- Pandalume, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Folks like you are part of the reason I run my website as a subscription service. If ads paid the bills I could offer everything for free, but it's not possible. Don't be surprised when the day comes that every website requires a subscription and/or micropayments to access the content. Enjoy the free ride while it lasts.
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -1/+9It's my only friend.
- bumfish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9there ARE viruses for mac as well you know. dont get too complacant
- r00tus3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Well, they were caught, punished and removed from the Adsense program. Move along, nothing more to see here gentlemen.
- parthanant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10This had to happen.
Javascript and Virus are good friends. - clichemonster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Online advertising is actually a growth industry. Radio didn't kill Print, Television didn't kill Radio, Tivo didn't kill Television, and script blockers aren't going to kill online advertisements. The vast majority of people aren't conscientious enough to (or are exactly apathetic enough not to) install extra levels of ad blocking, and that's okay. I've used ads for link-surfing and found loads of good stuff.
COMMERCE IS A GOOD THING. Advertising works. Viruses suck and with a little bit of thought and effort you can avoid them. - Evolve, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Im still amazed at how some websites are still making $$ from Google Adwords (and other pay4click programs)
With Firefox + AdBlock Plus there are no google adverts, no flashing banners, etc.
Even with Internet Explorer 7 there is IE7 Pro (http://www.ie7pro.com) which provides the same function as AdBlock Plus. - Aidanjalali, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Curious.....What I saw on the side of this digg page: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/Aidanjalali/freevirus.jpg

Got cut off there. Try again...
I remember the web before IE (before Netscape even) and it was a pretty dry and boring place. Yes, ideas were exchanged freely but most people will agree that the Web really became exciting when professional people started developing content for it. People are simply more motivated to create quality content when they are getting paid for it.
I am not a blogger (my website is in my profile) but I don't see what is wrong with placing value on ideas. Once ideas become worthless then all you will have are worthless ideas... - ksponge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@Majin_Raditz (#6357404)
Me too man!! But I'm on Windows! Still never had a virus in 10 years! Go figure eh? It's called intelligence. Get some. Now back to LOTRO, won't be seeing you there I suppose. - Pandalume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@yorn
I'm not a "blogger". My web site is in my profile. - indicas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would venture to say the majority of web users do not have AdBlocker installed. If you knew how much money could be made with AdSense/AdWords you would quit your day job..
- JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His site is a small, unknow wallpaper website called Digital Blasphemy, for the lazy ones out there...
I also remember the old days (luminiscent fungus from digital blasphemy included) and I prefer the professional high quality of the websites of today, with ellaborated designs and useful features wich are, incredibly, free (look the free account in many sites, like all the Google services, Flickr, etc) - because the money comes from the ads. I use AdSense but... how many millions of users don't know they can avoid advertisements?
I understand everyone has the right to get money from his work, and I prefer to have to see ads rather than have to pay money. - FiP0, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9fanboy.
Also, google ads aren't flashy or obnoxious, I do not block them. They are used by a lot of "small" websites. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox + AdBlock + CustomizeGoogle = What Google Ads?
- chalkboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ads are why stuff is free. I like my free stuff. I would be pissed if I had to pay for digg. I would suggest that you turn off adblocking for the sites you like. Unless you want to pay for them.
- khafra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0-1 attention whore.
- mana99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0CustomizeGoogle users will be happy to know that all URLs on sponsored links are visible in the status bar when hovering them. :-)

Been there, done that. It actually was quite nice. It was called the-WWW-before-Adsense-and-IE6, I can't wait to get back to the free and ad-free exchange of real ideas again. People like you want to quit their jobs and blog. I got news for you, information is only going to get cheaper and cheaper and cheaper, you're comments are soon literally going to be worth .02, and that's the way it *should* be. - meomee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Arhaaaaaa....... virus.
- boomshakalaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'll not tell you what he does, because its soo simple, everyone would do it.....and then my mate wouldnt be able to keep under the radar anymore!"
he's placing small classified ads in newspapers and magazines, isn't he? i'll bet he, as a high school dropout, will be a multi-millionaire by 19 and only then, when he realizes that his secret can save the world will he go on television and peddle a set of books for $149.95 that will lay his secrets out. it'll be fantabulous! a home business revolution where no one will have to go to work ever again! - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1bury
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Anyone else read the title as "Vista writers..."? I guess I that's what I get when I'm not really paying attention to what I'm reading. Of course the story is still plausible with Vista substituted for virus. ;)
- jeremiahx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1because there are 400 gazillion people on the internet that barely know how to install IE (yes I know that it even comes pre-loaded)
I use adwords to drive traffic to my website and it works... people who are computer dumb click on those ads... it's amazing but it still works. - fLUx1337, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Not wanting to sound like "ive got a supr haxxor mate..." or anything, but I know somebody whos been playing this "game" for nearly a year now!
Hes not made anything big, nor does he infect other peoples computers to do his dirty work, he just uses some php skills I taught him (well, hes better than me now....*****), and hes £££ in now! ;)
Not loads of £££, but a decent amount, and Google hasnt caught him yet! :D
I'll not tell you what he does, because its soo simple, everyone would do it.....and then my mate wouldnt be able to keep under the radar anymore!
(at the begining, he even emailed in an exploit which he found in the js, but he decided to stop telling them what he'd found when all he got was a semi-automated reply! hehe)
Exploit the system... ARHHH! - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1naw...vista is soo far from conscious it's not even funny
In fact I'm more likely to read "Vista" as "Virus" - DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2your such a rebel
- clichemonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The issue is, of course, that people expect an ad network like Google to have checks in place to keep this kind of thing from happening. It shows that the web is full of the same kind of blind consumerism that allows us to sue for spilling hot coffee in our laps. The "I should be able to buy things with as little regard for what I'm doing as I'd like, but be protected because the act of buying something makes me special" attitude is antiquated in the "real world', and online.
Switch browsers, update your browsers, be aware of what you're clicking - not because you're doing Google or MS or Mozilla a favor, but because being a responsible, informed consumer is the RIGHT THING TO DO. - plutark, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Totally agree with evolvle, use firefox and adBlock Plus and you won't see the adverts etc...
- Lionstone, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1NoScript with FF is a good one too.
* - homeless123, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1agree...
use FireFox or Shiira - Pacificblue, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeah use another browser like FF or opera.
I once used IE after long time of using FF and felt something different, then i realized its the ads and the popup windows. Somehow I realized what FF + Adblock is doing for us, is taken for granted.
Ok ok, I was using IE6 coz i never cared to install IE7 coz of FF :) - pittbug, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Some of the passwords stolen have been for AdWords accounts, some people on WMW have found strange things happening to their accounts.
- Fhwqhgads, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Adblock is your friend.
- DrawingTheSun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1hello this is not a test
- c0ldfusi0n, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7Whoa, you mean these still exists? Ever since i installed AdBlock a few years ago, i totally forgot about those. Use Firefox, people.
- Majin_Raditz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Man I hate my stupid mac, I want to get on the Virus fun to darn it!
- JoshChan, on 10/12/2007, -13/+0I never clicked ads. Oops.
