- maximilen, on 02/06/2009, -1/+63Beckham: "To be given the chance again to play at this level at my age is pretty incredible and I've enjoyed it so much I would like to continue it. I think people have seen the way I've been since playing at this level again."
In other words, the MLS blows, and he's bored out of his mind here. - domfosnz, on 02/06/2009, -3/+50I'd rather live in Milan than LA
- Danltn, on 02/06/2009, -0/+28Just remember Milan is a TOP club, and Beckham, despite his age is playing extremely well for them.
I really do hope he stays. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+23Can anyone really say they're surprised? Once the novelty value had worn off and the Beckham roadshow had done a few circuits around the US, he was always going to reflect and think about his career. I personally hope he does stay at Milan longer. I'd like to see him at the next World Cup as I still think he has a lot to offer at the very highest level.

I don't think he will leave. - surfsquish, on 02/06/2009, -0/+17Let's be honest with ourselves. Playing Soccer in the US is like playing American football in Europe.
- walgman, on 02/06/2009, -1/+17Agree with all the above plus it will make him more available for national duty. Who can blame him for wanting to play proper football again.
- richehh, on 02/06/2009, -0/+16There's much more paparazzi surrounding Beckham in Europe.
- forknife, on 02/06/2009, -0/+16paparazzi is an Italian word you know...
- TwwIX, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12Your favorite team yet you can't even spell it.
- MOJIRA, on 02/06/2009, -2/+13Having never lived in either I can't make that call; but I can confidently say I'd rather play for AC Milan than the LA Galaxy.
- yacinebouatrous, on 02/06/2009, -1/+12They made him an offer he couldn't refuse
- duniyadnd, on 02/06/2009, -0/+11Beckham is only a good player on a really good team. On a regular team, he would be a non-factor most of the time. This isn't basketball where one player can change the entire team, there are still 10 other players on a huge field. I can only think of two players who did that (and retired), Roberto Baggio (Bologna) and Maradona (Napoli).
-edit- just realized I clicked on the wrong Reply, was supposed to go to the root of the thread. Oh well. - damack, on 02/06/2009, -1/+10I wouldnt say MLS necessarily blows but AC Milan are one of the best teams in the world and living in Italy with its fancy designer wear and fancy cars seems just up VIctoria Beckhams street, it's a no brainer in some ways.
- Fullvinyl, on 02/06/2009, -0/+7No, that would be Landon Donovan.
- libertao, on 02/06/2009, -2/+9Princess Diana didn't die in L.A.
- MOJIRA, on 02/06/2009, -0/+6The whole notion that Beckham would have gotten Americans interested in soccer was doomed to fail. We Americans need our own Beckham to be proud of; a male Mia Hamm, except less masculine.
- forknife, on 02/06/2009, -2/+8good riddance, the MLS needs homegrown talent, or at least a few franchise players to develop within a club who also stay in order to really make it over time. It was stupid to think we could get round up a few has been English and European players, pay them way too much, and everything would get bigger and better.
Beckham is a good player only when he's surrounded by great players.
Landon Donovan is good, but compared to Pato, Kaka and Ronaldinho...
The Galaxy lost their manager after last season, who was a very well regarded Player/Manager previously to his position in L.A. this means they immediately lost some prestige, and people are quite reasonably going to start evacuating.
Also, outside of Beckham MLS doesn't pay it's players well enough to attract big names who may not "only care about money" but if the difference is between being relatively poor and living comfortably they'll take it. Can anyone think of any other major american professional sport where the best players on a team will honestly leave to play in Norway or Romania?
TL;DR
MLS blows because it could easily be good enough to keep an "average" player like Beckham.. - TigerStar337, on 02/06/2009, -1/+7When DB played in the USA, he was a slacker. Good Luck in Milan.
- Rudegar, on 02/06/2009, -0/+6where many are turn based :)
- croydon196, on 02/06/2009, -0/+5This kind of thing happens all the time in football in Europe, especially in the UK. US is no different - lump it!
- SamSlater, on 02/06/2009, -0/+5Why the complaints from the Americans? He's done his job, I feel.
Ask someone in England, France, Germany, Japan, China or Australia who LA Galaxy were before Beckham's arrival in the States compared to now. You just can't get world-wide advertising like that on the cheap.
Beckham was given charge of organising Galaxy's attack last season and they finished it with more goals scored than any other team in the division. It's not his fault that they also conceded the most!
Oh, and whoever called Beckham a slacker? LOL. Ok, he's not a Zizu or Ronaldo but just ask one of the most successful coaches in the last 15 years - Fabio Capello - if Beckham's a slacker. Ask the Real Madrid fans if he ever gave less than 100%, even after signing a multi-million dollar contract at the Galaxy and was being left out of Real's team. Ask the Man Utd fans what his attitude was like over the 10 years he was playing there. - Eastlygod, on 02/06/2009, -1/+5You seem to be forgetting he played in Madrid, that famous English speaking city. It's somewhere in Dorset, is it?
- Physicsmazz, on 02/06/2009, -0/+4Goodbye
- mizike, on 02/06/2009, -1/+5You're telling me soccer is more boring to watch than baseball or golf? The real problems are that a) American's only love spectacle (ie., home runs, slam dunks, fiery nascar crashes) and b) no advertisers will touch soccer as it's hard to work in commercial breaks every 5 minutes.
- davidfc, on 02/06/2009, -0/+4Beckham's got a few more years left in him, and any football player will choose to end their career in Italy's Serie A than in the US MLS. Beckham's used to playing with and against high caliber teams and players, which is no wonder why feels so at home with Milan.
- yxpxu5756, on 02/06/2009, -2/+6As a football player, Milan is better for him.
- acid_jazz, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Have you played for both?
- scarwars, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3actually we hate his wife more..
- ccordero, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3No, it think it really blows...
- kingman26, on 02/06/2009, -2/+5I used to think that Beckham was a prima donna. My hat's off to him. Good luck. The States aren't that into soccer anyway. We have our own sports.
- Number23, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3The latest in a long series of ever more expensive attempts to get Americans to watch soccer fail.
- inactive, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Theo Walcott is still potential. Yes he can be devastating when he gets it right (as we saw in Croatia) but its all too rare and his end product needs vast improvement. Sometimes he looks world class but at other times he makes horrendous decisions and looks average. At the moment, I'd see Wright-Phillips as in front of him anyway, not even taking Beckham into account.
- croydon196, on 02/06/2009, -0/+3Yes - The US is the only place in the World that have newspapers and photographers - next
- Kelmon, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2The choice is very simple. If he wants to play football then he goes to play for AC Milan. If he wants to go make money then he stays with LA Galaxy. I hope that he chooses football.
- mamboboy, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Jesus!
You do know flair isn't everything, right? Having an amazing attacking midfield and strikers is good, but what happens when the defence is pure dog *****? Why the hell do you think that match was 6 - 2?
Manchester United haven't conceded ONE SINGLE GOAL at home in the EPL since November 08. Van Der Sar has gone 1,025 minutes and counting without letting a goal past him.
And who gives a ***** if LA Galaxy are bottom of the MLS - everyone knows they (along with every other MLS team) are utter crap. It was a bad idea to go there any ways seeing as they (especially the mexicans) do not know how to tackle, and i'm suprised Beckhams career wasn't ended there by injury.
Another example is Wigan's Amir Zaki. The guy is built like a tank and just ploughs through defences. None of this 'holding the ball on your neck', or 'rolling over with the ball between your legs', because they don't do it in matches anyways - so whats the point?!.
So tell me...If South Americans play the best football, then how come all their good players come to Europe? - MOJIRA, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2mizike is absolutely right. Take a look at American football, it's all about star players, big names, product placement, commercial advertising, and theater. It's like professional wrestling almost.
Soccer would be huge in America if we were any good at it, and we'd be good at it, if more people were interested in playing it. So it's an unfortunate paradox. - steenmachine, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Beckham's gotten 2 goals, multiple assists and has shown a lot of professionalism on the pitch for Milan.. As a Milan supporter, I was hesitant at first with the whole loan situation, but now I honestly think that he could be an asset to Milan in the long run
- S1KING, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Dugg up for Dorset.
- Po0py, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2He may not be as fast as he used to be but he always has an impact on the game for England. And it usualy comes from his free kicks. He's always setting up goals. That is an invaluable thing to have on the pitch.
Also, with respect, I don't think MLS soccer fans or American sports fans in general can understand fully what it is to represent your country in the World Cup. It is the biggest honour. Every European professional footballer will do anything for their national team. I suspect the biggest American equivelant would be to play in the Superbowl. It's still completly different, though. And for an Englishman, there is a tonne of history involving England and the World Cup. It is a constant heartache to English soccer fans that it has taken more than fifty years and counting for England to win the World Cup again. There has been so many close calls and missed opportunities.
Can you blame Beckham for wanting one more shot at it? - Fullvinyl, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Dugg up for Theo Walcott.
- steenmachine, on 02/06/2009, -1/+3you realize that he lived and played in Madrid before he started playing with the Galaxy, right?
- Kelmon, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2Surely it is possible to play Walcott and Beckham together in the same team since they are totally different players. Bentley is a potential replacement for Beckham (well, he was until his form went to hell) and Lennon is a replacement for Walcott.
- darkz77, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2AC Milan won 17 league titles which is second best in Italian soccer history.
so......stfu - Elohir, on 02/06/2009, -1/+3Has been? Average?
Beckham has excelled at Man Utd, Real Madrid and now AC Milan and a lot of that was well after the 'peak' age for his position. I wouldn't consider him for the World XI but his cross, distribution, dead ball and industry have held him in the highest regard for a decade for a reason.
So I'm sorry but to say Beckham is anything approaching a 'has been' or an 'average' player just screams of ignorance. - blokeski, on 02/06/2009, -3/+5Errr... Britain is in Europe.
- DubSnipe, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2'Soccer'... ugh.
- loconet, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2I hope he does well. It seems he still has the technical ability to succeed at this level.
If he wins the league with Milan, he would become the first player to ever win the top three European leagues (Premership, La Liga, Serie A) - tamborinfinito, on 02/06/2009, -0/+2MLS doesn't blow. It hasn't reached the levels of a European league, especially the Italian Serie A. He didn't expect to be such a hit in Milan. Its a career no-brainer to stay. LA will get a nice chunk of money for him.
FYI, Baggio played Fiorentina, Juventus, AC Milan, Bologna before Inter Milan, then he joined Brescia where he later retired. Il Divino Codino. one of the best in the world! - Electric_Sheep, on 02/06/2009, -1/+3He speaks Spanish fluently because of his time at Real Madrid. What makes you think he won't learn Italian also?
