- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3...people seem to forget that part of the reason there are many virii for windows is due to it's widespread use by computer illiterate people. Don't for a second think that you can't write a virus for linux. You most definately can, except that if you are using linux you obviously know what you are doing on a computer. Thus, it makes little sense for someone to write a virus for it. Instead they will plague windows users who are more likely to put them selves in a position to contract it. Im not saying osx/windows/linux are at the same level as far as security, just that windows gets attacked much much more and people seem to forget that.
- yathosho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it's a shell-script, not exactly a virus
- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Superfluous, you are exactly right.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ehh, can you MS haters calm down a bit, you'll pop a vessel and Bill will just laugh some more.
Writing a shell script isn't exactly a 'virus', and I'm surprised people are hyping this so much. It doesn't actually have an ability to spread, nor does it have an infection vector besides users executing everything they download, and it doesn't do anything malicious outside what appears to be a resource hogging script, maybe an extra GOTO 10 line. :-D - t_stehilaire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Damn you Angelina Jolie!! When will your band of hacker misfits finally stop your barrage against The Gibson??
I second that, goat. - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dezrik, you ever use linux or mac for more than a week?
10th grade doesn't sound like sysadmin-level advice... - CompIsMyRx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FYI, just about any virus that can run on a UNIX-like system (Linux, BSD, etc) can run on a Mac (MacOS X uses a lot of UNIX parts).
- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0p.s. Bring on the flames...
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0writing viruses now before vista comes out will only make antivirus software better
- gorkon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting....since it uses monad, it WON'T SHIP WITH VISTA! I remember reasing on PCMagazine's site that Monad was not shipping when Vista is released. Honestly, it's not that big of deal
- Gavin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Always some Jack butt trying to ruin something..
- The_Monarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see the point of writing viri..
Spyware, adware..Whatever..
You're usually hurting the community more than the company..
Dicks. - raven95, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats funny. os didn't come yet there is a Viruses out for it
- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dezrik, how would you know if you had a virus if you don't have AV software? Do you actually trust web-scans or is your PC not connected to the internet? Granted I haven't gotten a virus in who knows how long thankfully, but I check for them religiously just in case.
- j_bellone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shell Script. Can do the same thing for Linux and OSX.
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Mac has about the same viruses out for windows"
That's total BS and FYI I am a linux user myself who also happens to own a mac and a pc (XP sp3) - Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lmao @ Goat Good idea... not
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol... if it has been made im sure you could code one just like it right?... learn C++ Exploit righting uhh maybe some VB :D
- alphaone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blaster wasn't doing anything except spreading...until it was time to attack windows update.
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ If you didn't notice, most of the hate is pro-MS.
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Blaster Slowed down windows not just Spreaded
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe Done a Few HouseCall Virus Scan never a Virus Came up... on Spyware/Adware on the other hand probably had every Spyware out at one time Good ol' Spybot Stops that
- xedeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha oops sp2
- catoutfit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"*****, lol"
I would like to hear more opinions from this guy on the issue. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^No they didn't...thats the problem.LOL
- weezerrock86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn I just submited a link to the similar story... but this didnt show up in the duplicate story section. Either way it sucks for MS but its Beta so Im sure no one is worried.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ooo, wow, he wrote a virus for a BETA version of an OS. Way to go . . .
- isoprophlex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahhh HA HA HA HAaaaa....
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, i'm flaming. I'm gonna get out of this before i burst a blood vessel or something :)
- tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sorry, i own a company that does PC repair so I have no time for games.
That keeps me busy enough! - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh, even if the ratio of mac to pc is 2:98,
the ratio of viri is infinitely in OS X's favor... - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to Network Associates, owners of McAfee antivirus:
there are 71,000 known viruses
26 of them are for Mac
All 26 are for OS 9 or earlier
NONE for OS X - prairieson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used and/or supported everything from a Heathkit H-8 to IBM Big Iron for more years that I care to think about. OSX, Windows, Linux, Unix, Minix, Citrix. There is nothing obvious about a user's OS preference. Granted, *nix users have, in the past, tended to be more tech-savvy, bit it in no way means that "you obviously know what you are doing on a computer". In fact, during the past couple of years, I've encountered many people who have switched to Linux who are typical of the commonly perceived "Clueless Windoze User". They just switched because it's the "1337" thing to do. In the same way Script kiddies != hackers... Linux != tech knowledge. Hopefully it can lead to it, but downloading an ISO don't make you a genius.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wow, i'm flaming"
yea i wouldnt take that out of context - kingamoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am so sick of Mac heads. You guys need to chill the ***** down about convincing people to switch to Mac.
PCs and Macs are like Apples ... and Oranges that taste like ass. - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ I can't believe i said that. ***** me, that's funny.
(embarrassed, slowly clicks the little red x at the top right of safari) - TuckWat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why are people so afraid windows? I've never had a virus that has actually done harm - If you have a virus scanner... which i disable most of the time and a brain, it shouldn't be a problem.
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a Mac and ive used Windows xp... im on Slackware now
Top 4
#1 Linux
#2 Unix
#3 Mac
#4 Winblows
The Mac is my Sisters .... uhh its alright for encoding movies and stuff - castufari, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every tiny problem with any OS is always going to bring on attacks by people who use something else, it's the nature of the Internet. You'd think that the majority of users were 12 or so.
The stink shouldn't be because there is a virus but because there was a security hole (if there was one). Companies need to be more responsive and users need to use some common sense.
Where I used to work at we had a virus hit. Took out a bunch of machines on the network next to us. All of our boxes were ok since I routinely updated SARC. We had 3 people get it...our "IT guru", who said he knew how to configure SARC (worthless if it's not pointing somewhere to get updates!) and 2 of his buddies. The virus *took his PC out of commission*, it was funny. Wouldn't even boot. Muhahaha.
On the virus end, if you were going to write a virus, would you write one for unpatched machines running Windows 95a or DOS? No, you'd look for a problem in something popular. At least I would. Writing a virus for something that is way out of date or unpopular is like coming out for a custom bodykit for a Yugo....WHY? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well if youre a sysadmin and you get spyware and viruses, maybe you shouldnt be adminning sys's
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monad is not part of Vista. It's not in the Vista Beta 1 build. Monad's not in Longhorn Server, either.
- paulbram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is complete BS. I can't believe this is being called a "virus".
1. It uses Monad which doesn't even ship with Vista beta1.
2. It's a script! Executable code isn't the enemy, it's the entry point! Was that compromised? Nope...
This is pathetic, nothing more than someone trying to get their 15 minutes. This "virus" could be written for any OS since it's just executable code at its core and has nothing to do with Windows Vista. - nickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oops, rm *.*
my 'virus' is better than his.... - nickm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0rm -y *.*
- dewey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simply using one virus scanner does not tell you for sure if you have a virus or not, since they can manipulate programs a`la rootkits.
Monad is a standalone shell, that will not even be released with Windows Vista final version. The current plan is to release it at a later date. - Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+05blocksfree, what you said is true but not relevent. Read my post again. I said, "Im not saying osx/windows/linux are at the same level as far as security", because they clearly are not. But my point was that windows gets attacked much much more.
- lilgryph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh big whoop I've already cracked Mac OS XI... Yeesh, get with the times you stupid hax0rz!
- Dezrik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lmao @ Goat... my little brother could do that
- dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the article clearly states that the virus is more "proof of concept" and more annoying than harmful.
- AmZa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0omgzz M$ lolzz!!11
it's a ***** shell script like the first person said... not that hard to write. -
