- johanneshint, on 06/10/2008, -1/+24I'm from Estonia and yea. it was pretty creepy. not to mention that russia stopped importing goods into estonia (or through estonia to other countries like sweden) for a week or so.
When USSR collapsed then Russia said that Estonia will fall and will be a very poor country (Estonia was the first country to declare themselves free from the shackles of Ussr). But, Estonia started doing really good and now russia just can't cope with it.
Actually, it's a interesting story how the baltic states got free. (for example: we made the baltic chain which was over 600km long. 2 million people holding hands in unity against the big bear)
*tear* (no really. tear.) - inactive, on 06/10/2008, -1/+13/war
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -1/+10This wasn't a wide-scale attack. It was a coordinated attack by Putin's boys at the Kremlin, one which Russia has never paid adequately for. Where the heck was the EU support? Why wasn't there retaliation?
- WaxTrax, on 06/10/2008, -6/+15Is anyone else getting sick of all this "2.0" ***** being plastered EVERYWHERE now?
- tarley, on 06/10/2008, -0/+8Warefare!
- Sillywombat, on 06/10/2008, -2/+10Erm... Wouldnt it be world war 3.0??
Isnt someone forgetting WWII....
WTF? - craighoxton, on 06/10/2008, -1/+8There WILL be retaliation - the EU are just saving it up for when Putin decides to shut the natural gas pipelines to the West.
- dudefather, on 06/10/2008, -0/+7if they converted console wars to actual wars we would face a nuclear winter

- HookmasterCH47, on 06/10/2008, -1/+5Cyber warfare may change the game a little bit, but until you can use a computer to directly put a boot in someone's ass and cause physical damage it really doesn't change too much. So it's just another tool that helps put more boots on the ground.
- verkon, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4We were invited! Punch was served!
- slundal, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Thus "World War 2.0"

- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2indeed.. it has become quite the cliché
- Viend, on 06/10/2008, -1/+3You know the big man now is Medvedev. Putin is still big but not as big.
- inactive, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2Cyber-war is the future
Nearly all of modern day military information (secret and all) is stored within an electronic communication network.
Elite hacking skills can cause devastating losses to enemy states.
1) You can steal information, top-secret and all (if its not protected well). Just ask Garry ‘Solo’ McKinnon
2) You can shutdown communication systems. Disorientate armies and plans. No communication = no coordination = disorientation = vulnerability
This can also effect the domestic and economic sides of countries. Domestic companies and business that require the internet for communication could be at risk of collapsing. - xerox, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2unless those firewalls become compromised, just as the original host did? Would it really be that hard to kill off a host-run firewall on an ALREADY compromised computer? I doubt it.
- Scottc320, on 06/10/2008, -2/+3!EXECUTE "zombies"

- kayjay, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1i prefer cyber wars over real wars.
we might be poorer a bit but at least we're still alive - rhartman, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Uhh, wasn't this "wide scale attack" on Estonia's internet infrastructure determined to be actually the work of just some bot hackers disgruntled that a Russian statue was being dismantled?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyberattacks_on_Eston ...
Hardly "cyber-warfare". - Harabeck, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1Makes Anonymous look pretty pathetic by comparison doesnt it?
- gn0stik, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1WW I was primarily trench warfare.
WW II introducted so many new paradigms in weaponry and strategy it wasn't even recognizable to WW I vets.
The fact that this article uses World War is misleading, and having used it, label's 2.0 is just indicative of a lack of reasoning.
If it was simply a paradigm change indication, they could have used 1.0, as 2.0 would infer that some kind of digital world war had already taken place. - sddream, on 06/10/2008, -1/+2Wait, according to Pentagon's logic, since it originated from around the world. Doesn't it just mean the world all attacked Estonia.
- Jack8274, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1The idea that this attack was wide-spread is improbable. Very well organized, good techniques, but a large group of people would have to be digg's size for an attack to actually work if not organized.
- Spacecortez, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1World War II was fought using similar methods as WWI. The article title implies a paradigm shift.
- ivan423, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Иван Васильевич Меняет Профессию. It's pandemonium 2008! Everything is crazy as hell!
- Nexusmonkey, on 06/10/2008, -2/+2If everyone had a firewall botnets would not be a problem.
- SunAlex, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0interesting story. Will wait the end)

http://search.ashtech.info/security - duckyinc, on 06/10/2008, -1/+1Erm cyber warfare is war 2.0? So basically I can't shoot the hackers in the head.. strange. War 2.0 is going to be lasers and drones >:D
- Nicoon, on 06/11/2008, -0/+0The Bombe, Alan Turing and The Enigma machine means nothing to you?
As for the versioning, it was surely to draw parallels with the Web 2.0 or in the sense that moving from traditional weaponized warfare to digital warfare as a new playing field. - MyNameBrown, on 06/11/2008, -1/+0Thanks, very informative topic..

- sfacets, on 06/10/2008, -4/+2Misleading - it is obvious that the Russian govt. had no part i the attacks, and that this was orchestrated by "hacker" cooperatives on the internet.
