- mobbo, on 11/04/2009, -1/+18Yes, we do. Very quietly, some MLS teams out-perform NBA and NHL teams in attendance. You probably don't know this because your average American MLS soccer fan prefers the scene we enjoy vs. the major American sports scene (ie: terrible announcing, commercials every 40 seconds, "athletes" that are really overpaid *****, etc.). We take the sport and the teams we chose to be loyal to very seriously. And we're very happy that the MLS has been and continues to grow without your support. It's more word-of-mouth, which makes growth slower, but the fan base much more loyal.
It's difficult for your average American sports fan with the attention span of a cucumber to pick a local MLS team and follow/understand how the points system works, international tournaments, World Cup qualifying, club teams vs. national teams, etc. I happen to be a big fan of the Houston Dynamo. They play in MLS, competed the past 2 - 3 years in the CONCACAF Champion's League, SuperLiga, and other international club tournaments. My favorite Dynamo players are frequently called up to play on the US Men's National Team (which is actually really good this time around) so I follow them too. But in my experience, an NFL or MLB fan (from anywhere other than Boston/NYC for MLB or Dallas/NYC/Philly for NFL) is so fair-weather, they'd drop their support as soon as they watched a 0-0 tie.
We're happy, and I know I'm taking the bait by replying to your douche-y remark because bashing soccer is the cool thing to do (we're all very impressed by the way), but just thought you should know. - serif69, on 11/04/2009, -3/+15No, they don't. Hence Beckham leaving.
- SniTT, on 11/04/2009, -3/+15go watch nascar plz
- RetlawST, on 11/04/2009, -2/+10Beckham was a terrible team leader. He's ***** fantastic at football, but didn't know how to treat a team worth *****.
- Cannon49, on 11/04/2009, -0/+8The MLS pays most of his salary. Not specifically the Galaxy.
- TwwIX, on 11/04/2009, -0/+7I can't believe that they wasted all that money on this *****. What the ***** did he exactly contribute to the team?
- trevorjez, on 11/04/2009, -0/+6I dugg you up even though you said you're a Dynamos fan.
Too bad the Sounders will beat you at home this weekend ;) - mobbo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5I play soccer all the time. I am an athlete. I am currently in the Army (you gotta be in shape, you know?). And MLS posts exactly how much players make:
http://www.mlsplayers.org/files/september_15_2009_ ...
As you can see, probably 95% make less than $1,000,000/year.
No need to freak out because I called it a "game". Excuse me. I thought when you played a sport like soccer, you did it to have fun...like a game...that's what I do WHEN I PLAY SOCCER TWICE A WEEK. That's why it's called a soccer game, or football game, or baseball game. One reason I like MLS is because the majority of their players aren't paid with crazy contract money. They're approachable, and they don't act like their ***** doesn't stink. The minute there's a TO-like player in MLS, it's dead to me. - dimebagtwenty, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5The players for MLS make around $50,000 a year.
- mobbo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5A lot more than 50% make less than $1,000,000/year... which seems pretty reasonable to me for someone who plays a GAME for a living.
- eastbako, on 11/04/2009, -0/+5Can Beckham loan me 350 million til he gets back to L.A.?
- anang0, on 11/04/2009, -2/+7a "game"? lol. you are obviously not an athlete or have never even worked out before. being a soccer player is also f not the hardest, but the hardest sports ever. the field is big and u have to constantly be moving for 45 minutes with no timeouts.
and the pay is before taxes ofcourse. - dalittle, on 11/04/2009, -2/+6I think that is why he made the comment. To dumb to know what he just read.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+4Give me a break. Most athletes get the pay deserve, which is not much. I have no problem with them making as much as they possibly can. I think it's great Tiger Woods is a billionaire. But don't pretend that it's due to it being so much harder to do than anything else. It's a game. Get over it.
- andrewa, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3No.... just a troll. Even if you've really no idea who Beckham is then it's just a quick Google away. ImageofFear is only posting this comment to annoy football (soccer...) fans because he's a dickless troll.
EDIT: for comprehension and identification! - arial, on 11/04/2009, -0/+3I don't really keep up with MLS but did the Galaxy even come close to making the money back they spent bringing Beckham to LA?
- p2theny, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2good riddance adios!
- str1fe, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2It helps that more fans show up to MLS games than the total capacity of any NHL/NBA arena, but most MLS markets don't perform that well, at least to my knowledge.
I'm a big Sounders supporter, as well as a fan of my US National Team and Chelsea FC (I'm wearing my Chelsea shirt right now!). My favorite sport is hockey because I love the fast pace and the excitement, but soccer is great to watch too. I enjoy the finesse of the athletes. A good soccer match is just as entertaining as a good hockey match, but it requires a different type of appreciation. Soccer at its best is UEFA Champions League or EPL.
Oh, and if you want to talk about overpaid *****, take a look at the European leagues. It works both ways. - illustrick, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2but he sure does look good in briefs. i'd do him.
- MrX742, on 11/06/2009, -0/+2man he needs to commit to the MLS and LA instead acting like a baby and going back to Europe when things don't work out here in the US....he could care less about the success of MLS and soccer in the US.....
- eljitto, on 11/04/2009, -0/+2I played soccer till i was 15 and am playing varsity this year for my high school and still ref.
I love playing the game, but watching it on TV is boring cause it is 100% passing, and an hour into the game they lob it up a bit and shoot. - anang0, on 11/04/2009, -2/+3hes being paid 200 million for 5 yrs for NOT playing. can u imagine being an MLS player who works hard but gets nothing compared to this guy? 50% of all MLS players make less than a million a year.
- mobbo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1trevor, highly doubtful, but should be a good game. That first game was 0-0 but I was on the edge of my seat the WHOLE TIME and screamed til my voice was gone.
cannon, you're welcome! DeRo was my favorite player on the Dynamo and MAN do I miss him!! I have the jersey to remember him by HAHA - ucccft, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Yes! He is still the number 1 ICON for all the gays in England
- Cannon49, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Thanks for Dero by the way.
Now if only we could beat the ***** Bulls :( - lolwatermelon, on 11/04/2009, -3/+4So if we don't watch/care about soccer we're automatically NASCAR fans?
- breadfred, on 11/04/2009, -1/+2Decent? I hope so, but be aware. They are close friends with Tom Cruise and consorte..
- sgtbutterscotch, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1Well said, but it's kind of hard for a soccer fan with an attention span greater than that of a cucumber to pick a local team when there is no local team. Having no teams in the southeast is pretty weak.
- MonoDede, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1lolno.
- mobbo, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1str1fe, you are correct, but I wouldn't say "most" under-perform. I think it was stupid to give LA a 2nd MLS team (Chivas USA) and I disagree with Kansas City having ANY sports team, let alone an MLS team. MLS got a little too happy in the early to mid 2000's by giving franchises to any city that promised a stadium. Lately they've been smarter though. Seattle was an EXCELLENT move, Philly will come online next year and they should rival the passion of Seattle. Houston has always been a great crowd-drawing franchise except when they have games at 2pm in the summertime (that will change with the new stadium). Toronto has a great fan base as well.
- MonoDede, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1A soft voice.
- chillsk8er, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Columbus 'til I die. Guille and the boys are gonna end this scoring drought tomorrow. MLS Cup, here we come.
- lolwatermelon, on 11/04/2009, -0/+1too* dumb
- ucccft, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1"He's ***** fantastic at football" What kool-aid are you drinking?
As soon as he joined LA Galaxy, they came in DEAD LAST, both years LOL LOL LOL!
He is the most over-rated piece of Garbage, and the only morons who think that he even comes close to be a so called footballer are the Dumass English! - ImageOfFear, on 11/04/2009, -4/+4Yeah I'm actually a Hockey, Baseball, Football fan.
By the way,
I think that is why he made the comment, to dumb to know what he just read.*
Thanks. - cwcentral, on 11/04/2009, -7/+7Can they just let Milan take him permanently? It makes the Galazy look more like joke and vacation team than anything professional or helping MLS.
He just came to LA for $$$ and celebrity. Spicegal just came for celebrity. Sure they maybe decent people in person, but both have done nothing for the LA area they came... just to take from the area... - betwokey, on 11/05/2009, -1/+0It will be his good decision.he played very good in Milan.WONDERFUL
jasel_queen@yahoo.com - AkshayPurandare, on 11/17/2009, -1/+0Good move. AC Milan is a great club and he's definitely needed there. However, with Lennon, Walcott and Milner all in the fray, it's going to be difficult. The only thing that works in his favor is experience, and Capello will surely look at that. I hope he does make it to the World Cup...he's a legend and deserves to go out on the biggest stage.
- dalittle, on 11/04/2009, -9/+5actually, beckham's only talent is to bend the ball. He does not really have any other tools to use.
- kirbs2001, on 11/04/2009, -7/+2who cares
- taibo, on 11/04/2009, -12/+6Whoa, people actually care about MLS? Who knew.
- FritoPendejo, on 11/04/2009, -7/+1Read: I am elite.
- ImageOfFear, on 11/04/2009, -16/+3Who?
