- MrRoberts11, on 07/20/2009, -0/+34Vancouver just got an MLS team and we are really excited. I think MLS is doing it's best to recreate the international appeal of soccer in North America, and rowdy fans is a great aspect. I'm happy the fans are reacting because it all comes from emotion which is a GREAT sign.
- mass922, on 07/20/2009, -1/+29This is why we can't have nice things.
- skyjis6, on 07/20/2009, -1/+24A lot more Americans "get 'football'" than you think. You act like English fans didn't condemn Michael Owen for doing his job! A lot of MLS fans are very passionate about football and I think that's a good thing.
- villainousT, on 07/20/2009, -5/+26If he was going to whine about playing with galaxy then he shouldn't have signed on the dotted line. He knew that level of play doesn't compare to some of the leagues in Europe.
- aechase, on 07/20/2009, -0/+20Eric Cantona knows how to deal with mouthy fans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovYWY4Pf9_M
- ShingoEX, on 07/20/2009, -2/+17"At halftime, Beckham walked toward the L.A. Riot Squad section and motioned to a fan to come closer. A man jumped down from the seats and was subdued by security before being taken away."
This is pretty low. It's like inviting someone to your house, then sicking the cops on him for trespassing. - AnthonyC, on 07/20/2009, -0/+12The MLS should have sold him to Milan, avoided all the negative pub, and got some cash in return. He's going to walk in a couple months anyway. The longer this drags out the less likely another superstar is going to go to the US to play.
- teamr, on 07/20/2009, -0/+10And pass on all that money? He might be a crybaby, but he aint stupid. He got his big contract, and now he's on loan to AC Milan. Looks like Beckham came out on top to me. Maybe MLS teams should think twice before trying to sign big fish into a little pond
- bobburn1, on 07/20/2009, -1/+11Seen the video? I Guarantee he wasn't telling him to "calm down" or shake his hand. It was more like bating him to come down for a fight (of course, Beckham being the big "star" he is, knew a fight would never happen with all of the security and just wanted to feel like a "big man.")
- darkz77, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9If the fans want to blame someone then blame the galaxy management.
- windsorlad111, on 07/20/2009, -0/+9QFT.
Any doubters should go to a Toronto FC game. Then decide if North American's don't 'get football'. - scoot2006, on 07/20/2009, -1/+9Orly?
Average attendance of a MiLB game (2009): 3,986 [1]
Average attendance of a MLS game (2009): 15,490 [2]

[2] http://www.mls-daily.com/2009/04/2009-mls-attendan ... - bizzywho, on 07/20/2009, -3/+11I read the title as: "Beckham confronts fan and returns home with the Galaxy"
A little MIB reference... - mass922, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7So you're essentially agreeing with the fans, here, bud.
The reason the Galaxy's main supporters group was furious is exactly what you just said...
The Galaxy owners brought in Beckham, made lots of quick-cash on jerseys, and he essentially took the money and ran.
Regardless of if "he wants" to be there, the ***** signed his contract and if he really wants to play in WC2010 better play his heart out in the MLS until he's somewhere else...
That being said, I hope one of our defenders breaks his ***** legs in the World Cup if he does make it (and this is coming from someone who liked his play at United) - smacksaw, on 07/20/2009, -1/+8"Shake hands"...is that some sort of English slang for "punch him in the teeth" or something?
- mass922, on 07/20/2009, -0/+7He also jumped over one of the advertising walls in an attempt to approach the fans.
- OafBoaster, on 07/20/2009, -2/+8Give it a rest with this. My family's English and my great uncle played keeper for their World Cup team before the war broke out. There's nothing inherently complex about Soccer that Americans aren't getting. American football is a culture, just like English football is. Baseball is our national pastime. All of these games have a lot of tradition and that just don't translate to other geographic regions that haven't grown up around them. Saying we don't "get" soccer is like saying we don't get beans on toast. Sure, we understand it. Most of us just don't really want anything to do with it for breakfast. We like our cereals and waffles.
- MaxMWood, on 07/20/2009, -3/+9"I said, 'You need to calm down and come shake my hand,' and he jumped over."
That's pretty cool of Beckham, I would have been pretty pissed off. - RealmDown, on 07/20/2009, -3/+9You have been awarded +1 troll points and have made it to LEVEL 2 !
Congratulations, Associate Troll ! - Threlly1, on 07/20/2009, -3/+9...and then he assists in both goals scored by L.A.G.
Even Brandon Donovan himself stated that NOBODY else in the League can do what Beckham does.
Lets do the simple math, how much bigger is Soccers profile in the U.S. since he arrived ?
How much more money and talented youngsters have flooded into the game ?
Ahhh, NOW you get it. - Supernova36, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6And then he assisted in both Galaxy's goals, showing who needs who more.
- stubear, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5I hate "football" but I'll digg you down anyway because you're a douche bag.
- mass922, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6Why the QFT?
He's absoultely right.
I've seen it slowly grow in Dallas (big FC Dallas fan, here) and the rowdy fans are great to have.
My roommate is Canadian and goes to the TFC games at BMO field when he's back visiting, and he says it is mind-blowing.
Each team has pockets of die-hards but it isn't unless you watch TFC or (from what I saw the other day on ESPN) Seattle Sounders that you have entire stadiums chanting in unison.
But the Beckham thing, I don't blame LA's "Riot Squad" for doing what they did... the basard essentially took their money and ran... and bad-mouthed North America while doing it. - djpray2k, on 07/20/2009, -0/+5He and his misses should have known that the MLS is behind MLB, NBA, NFL and even WWE. Take in to account the following those sports get in the college leagues and the MLS barely registers, doing little for this 'brand Beckham' crap.
He did great at Milan but should have been man enough to say you know what, I signed a contract and now the break is over I'm going back to LA and not cried like a baby about it. - urbanguerilla, on 07/20/2009, -1/+6Galaxy knew fine well beckham was only going there for the LA lifestyle and to enhance brand beckham in the US. Let's face it, America will never fully take football on the way the europeans and the south americans have, they look at it the same way we brits look at baseball, which is a shame because America could have an amazing league if people really got into the sport. their national team is pretty damn good and that's with the vast majority of people not giving a rats ass about the sport. Just imagine if they actually cared.
- m3arvk, on 07/20/2009, -1/+5The fact is that he _did_ commit to the LAG and he has consistently put his WC aspirations above his team. No wonder fans don't like him. He's backhandedly insulting the league and can't even be bothered to play in it. Listen, if you agree to play for a team you should play for it. If you want to try your luck with AC Milan a couple years down the road, go for it. As for now, park your ass firmly in LA and put in the work you agreed to do. End of story.
- bobburn1, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Because he's a declining footballer with a diva's attitude.
- bobburn1, on 07/20/2009, -2/+6He's a footballer in swift decline.
- thedivinelyevil, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4Beckham actually reduced his salary in Milan while they negotiated his desire to stay in Milan. He was earning 17 million POUNDS a year not including additional millions in endorsements while at Real Madrid itself. Money can't have been the biggest factor for him. He doesn't even need to play soccer to make millions.
- teamr, on 07/20/2009, -1/+5America does NOT have the best youth soccer program in the world. Not even close. But I agree that America's top athletes go to other sports. Just don't believe that playing soccer won't get you laid and paid. The richest clubs and the biggest contracts in the sporting world belong to european football. Ask c.ronaldo...or Beckham!
- PhantomRogue, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4You do realize that he TRIED to go back to AC Milan (yes, not the Premiership, but still a European league) and they didn't want to pay the transfer Fee.
So blame your own teams for not stepping up and paying the fee. If you think hes that good, then those teams would have no problem paying the transfer fee. He tried to go hollywood, but realized that if you are going to be earning 255 Mil through sponsorships and extra cirriculars, you better show up on the field and prove to the people you are trying to sell merchandise to, that you are worth it. - teamr, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4video:
http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/2009/07/20/ ... - mass922, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4You're an idiot.
IIRC Last year FC Dallas had a higher opening attendance than the Texas Rangers.
...and this is coming from someone who is a huge Rangers fan.
It is seriously about on the same par as baseball in terms of average attendance (this is skewed though because there are many fewer soccer games compared to baseball) - ricorurik, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4You need to work on your reading and comprehension skills.
- redfan, on 07/20/2009, -0/+4That's funny considering the treatment Beckham got from English fans who "get" football in 1998. Far worse than anything he's gotten from LA fans.
- m3arvk, on 07/20/2009, -1/+5There's no question who needs who more. The question is why isn't he playing for the team he signed for?
- amcnair, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4Brandon?
- jiggawatt, on 07/20/2009, -1/+4put two people in a room with a basic understanding of english, who've never seen or heard of either sport, and ask them which one they'd call "football" and I'm pretty sure you can guess which one they'd pick...
...not the one with the funny shaped "ball". - skuk, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3He is a business asset. He gets people on seats. Get the club talked about. And can be sub let out to another club if galaxy choose to, which they did.
- ShingoEX, on 07/20/2009, -2/+5Soccer is the most popular sport for the rest of the world. Guess we're behind the times.
- thinboyslim, on 07/20/2009, -3/+6"get" football was a bit of a generalisation, "enjoy" football is probably more accurate.
- m3arvk, on 07/20/2009, -0/+3Listen, you signed on to play so play. The Galaxy have been more than understanding and now it's time to be a man and play. If Becks is hell-bent on playing in Europe then let a club pay the not insubstantial transfer fee plus the lost revenue from merchandising. Otherwise lace up your boots and stop giving yourself a bad name.
- ramacosta, on 07/20/2009, -0/+2It was bait, as soon as the fan shook his hand BAM!!! with a left hook.
- prolikewhoa, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4'You need to calm down and come shake my hand'
Isn't that what Ron Artest said a few years ago in Detroit? - ThatBuffalo, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3the more support the world shows for American soccer, then its influence can increase and it can slowly become a major part of the culture in America. 2 things i want to happen before i die:
1) America wins the world cup at least once
2) more fans for soccer than football in america - Skaistrendy, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3Bigots make me laugh..
- darkz77, on 07/20/2009, -5/+7technically "real" football is soccer.
- bobburn1, on 07/20/2009, -3/+5BS. Beckham was probably trash talking to the fan as well. Beckham has no damn class, getting into it with fans. Come on Becky, you know as a star that you'll be heckled.
- method7670, on 07/20/2009, -2/+4I wish beckham didn't take himself so seriously and took soccer THAT seriously, take a page from landon donovon.
- m3arvk, on 07/20/2009, -1/+3Blah blah blah. Listen, he signed with LAG to play and he hasn't played. End of *****' story. He needs to play or be a man and apologize for being a deceiver.
