- LMControl, on 03/05/2008, -9/+48Oh.... so that's what $100 a barrel of oil buys nowadays.
- darkhero, on 03/05/2008, -6/+25Dubai doesn't make much money from oil. Last I check it was only 6% of their GDP. I know a lot of you are Americas pointing to OIL. Stop making us look stupid.
- darkchild82, on 03/05/2008, -3/+19Jeez, like they aren't content buying everything else in this world.
- deuceswilde, on 03/05/2008, -2/+17Dubai makes most of its money from being a trade hub, they don't actually have that much oil so they invested the proceeds from that into actively diversifying their economy.
- Emaze, on 03/05/2008, -3/+17Yup. Some of us love it and follow it more than American Football.
- Aerandir, on 03/05/2008, -3/+16Eeeemmm...we are talking about The Premiere League...ENGLISH Premiere League.
Besides, what's your point? That Digg = 100% American users?
Just saying...
=An AMERICAN Football (soccer) Fan= - mptsxtps, on 03/05/2008, -3/+15Yes, do yourself a favor and watch the Champions League today around 14:45 ET on ESPN2
- br0pbr0p, on 03/05/2008, -1/+12I don't understand why Liverpool fans seem to want DIC to buy from Gillett and Hicks considering DIC is in this purely for business interest. FFS, they are called Dubai Investment, and it's the "investment arm" of the Dubai government. They constantly whine about Gillett and Hicks but these guys are proven sport owners, unlike DIC. Montreal Canadiens are doing great this year, as well as the Dallas Stars. Granted, Texas Rangers is still a joke but Hicks still put in a lot of money to it. It's time for Liverpool fans to wake up and see that Rafa can never win them the league title due to his rotation policy, not Gillett and Hicks. Rafa spend over 40 million pound, only United spent more than that, so you cannot accuse them of not spending on the club.
- deathsquadx, on 03/05/2008, -2/+11Say goodbye to your Carlsberg sponsorship.
- atchon, on 03/05/2008, -2/+10Yes
- ennTOXX, on 03/05/2008, -6/+14I'm glad to hear they rejected it. I just hope they aren't asking for more money... :||
- wbgo, on 03/05/2008, -1/+9You're glad? Obviously not a Liverpool fan, then. I am and I'm gutted that idiot Hicks is still at the club.
- sagat, on 03/05/2008, -2/+10As an Aston Villa fan I am very happy that Doug Ellis rejected the Gillet Hicks offer in favour of Randy Lerner but still I can't help but feel the scousers are giving them far too much stick. Benitez spent nearly 40 million last summer, the team is star studded and their performances have been crap surely the buck must stop with the manager not the owners.
- davet2, on 03/05/2008, -0/+7Liverpool fans hate this because of the broken promises from Hicks and Gillette - mainly that they wouldn't put the club into debt. Which they've done hugely buy borrowing money to buy new players, and are about to do by borrowing even more money to build the new stadium (and a smaller one than promised too!).
All of this debt has been put directly onto Liverpool. We can see Liverpool going the same way as Leeds did if it's not stopped soon.
So we want them out. Now! - Jenadae, on 03/05/2008, -0/+6http://www.usatoday.com/marketplace/ibi/dubai.htm
Just backing up your words for you. - Aerandir, on 03/05/2008, -2/+8Good call, it would suck to see such a good team under "New Management".
It would be like Chelsea, which buys the biggest superstars, and eventually fade away (Andriy Shevchenko, anyone?) - Jenadae, on 03/05/2008, -3/+9Its actually the most played school sport in the US.
- dignews, on 03/05/2008, -0/+6Completely agree, im a through and through scouse (although I live in manchester) and I think they have ruined the club, I want Rafa to stay as well. He's an amazing manager in Europe just not as good in the Premier but I think he should still stay.
- azizrulez, on 03/05/2008, -0/+5does this mean, they actually want to do something good for liverpool,or are they holding out for a billion?
- igor420, on 03/05/2008, -3/+8Gillett and Hicks out!
YNWA - C0MF0RTABLYnumb, on 03/05/2008, -0/+5Wow, I can't believe this is on digg. I wouldn't sell them either even though the have had a rough season. I think they actually might have a chance along with arsenal to win the CL, and I not even a fan. Forza Roma!!!
- RyanBlueThunder, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Yeah, and LFC fans are delusional if they think any new owner (including DIC) will pay for a new stadium and players without financing the deal. DIC is the same as Hicks...leveraged buyouts and private equity. DIC will use just as much financing and debt. The debt hasn't done in the Manc scum, and it wont hurt Liverpool.
Hicks is not a Russian billionaire, and I'd hate to LFC go the way of Chel$ki anyway. - noots, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4dubai itself isn't oil driven. But the people investing IN dubai mostly are.
- EnderMB, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4I honestly cannot see why Liverpool need this or need a new manager. If they get fourth that's their ambitions reached and anyone who ranks them above Arsenal, Chelsea or Man Utd aren't being realistic. Liverpool need to invest in new talent and build for the future instead of buying the odd expensive player and crying when they don't meet expectations. Also, Steven Gerrard is turning into the Thierry Henry of Liverpool. I reckon he should be sold on elsewhere in the world and use that money to get new and upcoming talent. For Gerrard Liverpool could get around seven players tipped to be world-class.
- saxreturns, on 03/05/2008, -1/+5Yeah... but football's excellent.
- aethelberga, on 03/05/2008, -1/+5Everyone has their price. Eventually DIC will hit it.
- krytz86, on 03/05/2008, -1/+5Chelski always pay over the odds for players who play boring football. Roman Abramovich, please die.
Ashley Cole can die too, biggest ***** at the club. - metapop, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4perhaps another emirates sponsored team? would be a shame for l'pool to lose carlsberg after being with them for so long.
- Emaze, on 03/05/2008, -3/+6So does your ***** of a mother, but we don't complain.
- Nall03, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3I'd just like all this out of the way and out of the press, to get on with what it's all about and play some football.
- Number23, on 03/05/2008, -4/+7Big ups Staines Massive!
- br0pbr0p, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3FM isn't accurate in that they do not take into account that strikers need to play week in week out to get their timing. In FM, as long as they are "Match Fit" they can put them in and as long as their morale is superb, you can expect them to perform. Hell, I have 2 squad that I rotate and both can win against any team almost.
However, in real life, rotation doesn't work. When was the last team that won the EPL using rotation? None? - Malarie, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Gilett also own the Montreal Canadians!
- br0pbr0p, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Gerrard is so overrated for 2 reasons:
1. He is English, so the English media just hypes him up.
2. He plays for an overrated team where no strikers can score beside Torres, so his occasional nice goal gets overemphasized. - RyanBlueThunder, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Not when they bought it for $431 million, but it will be worth $2 billion in ten years. The $800 million figure includes the debt that has been financed for new stadium costs and new player transfers. Hicks and Gillette would 'only' make about $50 million each. That's not bad for me, but for a billionaire it's nothing when giving up such a huge opportunity. LFC will be a money gravy train!
- daridave, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Mr. Gillett is a very smart business man. I don't know much about Hicks, but I'm pretty sure if they made this decision, it's for a very good reason. Happy I am, arr.
- SwiftKick34, on 03/05/2008, -1/+4Glad to see money can't buy everything.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 03/05/2008, -0/+3Hicks is fine. Hicks and Rafa are getting along well. It's Gillette that's the pissant weasel. Gillette was the one who approached Klinsmann. Gillette blew the original deal that LFC had with DIC, then lied about putting debt onto the club. Now Gillette wants to make the quick pound by selling up fast.
If Rafa has a future with the club, it's with Hicks buying out the entire club. - ronaldinho, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Man Leeds.....that was a really bad episode. The fans really got raped in the ass there
- EnderMB, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Not necessarily. Some players have stats attached to them that indicate whether they aren't consistent performers. Generally I do agree with you though, that FM is a poor indication of Football in the real world.
Then again, I managed to get Bristol City, favourites for relegation Promoted, and look at where they are in the Championship now. Perhaps it's a sign? I'm off to get Chelsea relegated. =] - Hermiod, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2I never thought I'd see the day that a Football story made it to the front page on Digg. :-)
I'm not sure why anyone thinks DIC will be any better for Liverpool than Hicks and Gillett have been so far. - jeebus16, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2So does your profile pic, did you just get punched in the face when you took that?
- gudnbluts, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Are you implying that Dubai's major product isn't oil? Are you even daring to suggest that oil and gas accounts for only around 6% of their economy?
How dare you. That would make everything said in response to darkchild82's comment nonsense. - mptsxtps, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2That's the reason why he rejected it. He believed that the offer under-valued the shares. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=513642& ... Most fans are cautiously welcoming the offer.
- jax1492, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2I watch soccer/footbal, i don't think any of my friends watch or follow the games. when i was younger we all played soccer at school but i think about freshman year it dropped off.
- kazamx, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2You know they are investing all those oil profits into US and European companies don't you. take a look at the biggest shareholders of Morgan Stanley and other big banks
- Jeffler, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2Canadiens*
And Hicks owns the Dallas Stars. - EnderMB, on 03/05/2008, -0/+2To be honest most teams will go this way soon once the owners want their investments returned back to them. If any of these businessmen were smart they'd take a lower division team for a million and transform them into a Premiership team.
I give it 10 years and teams and managers will drop like flies with the obscene money and magnitude of owned teams in the Premiership. - Xeworlebi, on 07/25/2008, -0/+2Canada is a part of America, for some reason people think the U.S.A. = America
- inactive, on 03/05/2008, -1/+3LOL! HALAL Meats God Willing Akbar Ltd. has a nice ring to it.
