- Jackosx, on 01/19/2009, -7/+163I don't know, but this exploit was patched back in October 2008. Microsoft did their part and patched this in good time. It's the people who have not updated their systems with the patch that are at fault. Most people are oblivious to updates and don't understand the importance of them.
- Topher06, on 01/19/2009, -12/+145I'm a PC, and I am not infected.
- insomniac8400, on 01/19/2009, -10/+100The majority of computers infected by the worm, which was first identified in October, are in Russia, China, Brazil and India.
I bet not one is a legal copy. - anagoge, on 01/19/2009, -2/+65I'm a PC, and I use protection.
- Zippo, on 01/19/2009, -4/+66Automatic updates are you friend... I know too many people who are too lazy or ignorant to bother with updates. Well, this is what you get.
- jayzeus, on 01/19/2009, -7/+61I use windows most of my time. As it has it's flaws and what nots, but I seriously don't remember when my computer crashed, locked up, had a virus or whatever. And I don't think I'm doing anything special? Some ad-aware/spybot, a free antivirus, and a popup blocker for firefox.... Is that really that complicated? Using common sense that is?
For those that don't have it (common sense). No, that pill will not increase the size of your penis. No you will not get a free iphone/ps3/xbox360/ipod/Dell laptop/psp/InsertWhateverElseHere. And your classmates probably don't give a flying f*ck about you. So save yourself some problems, don't click on that. Oh, and you most likely do not have a cousin in Nigeria... - archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -3/+33Off-topic troll is off-topic.
- andypop481, on 01/19/2009, -1/+24I think you should have stopped at your first account.
- archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -7/+28It's not the main one for me, but it certainly is in my Top 3...I'm *so* happy I don't have to deal with this kind of *****!
- heymike, on 01/19/2009, -0/+19I tried..... but it promised me pic's of titties. I know the internet is fully of titty pics, but still......more titties.
- anagoge, on 01/19/2009, -2/+19wat?
- Myztry, on 01/19/2009, -3/+20A lot of people don't take Windows Update seriously because it's used to push things like Silverlight, WGA, etc.
This backdoor aspect of Windows Update destroys people's trust in what is otherwise an essential service. - mrsteve007, on 01/19/2009, -0/+17A couple of notes:
1. This was patched by MS on October 23rd.
2. It is a 'critical' update for Win 2000, XP and server 2003.
3. It is only an 'important' update for Vista and server 2008 - since they are inherently more secure from attacks like this. Not perfect, but much better hardened. - winter360, on 01/19/2009, -0/+16i dont think Obama works for Microsoft
- archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -2/+17tama00: to be fair, the first "Internet Worm" attacked UNIX machines (using a flaw in the Sendmail daemon, IIRC). That said, there have been little malware for Unix-based OSes ever since.
- inactive, on 01/20/2009, -5/+20I am a Linux PC.
- d3dm, on 01/20/2009, -1/+16You've got three teenagers in your house. My friend, a computer virus is going to be the least of your problems.
- strawberyspring, on 01/19/2009, -4/+18It scares me how many people dont keep their systems update and protected with basic hardened settings
- Shamusjp, on 01/19/2009, -2/+16your right to exist has been revoked.

- Slacker1031, on 01/19/2009, -6/+19try not opening that attatchment from that person you don't know...
- Murrabbit, on 01/19/2009, -3/+16I'm sure the vast majority of infected machines aren't home-users but instead, as the article imply, business machines. Plenty of firms don't let you so much as right-click (no not because their on macs) and tightly control all software on the machines - and they certainly don't want to let patch Tuesday potentially interfere with business.
- archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -4/+16Not having to deal with malware is a plus, but I agree with you, it's hardly the best reason to use Linux or OS X.
/Waiting to be digged down by Microsoft lurkers - roostersheep, on 01/20/2009, -2/+14I'm a mac, and I'll admit it - I'm an arsehole.
- itsbob, on 01/20/2009, -6/+185 Macs in my house, 3 teenagers, 11 years.... never a single virus.
Digg it down if you want but its true. - CarlSD, on 01/20/2009, -1/+12Time to start issuing PC licenses?

I'm inclined to agree... - chrisduser, on 01/19/2009, -9/+20< "Insert smug non-Windows user or computer-literate user comment." >

- Sonic84, on 01/20/2009, -3/+14The business environment I work in takes months to approve patches for release into the user-base.... even critical patches have the potential to break "features' or proprietary business critical software. Glad I'm not in Client Engineering.
- Natnie, on 01/20/2009, -0/+11That's why I set it to download but then prompt me before installing, so I can weed out the things I don't want. Not that it would be any problem if I installed WGA... no sirree.
- greggerm, on 01/19/2009, -0/+10(WTF?)
- Cupantae, on 01/19/2009, -1/+11I don't see why it wouldn't. The real question is, does it work in wine?
- archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -0/+10I think he'll be on his 11th pretty soon...
- zTomer, on 01/19/2009, -0/+10Proud to be Downadup negative!
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/19/2009, -5/+14I don't get it. Do people become infected so often that you go to a different OS?
I've been using Windows since version 3.0. I've been using the internet since an ISP that had a 1-800 number was the only thing available (and was a CompuServe and Delphi user before that). And through all that, I've NEVER had a virus or worm.
So if you want to use Linux or MacOS, then great, go for it. But to think that avoiding viruses should be your primary motivation for switching just seems crazy. - Kerrigore, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8While it's difficult to deny that *nix/mac systems don't benefit from "security by obscurity" to an extent, it's equally difficult to deny that they are more secure by default than most Windows systems. It's no accident that the security improvements in Vista mirror those already present in *nix/mac systems. The two explanations don't have to be mutually exclusive.
I don't really blame Microsoft in some sense. Windows was never designed as a network OS originally, it was never designed for the internet. UNIX was. Microsoft has done their best in a situation where they got the worst in terms of inherited security flaws and in terms of number of people targeting their systems. If they made a mistake, it was not making a clean break with some of the older, insecure ways of doing things sooner. Vista is a step in the right direction, and from what I'm hearing, Windows 7 is another step. A lot of the incompatibility that gave Vista such a bad name came out of these security improvements... and looking at how that has harmed Microsoft, can you blame them for not wanting to do it sooner? Of course, if they had done it sooner, customers might not have built up such an unreasonable expectation that all their old programs/peripherals/etc. would continue to work when they buy a new computer, etc. - ClevelandBrown, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8'Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than open one's mouth and remove all doubt.
- Samuel Johnson - archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -1/+9Don't digg Lasereth down, he has a legitimate point even though his post exposes weaknesses found in Windows' security scheme.
- archiesteel, on 01/19/2009, -0/+8My10thAccount: it is off-topic because who is President of the US has nothing to do with the article.
And no, people did not use to blame Bush for getting BSODs on their PCs. I'm afraid your blind partisanship has eaten away what was left of your fragile mind... - eddie72, on 01/20/2009, -0/+8WTF F-Secure actually found something? That is more surprising than this reported virus.
- jeffgtr, on 01/20/2009, -0/+73 Macs, 2 Linux boxes, 0 virus or malware...ever. And I would know a virus if it hit me anywhere. I do have winxp running in a vm, quarantined as it should be.
- gameguy15, on 01/20/2009, -3/+10M$ gives out security updates even if its a pirated copy. The worm is mostly due to ID10T error.
- flashback99, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7an arsehole without a virus though..
- tacochampion, on 01/19/2009, -3/+10I wish they would explain HOW it infects the user.
It's just "LOL GET UPDATES" instead of anything actually useful.
By what method is this infecting people? I understand WHAT it infects, but not HOW. - podobuzz, on 01/20/2009, -0/+7"I've had it with these ***** snakes on this ***** plane!"
- Samuel Jackson - jakedakat, on 01/19/2009, -7/+14Well in most cases. I have had instances when the server does an automatic update, then on reboot it bsod. That is always fun. It's great when you are working remotely.
- theOster, on 01/19/2009, -0/+7posts like these anger me because i find myself having to read each word in isolation, catalog it to memory then run through the overall gist and see if anything coalesces.
- inactive, on 01/19/2009, -1/+8Uhh its a worm.
