- JasonQpublic, on 11/08/2009, -18/+211I wouldn't be surprised if Apple were doing this to scare jailbreakers.
- luke16, on 11/08/2009, -1/+106so it turned out to be even better then
- klowngoblin, on 11/08/2009, -50/+134*****, no apple computers or hardware get viruses, the mac ads said so
/s - nmffffd9, on 11/08/2009, -1/+82I've downloaded a winterboard theme that was too good to be true and it turned out to be an animated Rick Astley wallpaper complete with the Never Give You Up soundtrack..
- pklall, on 11/08/2009, -1/+56Anyone stupid enough to have an ssh server running with a default password deserves much worse than this
- WilliamAdama, on 11/08/2009, -0/+53What people don't realize is that this is hardly hacking. When a user doesn't bother to change the default SSH password of a jailbroken phone, that user is basically leaving the front door open and asking for guests to come in. In this case, the guest left a welcoming present.
- captininsanity, on 11/08/2009, -0/+46Woah those are terms only uberhackers use. You must have some serious knowledge...
- aquapete, on 11/08/2009, -1/+45and if they aren't they will definitely use this to their advantage against jailbreakers.
- StuartGibson, on 11/08/2009, -4/+47However, if you enable access to anybody on the Internet and let them all know the password then it's user error. Note how it's only jailbroken phones, with SSH installed and the default password left that are vulnerable.
- aquapete, on 11/08/2009, -2/+40the article did kinda mention those are the people who got the worm.
- digirat, on 11/08/2009, -8/+35more info here: http://tinyurl.com/2g9mqh
- kafuka, on 11/09/2009, -0/+22Who would enable SSH without changing the default PW.
- Cglass, on 11/08/2009, -1/+22Why? I commend him for putting out something harmless so they can fix it.
That article was particularly harsh against him for trying to help, they even pay him out for "not covering his own tracks" when it's pretty clear he wanted to be discovered. - theonlywizdum, on 11/08/2009, -1/+20I would be grateful if someone found a way to break into my house and the only thing they did was leave a note telling me how to fix it.
- DaviDTC, on 11/08/2009, -1/+19Landaumanuk - I would feel retarded if I bought a house knowing that all the other houses in the area have the same lock/key and I didn't change mine so anyone could come in that has the default key. You know, like the people who kept their iphones with the default password that everyone knows. I do like how you think the default password is strong though.
Like what theonlywizdum said, I would be grateful if I was that retarded that the only thing they did was to leave a note. - angel.wardriver, on 11/08/2009, -3/+21Do we look like we have the same name or avatar? You are smart enough to drop a link but not smart enough to even tell us apart? hmmm????
- statik99, on 11/08/2009, -1/+19Wow. Obvious troll is obvious. My submission and hers are two totally different stories. While I appreciate dropping a link to my submission, you really need to put your glasses on, my avatar is nothing like angel.wardriver's. Thanks for playing the game but you FAIL.
- jordantneff, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17The one that gives you a blowjob
- spionkopred, on 11/08/2009, -0/+17I've racked my brain and can't for the life of me imagine what theme could be described as 'too good to be true'??
- jjustin01, on 11/09/2009, -3/+20Hey fanboys, the jailbreak is only possible because of a security hole in the iPhone OS, which Apple has yet to fix.
So, basically the hacker utilized a security hole that utilizes a security hole that Apple created in the first place. - Veni_Vidi_Vici, on 11/08/2009, -1/+16Seriously if anyone clicked that...
...you're stupid. - landaumanuk, on 11/08/2009, -1/+16Sophos are reporting that the guy who wrote the first iPhone worm is an Australian guy in his early twenties. They found his Twitter and MySpace page! http://www.sophos.com/blogs/gc/g/2009/11/08/iphone ...
Maybe his punishment should be three months of listening to nothing but Rick Astley songs.. - michirican123, on 11/08/2009, -1/+15Hasn't almost every apple virus been something like this?
- Spamcan, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14This only effects people that installed SSH after jailbreaking their iPhones then do not change their root password and leave SSH activated. Anyone who gets it has no one but themselves to blame, same with goes for any other device where people use the default password.
Jailbreak remains perfectly safe. - inactive, on 11/08/2009, -6/+19I am afraid of what is outside the Apple walled garden. I love Steve Jobs, he keeps me safe. All I have to do is give him complete control.
- NJDevils30, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12tinyurl comment in a rick roll submission
http://i165.photobucket.com/albums/u58/mdjturvey/D ... - joerdie, on 11/08/2009, -0/+12All users have to do is change their pass to stop this? Me thinks people are stupid... move along.
- anoriginalname, on 11/09/2009, -0/+11@JohnnySoftware
Surely you can't be that stupid. If you leave your keys in the car, while it's one with the door open. And you walk away from it for an hour, are you REALLY going to be suprised that it got stolen?
Leaving a default password the same then being surprised someone "guessed" it, is stupid. (hint: it's not guessing since it's default... it means they are ALL that password). - PaddyBass, on 11/08/2009, -10/+21Yet another reason to jailbreak! :-)
www.blackra1n.com - iritegood, on 11/09/2009, -0/+10Classy johnny, comparing a harmless worm that you can undo in a few seconds to first degree murder.
- benitojuarez, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9thats the most common way to get root access to any system......
- Fubeman, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9If you you're "savvy" enough to Jailbreak you iPhone then you should be "savvy" enough to either turn your SSH abilities off (SBSettings) OR change your password. Period. If not, you deserve to get hacked. Sorry. Jailbreaking is not for those users who can't handle the responsibility. If you are Jailbreaking your iPhone, fine, but you better know EXACTLY what you are doing and have the decency to deal with ALL aspects of it - namely know what SSH is and also know how to change your password. If not, shut up, don't complain and don't Jailbreak your phone. You can't have it both ways.
How to change your iPhone root password:
Step 1: If you haven’t installed MobileTerminal yet, go to Cydia and look for “MobileTerminal” and install the app, then reboot your iPhone.
Step 2: Lanch MobileTerminal and type su and hit return.
Step 3: You will be asked to enter your current password. Your default password is alpine so, type alpine and hit return.
Step 4: You are now inside your iPhone. We are now going to change the root password. Typepasswd and hit return. Make sure you type passwd correctly.
Step 5: You will be aske to enter a new password. Type whatever you want for your new password and hit return.
Step 6: You will be asked to enter your new password again. Do that and hit return.
That’s it. You have successfully changed your iPhone root password. Make sure you don’t forget it! - JohnnySoftware, on 11/09/2009, -2/+11There aren't rampant viruses/worms for Mac OS X.
If you read the news, there are sketchy programs - either pirated software or jailbreak type apps - that require t he end user to knowingly install them, despite it being a stupid idea and illegal or a violation of warranty/SLA/etc.
They install them and then some accidental or intentional flaw included with the sketch program is exploited, or it does the exploit right then. Classic Trojan horse technique - that's why they are called Trojans.
The program the guy down under wrote is not a computer virus. It is a computer worm. It's a "jailbreak worm", specifically. It only attacks the jailbreak iPhones.
By the way, there have been Windows mobile viruses out for years. One even cross-infects between MS-Windows PCs and Windows Mobile phones. Those viruses, the user does not have to get a program and install it to get infected - the program goes and gets them! - cryinlion85, on 11/08/2009, -14/+23it just wor...NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP!!
- lennynumberone, on 11/08/2009, -3/+11NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN!
- viniciusfontes, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8YO DAWG I HEARD U LIKE SECURITY HOLES
- MtheoryX, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8Unlike the cruel Steve Ballmer, who demanded that you stand, I require only that you kneel.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 11/09/2009, -1/+9Everyone know Apple actively discourages against jailbreaking your iPhone.
You can't say you didn't see this coming; you know the rules, and so do I. - jwdav, on 11/08/2009, -3/+11Given that Apple does not install ssh and that ssh is only installed and configured by jailbreakers, that would be a neat trick.
- madwh, on 11/08/2009, -3/+10Just turned off ssh via sbsettings.
- etx313, on 11/08/2009, -0/+7SON OF A..
- andeh72, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9Oh, f u Digg, seriously. I posted the story a day ago and no one gave a *****. http://digg.com/apple/iRickRoll_virus_hits_iPhones
I felt a compulsion to digg it after I woke up, looked at my phone and saw Rick Astley's face staring at me.
Never thought that would happen... again. - rjbeckjr, on 11/08/2009, -2/+9NEVER GONNA TURN AROUND?
- JohnnySoftware, on 11/09/2009, -3/+9No, read the interview of the author.
This guy who wrote the worm wrote a program to exploit a flaw in the jailbreak. In effect, the jailbreak leaves a back door open on the iPhone. He used the jailbreak backdoor.
Apple's programmers wrote programs to remove the jailbreak. And Apple itself warned people repeatedly through many channels not to install the jailbreak. Short of whacking the phones out of people's hands, they did everything they could to prevent this. - purplesawdust, on 11/09/2009, -2/+8AND HURT YOU!
