- skored, on 10/12/2007, -2/+55This is the biggest thing in American soccer since Pele
- musters, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Yeah but I'd pay a 30 dollar ticket to watch him do it!
- blork1, on 10/12/2007, -10/+38No, that simply means North Americans have no taste.
- mantorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28$50 million per year is insane money for someone who's spent the majority of the last year on the bench. The total payroll for the entire league is probably around $50 million before this deal. But, they'll make it up on shirt sales.
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28David Beckham is going to get breast implants?
- aeproberts, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33He is a great player but he is also old. He is not going to be running circles around anyone. Beckham isn't even really a scorer, he is more of a setup man with great crosses and corners.
- ToRoE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Entire MLS league salary is 27.9 million, so Beckum is making almost twice what EVRYONE else combine will. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot!
http://www.digg.com/soccer/Beckham_to_make_2x_as_much_as_the_rest_of_entire_MLS_combine_in_move_to_LA - mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26in other news, USA has a soccer league, with apparent money
- BillFarber, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32I'm certainly not gonna say that the MLS is on the same level as the European premier leagues, but Beckham is in the twilight of his career. I doubt the other teams are too worried.
- damndj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Hopefully this will bring some much needed attention to US soccer. While I think it's great he's coming to Amercia, I can't help but feel a little disappointed that the MLS seems to be a retirement home for players past their prime.
- cybermort, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24yeah he is done.
USA is where world class players will come to retire... get pay well, barely force your self and still manage to amaze everyone - numptydumpty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22ricearoni...
lol, a 'pansy sport'? is that why you guys have to put on giant padded suits to have a game of rugby? do me a favour. - redfan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Becks has never run circles around anyone, but his ability to make long passes and crosses will be huge if LA can get someone on the end of them. Plus it'll be interesting to see how LA's attendance both at home and on the road grows.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Exactly. Going from a European league to MLS is like retiring from your job to become a consultant.
- porch88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15exactly - this move increases the Galaxy's payroll by almost 2500%
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You realise they average around 20,000 people per game, and that they have their own stadium (The Home Depot Center)?
- overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17This is only important if I get to see more of Posh Spice.
- shark615, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Who cares Ronaldos best days are long gone, the guys is old, tired and more washed up then Beckham
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13No, people who don't like Soccer are gay. American Football is the most *****-erotic thing I have ever seen, except maybe wrestling.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14he better run circles around them for £25mln a year.
(holy ***** this guy make a million pound a fortnight) - TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hmm...not sure this is what Governor Arnold meant when he promised to bring Football to Los Angeles.
- lysdexia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hilarious reading the assessments of Beckham from people who clearly know ***** all about football.
This guy has only ever played for three outfits - Manchester Utd. Real Madrid and the England national team. None of those are famed for playing players less than first class. He is a superb player - absolutely from the top drawer and I'd say entering his prime, not past it. What little Beckham has lost in pace (he never had a lot to begin with) he has more than made up for with gathered experience and how he read the game and reacts. Ball control, delivery and invention are all in the sublime class. The guy is only 31, but he'll surely know that taking care of himself should extend his career into his mid-late thirties. Teddy Sheringham anyone?
He'll be an absolute superstar in the USA and I hope he acts as a catalyst to lift the game in that country. I'd love to see a US team becoming another of the footballing greats because that's what it's all about - great teams, great players and great matches. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Yes, it is. He's used to playing for England, Man Utd and Real Madrid, have you any idea of the quality that plays in those sides compared to the MLS?
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Why would you want to see more of Leatherface?
She is ghastly. - elbeeble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Beckham may not be at his prime, but he will still be a great player to watch in the MLS. He still has one of the best free kicks there is, and will be a great draw for the league. Players like Beckham will help the MLS develop into a stronger league by drawing in more supporters.
- unit101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I guess his wife wants to be close to her scientology friends.. hehe..
- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well, duh! Let's see, he could sign with a European club, sit on the bench, not be able to walk around due to his overwhelming popularity...OR he could sign with an MLS team. Play as much or as little as he wants. Live in LA, be the biggest soccer star in North America, be considered one of the keys to popularizing soccer into the mainstream and still be able to walk around and not be absolutely mobbed all the time.
Of course it was a life decision...
Oh, and the $50M a year doesn't hurt, either. - snigacookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You guys are morons. Beckham still plays great soccer. He just was surrounded by more ambitious players at Manchester. If Real Madrid had a holding midfielder like Roy Keane then Beckham could truley unleash his potential. Real tried to make him play defense. Becks just is not a defensive kinda guy. If you saw him in those Real games, he was one of the hardest workers on the field. He hustled while everyone else in the mid stood around waiting for the ball. That kind of ***** happens when you got too many playmakers. You ***** need to learn more about soccer. And of course, he's going to be the #1 target for L.A. opponents. He's just gonna replace Cobi Jones.
- r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10He's going to have a field day on free kicks, that's for sure. Those keepers won't know what hit them.
- trouble916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6As an English-born living in California, I can't wait to go to a game!
Although... who knew an MLS team even made $50M a year to give directly to Becks? That's just a boatload of money. It will definitely bump Soccer up here, but not as much as the rest of the world. Having Californian Scott Speed in F1 has done surprisingly little to raise F1's profile here in the US. - heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Donovan just ***** his panties...
- OandA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The MLS is better than most people realize. You have to put it into context. The league is 11 years old. I don't think any league has come as far as MLS has in 11 years. remember it took decades to establish the powerhouses of soccer around the world if not 100 years.
- loconet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@XISUPERMANIX
Let's get something straight here. While the movies and music (not for me personally) bit might be true, only Americans and Canadians watch your sports. - drlha, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Agreed, but for $250 Million, its a pretty good life decision.
- Bidger, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11>>Ever heard of Michael Jordan?
Nope can't say i have - DisembarkedOne, on 10/12/2007, -17/+23Damn, I can't belived this. He's gonna be running circles around those guys.
- roxya, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Beckham can deliver crosses and score free kicks - that's all. He isn't fast or strong. He might do alright if this team has a good target man in the box (I wouldn't know since I've rarely heard the name L.A. Galaxy, let alone anything about their players :D)
- garyh84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Beckham is quite fun to rout against. So LA hatred + Beckham hatred can make for a fun night!
- hydrosnowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5unfortunately America will only pay attention to scott speed if he is winning, which is impossible with his current F1 team. welcome to America Beckham.
- heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I am an American, born here, too, and I watch soccer. So you are wrong. And all of my friends who go to soccer games? They are all born and bred in America, too. Wrong again. How about all those Americans who filled the stadiums at the World Cup this summer? Yep, a lot of them were born here, too.
What the hell do you expect in LA, white boy? You are at a soccer game in LA, probably a Chivas USA game, right?
If people speaking Spanish at a soccer game bothers you, I don't think it is soccer that is the problem. My guess is you'd have a problem being anywhere and surrounded by Spanish speaking people. - iheartcrack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I live in L.A. and I will certainly be going to Galaxy games after this.
--NOW IF WE COULD ONLY LAND RONALDO!!! - iheartcrack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4HA! It's MLS, there are no bandwagons. We have neither bands nor wagons...but we're getting there ;)
- SeaBass22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If he were working M-F, 9-5, his hourly pay would be $25,000 per hour.
- atb12688, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hes good but hes not like extremely better than mls guys... His best skills are in free kicks where he will no doubt dominate. That doesn't mean he will dominate in regular play, however.
- mindsnare, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8mate, that chick is nastier than britney spears
- overbored454, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14At least soccer, for all of its lack of popularity, still seems to be a mostly pure sport. The other major American sports, while seemingly more entertaining, are full of greed, selfishness, and overblown egos.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh its over alright. Players that move from Europe to the US have competitively thrown in the towel and are looking for one last big payday.
- MalachiConstant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Cue the attempt at an acting career in 3... 2... 1...
Now if only Zidane would come out of retirement to face him in the MLS. Headbutts! Deuce, Deuce! - sleepandtvgood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The best thing MLS should do now is to get another star to sign with another major city's team (maybe the New York Red Bulls?) and create a sort of rivalry, that should draw some attention and gather new fans.
