World's elite hackers warn chains of cyber terrorism threat
news.bbc.co.uk — High street chains will be the next victims of cyber terrorism, some of the world's elite hackers have warned. Criminals could use the kind of tactics which crippled Estonia's government and some firms last year.

And by the way, Shakespeare only used his own material in his plays. The genius of him was not that he hosted great plays, but that he wrote the parts for them and constructed them.
That's a quality comparison, jackass.

"I don't like the looks of those teenagers! I'm cold, and frightened."- radu79, on 04/26/2008, -0/+3Not sure if you are aware, but BBC has kept up with the technological advances. They stream radio and TV on their website, they have RSS feeds, and they have some really good science articles and shows.
The threat is pretty real, there are huge bot nets out there, which are mostly unused. My guess is that they are trying to reach a critical mass, then unleash some attacks against big companies. This happened before, and even Yahoo got DoSed pretty bad.

***** that, the asshats that run ***** just want you to bow down yet again and give up your freedom so they can snoop around and do nothing. Common sense will save 4 billion people today and governments will kill a million. Don't listen to them, they lie. Think for yourself.
"Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense." -- Buddha - Stormwern, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1The headline sounded good, the real "world's elite hackers" don't make enough statements imo, guess they are too busy thwarting the digital plans of supervillains without us ever knowing. :)

"World's elite hackers warn chains of cyber terrorism threat"
Let me translate for the media challenged: "***** ***** hackers scary fear fear ***** terra-ism fear."
So, as another digger pointed out this is a type of propaganda. The fact that it is ***** is easy for a laugh, but then you have to consider WHY the western media is constantly trumpeting how "dangerous" the internet and "hackers" are and that same ol story about how a power grid was shut down (where they leave out all of the inconveieent details that make that story not so scary - to give an analogy it's like a burgler broke into a small, old house in the country and the story that appears in the media is "elite burgler squad penetrates white house security and steals W's herpes medication."
SO why pumping all of the fear about the net? Because the freedom of information, citizen journalists and the organizational power of the internet scares the ***** out of the people who are running things. They like having the corporate media be able to set the agenda and tell peopel who to thinki ablout and frame the issues.
They want to legislate the net into something like a combination of early AOL and the home shopping network. They want to remove anonymity, they want to be able to identify anybody online and may even propose licensing of tie your ID to an online account....This stuff is coming unfortunately and the first thing that has to be done for them to accimplish this is people and their representatives and corporations have to feel so threatened and insecure that they will allow or support it.- widgetmaker, on 04/26/2008, -9/+1I like how you've twisted a fairly small story about how hackers are likely to switch to higher profile targets, into OMG the government/big corporations is out to get us!!!111!!one eleven!!
- Impact0115, on 04/26/2008, -1/+5You did see the stuff about ISP playing a part in security over the internet, right?
Maybe you should read more than the first sentence and try to read between the lines. - isaactwito, on 04/26/2008, -1/+3Haven't you realized that the government is not trying to help you ever? They only do what they do for profit, all of it.
- Impact0115, on 04/26/2008, -1/+5You did see the stuff about ISP playing a part in security over the internet, right?
- nebs, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0I think you have possibly missed the point that was being made: government systems are getting harder to hit, and if attackers want to do cyber-terrorism, the easier targets are the likes of the high street (and they are less likely to be tracked down under terrorism laws that are more powerful than the CMA). The message was for board level people to raise their awareness so they are not made into an object in a cyber terrorism statement that costs them lots of cash. The objective was not to pump the Internet or media with fear, it was a simple observation and statement of opinion. There was no statement of wanting to add more laws, nor did 3 of the panel want the isp's to regulate or filter the Internet. I think you should study the content more before going off on a rant. - Just a thought, but then again I would know what the guy was saying and meant - I was the one sitting on the panel making the observation :-)

Might have to get LordNikon in on this *****..... - Ne007, on 04/26/2008, -1/+4Articles like this are the real terrorist threat.
Americans MUST stand up to this sort of disinformation and propaganda. - errabbaa, on 04/26/2008, -0/+0What will Kiven Mitnick think about that ???
lol !!!! - MrViklund, on 04/26/2008, -1/+2Do they even know what they are talking about? It was a simple DDoS attack in Estonia. It's kinda common on the INTERNETS!
- radu79, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Huh? A DDoS attack doesn't have to be beautifully complex, it just needs to be effective.
And I am not sure what you mean by "It's kinda common on the INTERNETS!". AFAIK, Estonia is the first and only country that was targeted at this kind of level. - whxre, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1Digg inadvertently does it all the time!
- NedSlider, on 04/27/2008, -0/+3I agree with radu79, it's pretty darn hard to defend against a determined DDoS attack, even when you think you're prepared for it.
It wouldn't be difficult for a botnet to take something like tesco.com offline if they wanted too as these guys sure aren't prepared... and even if they get themselves back up within a few days, the Bad Guys can simply move on to their next unprepared target.
I think the key difference at present is the vast majority of "Cyber Criminals" are in it purely for the money and don't have any particular political, or otherwise, axe to grind. When you earn a million a day from spam activities, why would you be bothered about taking down a small European country?
- radu79, on 04/26/2008, -0/+2Huh? A DDoS attack doesn't have to be beautifully complex, it just needs to be effective.
- IAmLegend24, on 04/26/2008, -0/+1The sky is not blue its pink the sky is blue nonsense is government propaganda just like WWII never happened.
- BushidoHacks, on 04/27/2008, -0/+0Meanwhile the rest of us not-so-elite hackers have been telling the internet that for years. But what do we know. We don't have criminal records like Mr. Elete.
