and hockey then.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -9/+12The problem with soccer's problem in the US are:
1- We already have 4 major sports that are extremely popular, NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, and to a lesser degree NHL.
2- Americans are turned off by the faked injuries. Every time an opponent barely brushes against someone they drop to the ground crying like they were hit in the face with train. As soon as the penalty is dealt, the pain is gone. Reminds me of how my little bro would cry to my mom whenever we had a fight or argument, then she would spank me, and suddenly his tears were gone, replaced by a smile. '
3- Americans hate a "tie." Some one wins or loses, that's how real sports are played. - tk0680, on 01/29/2009, -2/+5Not enough big numbers to satisfy American fans?
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3hence your name?
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Go to Milan, it's a great club.
- Table16, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3I liked having him play for the galaxy. It was neat for a while but obivously he was not producing on the field. I understand that he is not a player that will put on the moves and take people on. He's a provider which when he actually did do that he was one of the best on galaxy. BUT it did seem like he was operating at some lower level. Most of the time he was outclasses by the rest of the MLS which was quite funny and embarassing to watch. I recall his one incident with Jesse Marsh on Chivas. Maybe he does play with more passion at some bigger club, which is why he produces good play.
I don' think the MLS needs big stars, it just needs people to bring the style and flare the game can bring. America needs to show that the MLS is a league that should be noticed by the rest of the world. It will just take time. - FreddieD, on 01/29/2009, -1/+4I can give you one big reason, and what Im about to say is generally unpopular with my fellow americans. We tend to not really follow a sport where an american isn't the greatest player (or right up there). Remember when people were going crazy about tennis when Sampras and Agassi were in their bad-ass #1 vs #2 rivalry? Now tennis has really fallen off the mainstream, while a player like Roger Federer was establishing himself as quite possibly the best player that ever lived.
To a lesser extent, people are not happy with low scoring games. As far as americans are concerned there is only a cumulative 45 seconds of action in a 90 minute game. I personally disagree, but I think it's only because I really enjoy the sport so I can appreciate the nuances. I find golf boring as hell to watch, but if I was an avid golfer I would enjoy the little things about watching the tournaments other than Tiger Woods and the occasional 40 foot put that gets the crowd roaring. - tk0680, on 01/29/2009, -1/+4Look at the bigger picture re: wins/losses. Any competition ends up with a winner - even if an individual game within that competition may not.
- 64705, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3@ somberlainesomberlaine: come on, not everyone in country is going to attend a soccer game in any capacity, let alone an MLS game! If the statistic of 3.5 million is true, I think that is a pretty good attendance for what has often been defined as a minority sport in the USA when compared to American Football or NBA.
- Sinn3r, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3In other words he wants to go play for a prestigious European club but the wife likes hanging out with other celebrities in Hollywood too much :\
- nexmachina, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3No matter how you slice it, Italian calcio is the best in the world. Chi non salta Milanese eh!!!!
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -2/+5it is possible, but extremely rare, unlike soccer where it is just as likely to happen as not.
- greygat, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Victoria won't let him leave the US. She loves the Hollywood lifestyle way too much.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3He's sucked during his short injury-heavy career in the states. Let Milan pay galaxy the money for him, good riddance.
- GTC55, on 01/29/2009, -2/+5I'd trust the Big British Castle. But agree, he should stay there and not mess about in the American 'leagues'
- phreak79, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2I think he's surprised a lot of people, myself included, by how well he's played at Milan. No idea quite how he'll get out of the Galaxy contract but I strongly suspect he will do.
- tk0680, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2Baseball? The sport that is dubbed boring almost as a running joke?
Hockey is a better point, but it benefits from a very small playing area and fast, fluid movement from the players. Football (soccer) is played on a pitch several times larger and obviously involves running, which isn't going to keep up with skates. - Azathothh, on 01/30/2009, -0/+2calcio?
- Cannonballkid, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Shevchenko > Dida then again Kaka' is above them all
- danzimnikov, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2Jesus, did anyone see that free kick goal by Beckham for Milan? He did not come close to doing anything like that in the US. He actually played with pation for Milan. Its sad that he came to the US just for money.
- stephenamp, on 01/29/2009, -1/+3Maybe the home nations didn't get very far but you're picking and choosing your facts a little there. David Beckham used to be the greatest crosser of the ball in the world playing for the now World and European champions in the greatest league on the planet.... but there's a reason Man United sold him to Real Madrid... and same goes for him moving to play Major League *****. Nobody stays young forever.
- LinuxCobra, on 01/29/2009, -0/+2I just bought tickets too.. but honestly one player is not going to make MLS better. The entire league needs to upgrade and it wont happen overnight.
I just want to see more games being played and less restrictions on teams (ie salary cap, international player etc) -
