- novenator, on 03/29/2009, -6/+66This is quite possibly the best viral April Fools Day prank ever. Shhh...
- DeskFlyer, on 03/30/2009, -3/+52"but not expected to wreak havoc"
Then why did 60 minutes feature it tonight in a spot named "The Internet is Infected"? Or was that a paid ad for Norton? - waydee, on 03/30/2009, -2/+41I'm still hoping it does something awesome like DDoS twitter.
- trebashkin, on 03/30/2009, -1/+35That was a terrible feature. "So, I'm infected now?" Does she represent the entire "I click obvious virus links" category of human beings?
- shannondoko, on 03/30/2009, -1/+31Average usage seems to DDoS twitter..
- Willtheway, on 03/30/2009, -4/+33Skynet
- wehmbulance, on 03/30/2009, -2/+23What? Conficker is evolving!
- chrisduser, on 03/30/2009, -6/+25Step 1: Set computer date to April, 1st 2009
Step 2: Wait for something to happen.
Step 3: ????
Step 4: Profit - aceakm, on 03/30/2009, -0/+18Conficker has evolved into... *Gameboy shuts off*
- KloroFormd, on 03/30/2009, -1/+19A wild FIREWALL has appeared!
- Tenoq, on 03/30/2009, -2/+20Tell your boss if he did his Windows Updates back in October it wouldn't be a problem. :p
- feliks2, on 03/30/2009, -1/+17Last night my friend got scared because he was using the internet on our friends mac, and some thing popped up saying the ocmputer was infected. He started freaking about it, I took a look at it, and it was a pop up within firefox that looks like a winxp MyComputer window with some vaguely Norton-y ***** about viruses. It was pretty funny.
- davecachia, on 03/30/2009, -2/+16My boss has called us all in to be ready for this virus on Wednesday - not cool.
- venom8599, on 03/30/2009, -0/+14Quick! Tap B!
- MiGs2, on 03/30/2009, -1/+14One could only hope. If you hold A for 3 seconds, it won't evlove.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -5/+17Virus writers: just fix windows and quit ***** around
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -2/+12I wonder if my tapeworm is going to evolve too.
- nymphetamine, on 03/30/2009, -2/+11You need a fire stone for it to evolve.
- encrypteduser, on 03/30/2009, -0/+9Everyone is making such a big deal about this. The only thing that happens on April 1st is the generate_random() function is called. This starts creating a list of upto 50k possible domain names, which are all used as rendezvous points for the previous list of infected machines.
All you have to do to make sure you are protected is:
1. Make sure that you aren't currently infected. (http://www.activescan.com will detect/remove it for free)
2. Make sure that your system is patched (http://www.windowsupdate.com) - du4l1ty, on 03/30/2009, -0/+9The pros do it by walking around in their socks for a half hour carefully making sure not to touch door knobs and then touching the motherboard.
- JulyZerg, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8A friend of mine sent another friend the animated GIF with the words VIRUS DOWNLOADING and a picture of a virus, and the guy freaked out.
Some people are just clueless... - artfuldodga, on 03/30/2009, -8/+16i have zero pitty for anybody who hadn't patched their systems back in october
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -0/+8The virus itself may have a mind of its own :(
- copypastry, on 03/30/2009, -1/+8Ah *****, it's gonna evolve on April 1st?
Everyone press "B"
/pkmn - ryan83189, on 03/30/2009, -3/+10They did something about it to prevent such a problem.
- dextermanas, on 03/30/2009, -7/+13FTA: "Among the ways one can tell if their machine is infected is that the worm will block efforts to connect with websites of security firms such as Trend Micro or Symantec"
Sounds like a good enough reason to install the worm! - inactive, on 03/30/2009, -1/+7How will I know what Shaq is doing right NOW?
- Autodidaddict, on 03/30/2009, -3/+8Y2K strikes again....
- lepetitmousse, on 03/30/2009, -1/+6so what if you disconnect your computer from the internet and turn it off that day?
/i dont really know anything about computers - dondada619, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5What if I put a tinfoil hat on my computer?
- XEusioN, on 03/30/2009, -2/+7The virus checks the date/time from sites like Yahoo and MSN rather than your internal system clock...so, no profit for you.
- cbrack, on 03/30/2009, -0/+5botnet.
- mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -0/+4Zing!
- d03boy, on 03/30/2009, -3/+7Y2K would have caused a lot of problems if it hadn't been handled properly. Everyone checked their software and fixed it because news stories like this made them aware.
- uclinux, on 03/30/2009, -1/+5now just as a note remember osx was cracked first in both last year and this year's pwn to own contests. osx is vulnerable to attack also.
p.s. i am happy mac user - Fishnchipsman, on 03/30/2009, -4/+7But I have a Mac...
/s - mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3There are quite a few sections where the article assumes that there is no other OS in existence (apart from Windows).
FTA :
" Computer users are advised to stay current on anti-virus tools and Windows updates, and to protect computers and files with strong passwords."
They should really write :
"Windows users are advised ... " - tsaw1583, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Funny, if you go to the CBS 60 Minutes web site and watch last nights video on this, Guess what 30 second ad you see? Yup.. Norton Anti Virus.
- inactive, on 03/30/2009, -3/+5I tried to make a funny joke about Y2k, digg apparently does not approve.
- gamelab, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3On April 1st Conficker will take over everyone's computer and Rick Roll all the users in the world. Oh the horror!!!!
- MrTea, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3use linux
problem solved - hyperspaztik, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Well, if it's already in your system, it will just use your system time within Windows and still attack your system. It just won't be able to harvest itself to other systems through the internet.
- du4l1ty, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2The best part of that interview was that there was a picture of awesome.jpg on the infected site.
- vicsvenge, on 03/30/2009, -1/+3osx is only vulnerable to attack if the user gives the password to give a program administrative privileges.
- kgerm, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2the reason is money, as in they get payed per machine they have compromise...
btw Linux/ unix is not as secure as you think i have witnessed a linux server compromised above root level in about 15 minuets ...
not to mention if your program is sitting in a server chances are it will be found / removed rather quicker then say if it was sitting on your average User machine.
just my 2 cents. - saranagati, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2i dont know about you, but i look down the barrel while pulling the trigger. pulling the trigger verifies that there were no bullets in the clip either.
- mrBitch, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2Windows Updates won't help you if your work place has not disabled ALL of your USB ports from ALL of your Windows PCs and laptops :
http://72.14.235.132/search?q=cache:M1orX1sVbyMJ:w ...
" ... This has been tested and works on both Win XP Pro & Vista machines.. " - Born2Rune, on 03/30/2009, -0/+2I understand what you mean and it makes sense. But the virus relies on the stupidity of the user. A server is not likely to download the virus in the first place. Second there is more users than servers. It will allow the virus to spread quicker, the quicker it spreads the less likely it can be stamped out so fast. And virus writers are likely to write a virus for a popular OS. Windows = most popular OS in the world. I am sure that if OSX or Nix systems was more popular then we would see more virus's for those systems. Nothing is 100% secure.
- seltaeb4, on 03/30/2009, -12/+13I have zero pity for anyone still using Windows.
- jlopez28, on 03/30/2009, -1/+2"A tenacious computer worm which has wriggled its way onto machines worldwide is set to evolve on April Fool's Day"...SYKE! hahahah April fools!
