- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Wow this is a propaganda scare tactic article. We will never be secure from everything that can be thrown at us. There is always a way to attack no matter what we think we have locked down.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21more fearmongering propaganda. This is digg.com, not fox news. The one with the shotgun is damn cool though, I have to admit.
- earache, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Yawn, more fear mongering.
- breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Thank God we have the color coded threat level chart keeping us safe!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11we're also completely vulnerable to a flying elephant strapped with c4 explosives, with a little monkey sitting on it that randomally throws and detonates grenades.
Give me a break, the article is just fear mongering - they want you to feel perpetually scared so that they can milk those alert colour warnings - ooh no there's a flying elephant at my door, better raise up the defcon warning! - silenceHR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11so..... to make america safe, you guys need drunk rednecks with shotguns on every corner? cause, i just dont see how will drunk redneck from Montana shoot this birdy over DC, unless you have one on each corner.
- radu79, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11If by "bomb anything" you mean making them explode at random times/positions, then sure, that can be done without a siginificative effort.
But doing so would be a terrible waste of resources.
The Japanese army did it during WW2, when they sent baloons with explosive/timmers in the US.
They've sent a 9 K of them, and they've maneged to kill 6 people or something.
Google for "japanese balloon bombs" for more info. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12If conventional warfare could defeat terrorism, then Israel would be the safest nation on earth. What's needed is a policy of NOT pissing on everyone and flushing the goodwill of the rest of the world down the toilet. We need to get rid of this gaggle of detached theorists who have their own private view of how the world works that are running the nation. Diplomacy first ,and war as a last resort.
- 7of7, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I know drunk rednecks who go hunting for birds of all types and if a drunken redneck can pick off a suddenly flying Grouse with a shotgun, I'm pretty sure a soldier wouldn't have any trouble picking one of these things off with a shotgun.
- xaxa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10How are they 'suicide bombers'? AAUI, there's no pilot in the thing to die, so no suicide.
- jakeweston, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Given that humans are relatively fragile things and there are an almost infinite number of ways to kill or maim them, maybe the US could best protect its people by thinking a bit more about the causes of their enemies' hatred as well as the symptoms...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Okay time to ban all civilian radio capability.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9OMFG, the terrorists might build a death star, or they'll use evil weather control devices, or they'll blah blah ***** blah. All these terrorism experts sure love their Jihad RPG, do they not? The usual cowboys and terrorist game they seem to enjoy these days. How cute, now STFU, it's very annoying.
- TopherT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Oh no! Radio controlled toy airplanes! Instead of worrying about this kind of stupid ***** maybe we should be shelling out some mullah to Russia to secure their Nuclear missiles, a program is in place but its getting about 1/100 of the funding it needs.
- jawdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What do you mean they can't manufacture glass? Are you under the impression that they don't have windows? Or do you mean a goat herder can't manufacture glass himself?....In that case....can YOU manufacture glass? I guess i shouldn't be so angry at your comment, without knowing what country you are specifiying. Do you mean the country "Terroristville" that is made up completely with terrorists?
- quamb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Agreed. 100% fearmongering.
Cheap, easy and it works suicide bombers - vs - expensive, elaborate and risky contraptions.
This is not james bond. War and terrorism is dirty and brutal. - sixister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6KILLER BEES. OMG. They're spreading killer bees! And SARS! They're going to cause a tsunami! Nooooooooooo!!! Mad cow diseaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaase.
You all are a bunch of sissies. - Vesty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9cause you know, we got snipers on every roof top in every city 24/7 just incase
- scottybowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Great, another scare tactic to keep the public in fear of the terrorists. Unless the government is trying to scare the public into submission they're not happy. Bird flu, 45 minutes away from a missile strike from Saddam, the terrorist warning system (it looks like this pointless system is going to be implemented in the UK next, how does being told that the terrorist threat level is at "amber" going to make any difference to my day to day life)
Quite frankly, I'm sick of hearing about potential ways that I could die every day in the news. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6experts have been carefully reviewing old episodes of Batman: The Animated Series, I see
- pjh3000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Hmmm... snippers stationed on the roof of every building, or the US could just change its foreign policy and stop pissing everyone off!
- scheper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually, some teacher from New Zealand is making a cruise missile from shop parts just to prove that it could be done.
http://www.interestingprojects.com/cruisemissile/diary.shtml - chichichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hay Look Over There ...
FEAR FEAR FEAR ...
Are you afraid enough yet to allow more rights to be eroded? - James_Aguilar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I get the sense that we are not really going to be able to defend against much, no matter how paranoid we become. In some senses, it's easier just to let go of your need for control . . .
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Digg made me feel like I wasn't on an American website for so long but finally it caught up with the times and gave me my nice dose of American fear. MMM mmm Tasty
- scbysnx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3James Aguilar hit the hail on the nead. There are just to many ways to sneak stuff in to defend ourselves against everything.
- spume, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ever play GTA: San Andreas?
you need a goddamn mini gun to take those down. - scheper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually, when Germany trained pigeons to drop bombs above England, England trained hawks to catch and kill pigeons, which worked a treat.
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3does it really matter?
- everfalling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i want a paintball armed remote controlled helicopter. that's be sweet...
and, yeah, it can't say much for our military if we get thwarted by a toy strapped with some explosives. might as well put some C-4 on a radioshack RC - dougmc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 `I hate reports like these.'
Probably not as much as I do. My preferred hobby is flying R/C planes, and to a lesser degree R/C helicopters (though I'm not much good at the latter.) Every time there's some stupid-ass theory like this that comes up, we start worrying how long it'll be before somebody in government feels that our hobby requires ... regulation. For our protection, of course.
And besides, even when you're relatively experienced at flying these things, trying to hit a specific target is next to impossible. Sure, you can land on a runway that's 20 feet away from you, but trying to land on something 500 feet away? No way. And even the biggest planes could only hold a few pounds of explosives -- which I guess might be useful in a terror capability, making people stampede, but to do actual damage? No way. A truck could hold tons of explosive, a plane maybe 20 pounds (and that's a big R/C plane.) Which do you think would be more effective? And that helicopter in the picture? Less than five pounds of payload. - Derferman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PANIC!!!
I hate reports like these. As others diggers have said, pure fearmongering. People have to realize that you can never be safe and deal with it. Life is dangerous. Deal with it. - Wheemer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6That chopper can fly circles around a damn grouse.
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2By manned he means remotely controlled by a person, as opposed to already being programmed to do things independantly. So jamming the signal the remote control uses to communicate with it would stop it in the first scenario.
- turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How is this different to any of the other hyperbolic ***** we're daily told to be afraid of?
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2bomber drones are the last thing we need to worry about we have a million or so people coming across our borders illegally every fricken year...
I equate the US to the death star... we spend all our time building really big guns when the bad guys are really tiny. what ever happened to having a good defence being a defence..rather that a good offence...how can the national guard protect us..when they are over seas? - humanpowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry to see you're getting thumbs down. You've hit the proverbial nail on the head.
- mattmeow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nets anyone?? (would also keep the trained pigeons from dropping their explosives)
- sourcemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I can't believe you were modded down for your comment. This kind of article title is pathetic. Lame. Suicide bomber? Where?
- mapkinase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What he meant is that those drones have feelings too, you know...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OMFG Weapons of Massive Imformation Signatures... we must drop teh bombz. we must eat the terrorist's children LOL.
- valkyries, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2all we need is two things, beer and a bunch of red-neck with shotguns
that will also stop anyone trying to invade, lost of beer cans and shotgun shells every were - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Unmanned suicide bomber drones packed with explosives" - isn't that more commonly known as a missile? Seriously, what's the difference?
- gabeN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had the same thought immediately after seeing : this video http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5914999402901911766&q=RC+helicopter
Tell me that pilot, properly equiped/motivated could not take out any one/thing he wanted... - neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GPS, that's an interesting thought. Imagine one of these with a shaped charge, like the kind of thing they take out tanks with from the air. It carries a modified TomTom or similar for GPS navigation and has some extra circuitry to measure height plus an activation timer. You could drop it off anywhere within a few miles of the target, set the destination and timer, then drive off and be a long way away when it activates, takes off, navigates its own way to the target and then boom! Its not hard to see why this concept has people worried. The technology is already there.
What would be even more interesting is if someone developed a commercial venture around this idea. Speedy delivery of packages between two known points. It has possibilities. - soupisgoodfood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Even if GPS could be turned off (assuming the threat was noticed to begin with), they can always go back to using compass and airspeed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There is only one thing more dangerous than "Unstoppable" Flying Suicide Bomber Drones
...and that is Snakes on a Plane! - neondiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh gimme a break. Just because Terrorists are completely nuts, doesn't mean to say they are stupid. And Hollywood has been churning out stuff like this for years.
- sfacets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh yes, hordes of those about. This is getting rediculous. Strike that, it has been rediculous for some time now.
- godspiral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting how most of Digg is sighing a collective "meh", and dismissing it as fearmongering.
Its entirely true, that most of us can be murdered by far lower tech means. We have nothing to fear.
Protected targets on the other hand can be attacked easily and annonymously. According to politicians, conceiled gun permits are a great idea for your city, but a bad idea at campaign events. -
