- gthrank, on 11/14/2008, -0/+17Message to Adidas or Nike: if you started a program to donate used cleats to people like this, I'd come in to your stores and buy new ones, donate my old ones.
- nardo510, on 11/14/2008, -0/+9this is an amazing story, oh how people struggle to survive. Here in CA all I hear people bitch about is gas prices and other crap. While it sucks things are getting more expensive this story puts things into perspective. I am glad some boys have the opportunity to make themselves a better life.
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -3/+10Someone forgot drug-dealer and televangelist.
- JoaoPe, on 11/14/2008, -0/+7Is there any way to send them money to sneakers shoes? How?
- JoaoPe, on 11/14/2008, -0/+6I'm from Portugal and we've great connections with some African countries mainly for historic reasons. Our best soccer player of all time have is roots in Mozambique. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eusébio
We're used to ear stories of kids with great soccer potentials and they can't play just because of the lack of infrastructures and materials (like sneakers, balls, play fields). It's seems like a stupid reason but that's true. Most of that kids can't show and earn money from their truly potential.
Sports sometimes are the only way out in some countries. Some way to send them money or used/new sneakers or soccer balls would be great and can really make a difference. - blumpyX, on 11/14/2008, -5/+74. Play for France like all the best African football players
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/14/2008, -0/+2This is a compliment, right?

- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Not too many make it to #3.
I wasn't sure any one was in my lifetime...
As an American, I'm damn proud to say that maybe more can make it to #3 now. - jfreeman, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.
We must remember that there is poverty like this all over the world, and that our first response cannot always be to just hand them a better life. We must help them to help themselves, or at least stop keeping them from helping themselves, which we do through our handouts. We create a culture of dependency when we should be encouraging independence. That is the best help you can give. - mksmothers, on 11/14/2008, -1/+2Africa vindicates the superiority of western culture.
The result of the core achievements of Western civilization has been an increase in freedom, wealth, health, comfort, and life expectancy unprecedented in the history of the world. The achievements were greatest in the country where the principles of reason and rights were implemented most consistently—the United States of America. In contrast, it was precisely in those Eastern and African countries which did not embrace reason, rights, and technology where people suffered (and still suffer) most from both natural and man-made disasters (famine, poverty, illness, dictatorship) and where life-expectancy was (and is) lowest. It is said that primitives live “in harmony with nature,” but in reality they are simply victims of the vicissitudes of nature—if some dictator does not kill them first.
Above paragraph from Edwin Loche "The Greatness of Western Civilization" - pathouston22, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Everybody can achieve who apply themselves. The people who fail just make excuses, no matter what race or gender. It might be harder for some over others, but thats no excuse.
- foohookups311, on 11/14/2008, -4/+4bullsh*t, It would be silly to deny that African Americans are on a level playing field with the whites of America. However, let's look at the positive they are making serious headway. To narrow it down to three choices as you do, you put another barrier in there way by spilling this propaganda. Yeah they may have to try a little harder but they can rise to the top just like any other American.
- MikeyBillz, on 11/14/2008, -2/+2Who knew that the KKK was on Digg too!

http://www.ThongHunting.com - brotherfranciz, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1Get your story straight - western civilisation or USA? Eastern civilisation or Africa? It seems like you are trying to argue in parallel i.e. make generalisations.
Besides, you are truly mistaken - where did western civilisation originate? Greece. No offence to the Greeks but they aren't exactly a world power anymore.
Also, look at the state that the USA is in - not exactly a great example anymore:
"In contrast, it was precisely in those Eastern and African countries which did not embrace reason, rights, and technology where people suffered (and still suffer) most from both natural and man-made disasters..."
Hurricane Katrina anyone? - germanboy098, on 11/15/2008, -0/+0u little c*nt, the reason they play soccer all day is to have a hope of a better life
- dookie1481, on 11/14/2008, -1/+1Read the book "How Soccer Explains the World." Excellent read.
Jay - Gonavy1, on 11/15/2008, -1/+0mksmothrs r u for real "Africa vindicates the superiority of western culture" WTF who says that you racist *****
Go suck a dick - vilago, on 11/14/2008, -4/+3you forgot a lot of other choices:
basketball player, engineer, CEO, Senator, computer programmer, Chef, Hotel Manager, can anyone add to this list? - Grazfather, on 11/14/2008, -2/+1tl;dr
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -4/+2Watch out for those landmines
- inactive, on 11/14/2008, -4/+2How on earth are African-Americans on a level playing field with whites?
- mksmothers, on 11/14/2008, -3/+1Soccer is god-awful boring, that's why Americans don't play.
- zoethebitch, on 11/14/2008, -4/+1The U.S. will never win the men's World cup as long as soccer here is a suv/minivan sport.
For the vast majority of U.S. players, the goal is a college scholarship. Since the youth clubs get no financial return from that outcome, the players have to pay the clubs while they play.
So now the entrance process for clubs starts with "Can you pay?" If not, it doesn't matter how good you are.
I think this article would be wasted on most travel/select players who whine about the grass being too long on the field or the swimming pool being closed at the hotel they're staying at during a tournament... - inactive, on 11/14/2008, -7/+1If I played soccer all day long, I too would live in poverty.
- Gonavy1, on 11/14/2008, -6/+0Oscar goes to my school he is dirty and a really good guy
- bigtallmofo, on 11/14/2008, -11/+5Hmm.. similar to African Americans in the United States. Three apparent choices now:
1. Poverty
2. Rap star
3. Apparently, President of the United States
Not too many make it out of #1.

What is Digg?
