- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28PC - Hi, I'm a PC.
Mac - And I'm a Mac! Don't I look good?
(Audience: No)
PC - I'm off to play some games. Maybe a shoot'em up, some wargames...I was even thinking of some basketball. Or maybe some football. Whatever I feel like doing.
Mac - What's a game?
PC - You know, it's something thing you do for fun when you're not working.
Mac - Fun? What's a fun? - r121, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21@phpirate - You said it. It's fine and dandy to have a utility to disable this "feature", but I simply cannot trust software that is doing things like phoning home behind my back. That sort of behavior does not belong on my pc. I will not ask my operating system for permission to use my computer.
- brandonking, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23Oh good. I can play City of Villains too right? and Fear? All at native speeds, right? I mean, with my Crossfire setup and have at least the same level of stability, right? Stop ***** suggesting Linux every time there's a problem with Windows. It's obnxious and makes me prefer Windows over a bunch of mindless zealotry. I don't care if Linux is 'better' if I have to deal with, or become, someone like you.
- green.ninja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Outcry over WGA phoning home isn't about piracy, it's about the right to privacy
- Cookieman123, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Anything to stick it to the man, thanks
- redforty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15yeah, but can I play CS on it?
- CowboyBebop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Or you can use the cracked version of WGA that's available on the web.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8so now its a fight over which position the buttons are in?? great...
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Don't they already have lovely utilities designed to block user-designated traffic? I think they're called firewalls?
- psyon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I just denied read and execute permissions on WGALogon.dll and WGATray.exe. Problem solved.
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I just got Vonage so my PC could call Gates and would stop wasting my minutes, finally no more 40 bucks a month. The WGA feels like the NSA.
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I truely don't want the software doing ANYTHING it isn't told to do. (That even goes for the LEGAL versions of Windows and other software owned).
I make sure that I approve every download into the system, and that I approve the Windows Updates that go into the system.
Also, I install a fresh copy of Windows every few months to keep it spyware/virus free. Doing so is a lot easier than cleaning it with any removal tools. - sid123, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10pirated windows has nothing to do with wga phoning ms
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -22/+28I'm sure its a great utility, but the best solution is just not having it on your computer ;)
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I own a copy of XP and although it doesn't bother me as of yet, I'll be paying close attention to any news regarding changes to the information that is collected. If it starts getting too deep, I'll be glad utilities like this exist.
- fredclown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Just put Zone Alarm on your machine and deny WGA access to the internet.
- jzimmerman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@SeptBoot
"Stolen" is not the appropriate word. All licensing guidlines were followed. WINE was BSD licenses when it was forked to create Cedega. The BSD license does not prohibit commercialization.
While the WINE project certainly wasn't happy about this (they have since changed to the LGPL license), they are the ones who originally chose the BSD license.
Please read up on your open source licenses before accusing someone of stealing.
For what Cedega provides to Linux users those who purchase a license must feel that it is worth it. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ scratchpd - most of the better firewalls fixed the dll injection threat a few years back - just thought you'd like to know.
- hydrokayak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I edited it in the registry. Tough to do if you don't trust your PC skills... :)
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://digg.com/software/10_ways_to_remove_Windows_Genuine_Advantage_nag_screen.
- scratchpd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes, but the problem is you just cant do that.
there is no way for you to know what data itunes, skype and so on collect. even online gamers have to allow their games to spy on their files to prevent cheating.
if i was determined enough i could take my useful application and send your private files using steganography. you would never know.
this is the huge advantage of open source software. i can assume there is someone who will ring an alarm bell if something is weird.
edit : i also unchecked the genuine advantage tool in windows update. but surprise, few days later it was installed anyway. maybe i should be more careful.. or maybe.. - scratchpd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4quick explanation : you can inject a .dll into any running process in windows and that dll can be your malicious code. so if i have a trojan in your system i can make my dll run with your firefox and chances are you will say "OK" if you firewall asks you if it should allow firefox.exe to connect to the web.
also just read this a couple of weeks ago : http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles/Alternate_Data_Streams.html
there are a lot of beautiful ways to bypass pretty much everything that supposedly should secure your system. out of boredom i wrote a cheap keylogger and had a friend run it on windows vista beta. guess what, still works. scary..
i believe we need windows and i believe windows needs a redesign. - joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3holy ... good idea. Does it really work? Anyone else know?
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know why people dugg me down. Maybe they misunderstood?
I was saying up there is the best protection is removing WGA from your computer in total. I don't need it since I don't use IE, media player, defender and so on so the entire point of having it is defeating. If its not on my computer than it can't call home ;) - SeptBoot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7first of all its $50 and cedega stole from open source software (wine) and is now selling it with a pretty GUI, but wine is catching up
so please dont use cedego, use wine, and its free! - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MS will just release a new version that gets around this hack.
- Jagmatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Okay, so we work at a multi million dollar company, and millions of copies of our software are being stolen. The sales are down because we released a non innovative version or 3, but our boss is riding our asses about sales figures. how do we stop pirating. do we
A) open up our code for everyone to see *twirls around in a circle throwing flowers*
B) find a way to remotly disable software if they connect to the internet which everyone loves *kicks a baby*
neither generates sales, but one of them takes a stab at piracy...
**for the comment above.. i use ubuntu, and i use mac osx for some work.. but i dont like people telling me there are alternatives that are substitutes.. thats bogus. and if you have been in any working environments you know how platform dependent places are. - seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yes. yes. they dont want you to find it, and its all instillations, even legal ones.
You sound kinda worried. Have you done anything wrong? o.O - mranime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well duh
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"If everyone on the planet switched to Linux tomorrow "
Oh yah, like that's gonna happen.
It would be like the time that guy broke his stopwatch on The Twilight Zone. - JMJimmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish my personal computer was just that, personal. I paid for my copy of windows, and gone through the verification, why the ***** should they check constantly.
Microsoft wants to be a parole officer I guess? I have to check in with them every two weeks to reassure them I'm on the straight and narrow, that the copy I paid for ages ago, I still paid for ages ago... OH WAIT, I haven't committed a crime, why do I need a parole officer???
Once Vista comes out, I'm switching to Linux. I've had enough BS. - tormented, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Since you have been dug down apparently not.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a bit more than just a service, do some research - you'll know then why you have to reset your computer to install it "properly" and to uninstall it "properly".
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actualy you can put your buttons anywhere you want on Windows.
- joshjoneswas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amen. Although I have never been sure about making the code open source as an anti-piracy measure. Explain that one?
- Jagmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well you cant steal something thats open source :)
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I'd rather deal with Windows than with those Linux idiots any day. At least when I need to search for Microsoft information, I don't need to slog through insults, rants, obscenities and information about 299 other versions of Linux I don't have installed.
WGA is more a topic of conversation than a real inconvenience. - GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you really need to keep installing XP then take a look at http://www.nliteos.com/nlite.html
Possibly a bit easier than the method ramfree17 describes. - scratchpd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@iSEPIC : thanks for the feedback. if what you say is true i can sleep better now. : ) i was just looking into this recently and found that everything worked for me. but i hope youre right.
- tormented, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're already designated Doom ports.
- sailor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks seta , good reply..but I don't think these closed minded, children will ever understand...:p
But one thing to add..although there are jerks in the linux world, there are far more in the windows world.
And they generally tend to be less intelligent... - EdLesMann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually you can put your buttons anywhere you want on Linux*.
*Fixed! - mranime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cute, redxii.
UnclePow, according to my ZoneAlarm log, WgaTray.exe (Windows Genuine Advantage Notification) attempted to access 64.4.52.189 via port 80.
So it would appear that the program uses regular web traffic ports. - JorgeGT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And people will find another bypass !
And if they patch that bypass,
People will find another way.
And when Microsoft fix that way....
... the city will be theirs and we'll live in a hell of privacy lack. - UnclePow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well I'm sure there are other IP addresses it can access, but I'm not about to set my router to disable web traffic :-P Thanks though
- rivviepop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks a lot! Much appreciated.
- UnclePow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1anyone know specifically what port WGA uses to call home to Big Brother? Can it be blocked in a router/firewall (external that is)?
- znxster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course the real solution is to read what you are installing, its not like they convertly hid what it does. Nevertheless awesome tool!
