- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -14/+104In other news, no one in America gives a *****. America wants David Beckham about as much as France wants Dale Earnhard Jr.
- frantzmail, on 02/16/2009, -5/+66Who will be glad to go back playing for the MLS after playing for the AC Milan ? That league is a joke.
- Trekhawk, on 02/16/2009, -10/+58And America said "meh."
- vestlandsfanden, on 02/16/2009, -0/+30AC Milan = *****
+ playing with Kaka, Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Flamini, Maldini + + +
LA Galaxy = **
+ playing on american football fields...
you kind of get why he is reluctant, but if you sign a contract you should honor it. - EyewitBass, on 02/16/2009, -5/+32Big surprise here. Let's see go where he is appreciated or stay in this country where no one really gives a crap about soccer? hmmm tough one
- daridave, on 02/16/2009, -2/+27The big fat check wasn't a joke, though. Truth is Beckham is a dick that signed with the Galaxy just for the money and fame. Then he went in Italy, played there with the top players in the world, remembered that it's about FUN and not money, and now wants to stay there. F*ck him and let him be stuck in the "cheap" league now -- it seemed like an easy decision for him when he saw the numbers back then, so it serves him right! Professionals make me sick sometime... this is a pure example of it.
- frofisrael, on 02/16/2009, -7/+31His talent is wasted at Galaxy. They should give him up. Why should an excellent player like Beckham sink into anonymity with Galaxy. He belongs up there with the greats.
- imalex, on 02/16/2009, -1/+21As an American, I think I've watched Beckham play more for AC Milan and other foreign clubs than I have when he was on the Galaxy. Truthfully, besides the occasional MLS Cup game, I never watch the MLS. Being able to watch games like Manchester vs. Derby and Inter vs AC Milan yesterday, MLS pales in comparison. I'd gladly see Beckham stay at AC Milan. If football (soccer) is going to catch on in the US, channels provided in basic cable need to start airing more big games. Sadly, I can't see any non-soccer fan getting hooked after watching an MLS season game, or paying a monthly fee for a channel like Fox Soccer Channel to watch a sport they aren't interested in.
- Lou3000, on 02/16/2009, -1/+16MLS is a great for US Soccer. It may not reach Premier League or Serie A status, but it can hang with the European sub leagues (yes it would dominate Eircom). However, the big impact of MLS is being a spring board for US players that would not normally get a look in Europe. Every time a US Player is brought up through the MLS ranks and makes it to a Premier league team, US Soccer gets a boost.
And look at some of the US v. Premier exhibition games. It isn't like it is 10-0 out there. - kgoule, on 02/16/2009, -2/+15dugg for football news on digg front page
- stilesja, on 02/16/2009, -1/+14Awesome analogy!
- lucasftw, on 02/16/2009, -0/+11As an American, and a soccer player/fan, it frustrates me greatly that the MLS gets ***** on so much. There are lots of other leagues in the world that are not nearly as competitive as the European leagues (K-League anyone?), but I guess since they don't have other sports leagues to make them look small and insignificant they get a pass. People seem to forget that the MLS is an extremely young league, it's only been around for about fifteen years.
- balliamo, on 02/16/2009, -14/+24True, but the game is called football, not soccer.
- macannrb01, on 02/16/2009, -1/+11it was stupid to let him go to one of the biggest teams in the world, and then expect him to be happy to come back
- Nayson, on 02/16/2009, -2/+11Unlikely sir. The MLS might make the jump from third rate to second rate, but it will never catch up to the likes of the English, Spanish and Italian leagues.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -3/+12Just don't come to the US calling it football :-P
- mlavergn, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Why should an excellent player like Beckham sink into anonymity with Galaxy?
That's easy ... Money ... the capital M is intentional. That said, maybe he's now realized that he loves the game more than the money and sees what a mistake he made. - Dou6, on 02/16/2009, -1/+9IMO, the reason Soccer is not popular in the U.S. is that we simply don't get to see GOOD soccer played on a regular basis. The only time I have ever seen good Soccer is when the world cup comes around, or else when I go to a local greek restaraunt where the guy always has on european league soccer on dish or directv or whatever, which I am sure is part of some costly package 99% of American born people will never buy.
I am not a soccer guy at all, I played soccer in school, but still don't really know that much about the game, admittedly. I prefer hockey, which is another sport most American's don't "get", but is still way more popular than Soccer.
All that said, I can see that Soccer IS exciting, and fun, and a sport Americans COULD enjoy, the problem is, they just never see the good stuff. It's like someone saying they don't like steak because all they have ever eaten is steak from IHOP. Take em to a 5 star steakhouse and they will probably change their mind.
All I know is that lots of people who never say a word about soccer were talking about it, and getting together for games during the world cup...which means there IS a market for it, we just need to start seeing better games. I think the answer is to start bringing English/Spanish league stuff here, throw it on on sunday afternoon competing with, or just before or after NBA games, and see what happens. - JasonCox, on 02/16/2009, -3/+11While I'm personally not a soccer/football fan, I think Beckham should be required to honor his contract. He knew what he was getting into when he signed on and it's not like it's a huge state secret that the US isn't that big on soccer/football and that he would have been better off staying in Europe.
This is almost like one of the best players in American Football signing on to one of the European leagues, knowing that American Football isn't popular over there, and then bitching about wanting to go play for some other major team in the NFL. - ucuntu, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Eh?
Sounds like you have a lack of understanding about sports. I care about Rugby, Football, Hockey and Soccer. Just because a game can finish 0-0, it doesn't mean that it wasn't an exciting game. Also, rugby and football allow less time for recovery between each phase of play, and in Rugby especially, the fat lads tend to have loads of stamina because they need to be near the ball at all times ready to push players away from them. Then when you're defending in rugby, you don't bring on an entirely different set of players, a lot of the time, the 15 men running onto the field stay on there for the duration.
Although I understand that the way Football is, if you take away the unlimited replacements, it will end up a very boring game. - nuance2k5, on 02/16/2009, -1/+8Did you say 'Baseball'????? ;)
- Threlly1, on 02/16/2009, -7/+14For those diggers banging on about a soccer story on the front page of digg, the day you take all those stupid stories about U.S football off the front page (or gay rugby as we call it) we'll agree.
NOBODY in the rest of the entire world gives a toss about American football.
Take the girly body armour off like the real men and we'll talk about it. - MrChunks, on 02/16/2009, -1/+8Don't start that ***** again.
- Skellbasher, on 02/16/2009, -3/+10Beckham signed a contract, end of story.
If he wants out of it, I'm sure there's a buyout clause he can exercise. Follow the terms of your contract and play, or buy yourself out.
Aside from that STFU. - VanillaBabies, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7Refresh my memory, which part of Britain is Milan in again?
- AmandaQ, on 02/16/2009, -8/+15What's with all the soccer hate? Soccer is a freaking awesome game...and let me just say, I can barely stand to watch any sport on TV--but I will make time to watch Soccer.
Super hot guys + Lots of running around = GOOD TELEVISION. - AmandaQ, on 02/16/2009, -4/+11Ahh, I see I've been dugg down by some fat, lazy bastard who can barely peel his ass off the computer chair to take a piss--much less run the length of a soccer field.
- haentz, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6>but if you sign a contract you should honor it.
For example by paying the release fee that pretty sure is part of the contract... - bald1, on 02/16/2009, -1/+7Shopping in Milan > shopping in LA...this is all the Beckhams need to decide on where David plays his footie, surely?
- Namakemono, on 02/16/2009, -0/+6Mexico is part of North America...
- Grazzit, on 02/16/2009, -2/+7WNBA =P
- amitlimaye, on 02/16/2009, -4/+9Really u think baseball is exciting for heavens sake the player are fat at times [:)]
Even cricket players seem to be in better shape - Dajestar, on 02/16/2009, -2/+7I agree, the only reason you would want to go to the MLS is if you are close to retirement and want to play for a couple of more years. It's about the same level as the first/second division leage in most small European countries.
- rhysboy84, on 02/16/2009, -2/+7What has been - lack of a better word - "The Beckham Effect" in the states? Galaxy improved? Attendances improved? More people watching football?
Also, doesn't he own a share of LA Galaxy as well?
I'd like to see him stay at Milan, especially if he plays in the champions league next year, and especially if he scores against Man U, that knocks them out :) - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+5And we are reluctant for him to return.
- MrChunks, on 02/16/2009, -1/+5Baseball. It's quite literally a thrill... an hour?
Call it the "thinking man's sport" all you will. It's ***** boring. Although whether cricket is more or less boring is still up for debate. They're both on a par, if you ask me. - gpageau, on 02/16/2009, -3/+7That's because most of our "real" athletes play basketball, football and baseball. If we had athletes of the calibre of Lebron James or Dwight Howard making soccer -- as we call it here -- their first choice, it would be a different story. In Europe, the best athletes play "football." In North America, soccer is far down the list.
- leeman123, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4The 2005 Champions league final between Liverpool and AC Milan. Liverpool trailed 3-0 at half time, before coming back in the second half to win it. Incredible game of football. Comebacks like this are not as rare as you might think. Last week in the premiership, Liverpool trailed portsmouth 1-0, then 2-1 before 2 goals within the dying minutes of the game won it for Liverpool.
It can however be frustrating when weaker sides in a league put all their focus on defence and hold out for a goalless draw, leading to a dull game. The difficulty of breaking down a defence however does makes it all the better when your team do score. - cran, on 02/16/2009, -1/+5This is true.
- EyewitBass, on 02/16/2009, -2/+6yes everywhere else it is called football but not in this country
- EnderMB, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Milan are playing a shrewd game here.
Beckham is a decent player and one of the best in his positions. However, Milan have no shortages of players that can take his position and they have no need for Beckham as a player. The only reason he's played so often is because he's a marketing goldmine. Milan want to give him the illusion of top-tier football again so he'll sign and line their pockets in a season they've already lost. AC Milan know that Mourinho will take Inter to the top for as long as he is manager there and they want to make enough money to make a genuine push for silverware.
As for Beckham, it didn't take him long to give up on his 'ambition' to turn MLS into a competitive league, to set up academies for children and to further the game to a country that cannot keep its attention for 90 minutes in a sport it has no chance of being successful at. He signed a contract and he should stop being such a hypocrite and honour it. He'll be out at the end of the season and I think he should end his career in America. He's getting old now and a year of top-tier football isn't genuinely worth a couple of seasons as captain of a team that looks up to your every word.
All those that say he has failed need only look at the attendance for games in the MLS. They've on the rise and are continuing to rise. At this rate Football will be a competitive sport in America in the next 10 years and given another stint at hosting a world cup I can see America taking a shine to the sport that the rest of the world plays. Sure, no one cares now, but just wait...they will in the future. - Meep3D, on 02/16/2009, -4/+8So the game where you kick the ball, and handling is a foul is called 'Soccer', and the game where you carry it and run with it as it's shaped so you can't pass/dribble/kick it is called 'Football'.
Yes, that makes perfect sense! - Jedimonkey27, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4@ EarlOfLade Yeah, 'cause it's so communist to stop every few minutes for a COMMERCIAL break. Idiot.
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Exactly, it is not like (American) Football where one team can come back with an upset touchdown with only a minute left on the clock.
- EnderMB, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3I do agree, but you only have to look at the FA Cup to see that size doesn't necessarily affect results. I remember teams like Yeovil causing problems for Liverpool. MLS teams aren't great, but they can play along with the big boys.
- zuiquan, on 02/16/2009, -2/+5I've got two thoughts on this:
1. He's a whiny dick for not honoring his contract.
2. He plays on a ***** team (LA Galaxy) where his talent is so far above and beyond his teammates that watching them play together is hilarious. He lobs in amazing passes to the box and his teammates watch them drop without getting quality touches because their skill level is so low. I watched him play in Columbus and felt actual pity for him as his team was so awful while he was trying so hard and making brilliant plays. And then he got to take a beer and soda shower from some douche fans after the match which was uncalled for. Landon Donovan is about as good a soccer player as I am and while I'm pretty good I don't think I should be playing professional soccer in any league. That's the go to guy on the Galaxy. Lame. Who the ***** in their right mind would want to keep playing on a ***** team that can't put away any of your beautiful setups? - neilyn, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4All the douche-bags that went out and bought Beckham Galaxy jerseys need him so that they don't look (as) retarted.
- ucuntu, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Good points, except I think the decision to join LA was his wife's and their agent/publicists. Not his.
Although remember when he signed with LA, he had just been dropped out of the first team by Fabio Capello and wasn't playing good football. Somehow at AC Milan he is going through something of a renaissance and is playing some of the best football of his career. - stilesja, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4Really? Because I was kind of under the impression you could walk away from a soccer game for like 20 minutes, come back and the score is still 0-0 and all the dudes are still running around chasing after the ball...
Seems like you could just run ads 99% of the game and when something good was about to happen just break in. - lucasftw, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3i wish i could digg your comment twice.
