- Saint07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+49I wonder if it would be easy to fool this software by holding up another picture of someone else?
- RickS2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34You have an ugly password!
- dirrtydirrty, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30Michael Jackson would have "password" problems every 2 years.
- Leion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26cool! will I get locked out of the system if I have a bad pimple?
- EztliNahua, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26No, YOUR face!
- Laputian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21This makes me concerned about the possibility of having an evil twin.
- bizstyler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Your password has expired. Please pull another face to change.
Note: At least one special pose is required.
e.g. Inside out eyelids, touching nose with tongue...
;O - bonyicecream, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Well if it's opposite day, then it isn't opposite day.

And your password is UGLY! - SurrealDream, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I bet I could show my arse and still be allowed access.
- duffbluff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Mythbusters have beaten the fingerprint scanner, I'd like to see them give the face scanner a shot.
- droversoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16That was the joke.
- darksheer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Hi, my name is Werner Brandes. My voice is my passport. Verify me.

- ubuwalker31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Or g-d forbid that you get involved in a serious accident causing your face to become disfigured.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12"Hey, you know what provides you access to all of your presonal information?"
"What?"
"YOUR FACE!"
Gosh, I feel dirty now. - Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Oh yeah? Well it's opposite day.
- Chairboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@strictnein: That's one of the more elaborate misspellings of 'Sneakers' I've seen.
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11But if it isn't opposite day, doesn't that mean it could be?
- TrueBuckeye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I am not a fan of biometrics as login mechanisms, be they face recognition, retinal scans, or finger print scans.
For one thing, you've just bypassed two-factor authentication. Rather than something you have and something you know (ie, username and password, or username and smart card) it is now just something you have. We have all seen that the fingerprint scanners are not foolproof, well neither are any of the others. If you were to combine this with a reasonably complex password, then I would be more apt to accept it.
Furthermore, one of the chief aspects of a good authentication mechanism is the ability to revoke one. What if we find that someone has made a cast of your right index finger and has used that to authenticate to the network? OK, we revoke it...and hope it doesn't happen nine more times. But what if it is your retinal pattern? We have one more shot...that's it. With a face? The moment we find that your non-secret, anyone can see it and take a picture of it authentication method has been compromised we have to permanently lock you out of the network.
Nah, biometrics work as PART of security, but they can't replace the whole shebang. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@mcvarmazi:
Beards don't usually matter for biometrics. They measure the distance between your eyes, etc.
@dtr2: "they used TWO separate snapshots of you"
What if I make a sculpture of your head? - fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8New password hack: Decapitation!
- snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm definitely FOR twins.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I am going to wear a ski mask. I don't want anyone to see my password.
Joe: "Why are you making faces at the computer?"
Al: "I am trying to guess the password." - NoHandle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9And your ass is your username?
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Biometrics is an extremely hard thing to use as identification. The system has to be loose enough to allow for the natural changes of the thing it is scanning and tight enough to find mismatches. What happens if some one is successful in stealing your face to pass. Now you have to change your password, but how are you going to do that? At least with fingerprints, you can have 10 chances. You only have so many different body parts. In my security class, we took a look at biometrics. The fingerprint model was very flawed. Someone was able to get the fingerprints of someone off glass and put it onto silly putty. And then they used that imprint to fool the reader. Biometrics seems like a cool thing, but it is extremely hard to make effective.

- iupetre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3what about twins?
- donkapone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4oh my... my evil twin is going to delete all of my pron...
- BiDi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4When "dickscanners" come in use if companies will only let the authorized personnel to use the bathroom, some people (mostly from management) will get the "your password is too short" message. And an optional: "try with your nose".
- HellifIno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just my 2 cents:
Biometrics of any type should not be the entire proof of identity for security uses. The ONLY real use for biometric identification via face should be in human-manned security checkpoints to check for troublemakers/terrorists. Non-manned cameras can easily be fooled by pictures, as stated above.
As also stated above, a fingerprint is too easily faked (mythbusters). I'm just talking about face recognition.
'Course, this is all coming from a guy who used L0phat liveCD on his bosses computer.....
Physical access is 99% of the problem. : ) - krewemaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unless it's cross platform, it'll be useless to me.

- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want his face... off!
- nafisto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dismissing face recog because you might get in an accident is like getting rid of passwords because you might lose your memory.
Complaining about its accuracy is also dumb--there's not indication that the technology won't improve over the next few years.
The real problem: just like passwords and fingerprints, using face recog as a single-factor authentication token is prone to inaccuracy. The better way to do it is to have multiple factors. It's just that nobody has found an efficient and cost-effective way to do it yet. - fuckingusername, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I tryed it and it failed

I'm not saying it won't work. I'm saying what I said above. And vid it and post it, FFS. - HellifIno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh come on! At least tinyurl to a mirror! Or hugeurl. Or Giganticurl! : P
Disclaimer: Yes, I didn't make links on purpose. Yes, I know my screen can't turn into a mirror.
I'm just reminded of the comic of Bush looking at the "person of the year" Time magazine (w/ the mirror on the cover). - incongruity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@vertinox
You wouldn't even need two cameras -- All you'd have to do is start with a head-on view and have the user turn their head to one side, slowly -- it'd be easy enough to generate a digital profile, effectively 3D, enough to beat the picture sham. If you wanted increased security, you could analyze the motion itself and fold those measurements into the mix. -
