- infl00p, on 10/10/2007, -0/+32Wozniak is a grey hat hacker since he was selling phreaking boxes in the 70s.
Shimomura is hardly a hacker since he hasn't contributed anything, except the arrest of
Kevin Mitnick.
The other three Linus, RMS and TBL are hackers in the general meaning of the word (outstanding programmers). Since the hat categories only describe security hackers the article was 100% inaccurate.
Examples of white hat hackers are,
Fyodor of nmap
Bruce Schneier
Moore of metasploit
Mark Russinovich - Lane, on 10/10/2007, -4/+34as compared to the black hat hackers all i can say is evil is cool.
- Dundasbro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20I put on my robe and wizard hat
- letaalio, on 10/10/2007, -7/+25Meh.. the evil ones are much more interesting
- horizontaleight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18How is this being dugg with Shimomura on the list?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12buried as inaccurate, i don't see Zero Cool on the list
- uberfu, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Woz was definitely famous for it back in the day [circa 1970's] - but he never caused any trouble - mostly just learning about and focusing on the challenge of figuring out how computer systems worked_
- PATSCRU, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14Yeah, these guys are brilliant, but they seem to be analogous to police informants or snitches.
- FingersMckenzie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Let's not forget these are the ones we know of, good hackers never reveal themselves, as opposed to crackers
NB. to avert any misunderstanding, simply type in "define:cracker"(for those that may not know) in the google search bar (can't be bothered to post the URL) - tuxidomasx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10google cache

Woz and Jobs sold these blue boxes to their classmates in college and even used a blue box to call the Pope while pretending to be Henry Kissinger."
A little white(hat)-washing there, blue boxes didn't bypass switching mechanisms, the bypassed the *billing* mechanism. Theft, in other words. How does that get Woz a white hat?
Yeah, yeah, it was the Big Evil Phone Company so it was ok... - Switch22, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11What the f*ck, I told you not to message me again.
- Drazzard, on 10/10/2007, -14/+21I wonder how many of these guys do a little black-hatting in their spare time?
- grenden, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Marvquin site is down, but here's a link to Top 10 Most Famous Hackers of All Time, probably has same info...scroll down to "white hat hackers": http://bardissi.wordpress.com/2007/05/03/top-10-most-famous-hackers-of-all-time/
- aservin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Awesome list!
This guys (at least the first four) are not only white hackers, they revolutionized the world with their ideas and beliefs. - SorensBlade, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8For the article on Tsutomu Shimomura, it sounds like they just watched Take Down, and thought "Cool... number 5"
Sigh... Poor Kevin... - uberfu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Kugo - get over yourself - do you even understand what you are commenting on ?
- Phrag, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I think its kind of like wearing a white dress on your wedding day. Just about everyone knows that you aren't a virgin, but everyone seems to silently agree that those early little 'indiscretions' don't count unless they turn in to a big deal (such as a child or, in a hacker's situation, a criminal conviction)
- MrIso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4that's because he now calls himself "Crash Override", duh. Zero Cool is his black hat handle. Who stole my fries?
- chilekillr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Thanks for the link!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Was thinking the same thing. +digg
- frozenyoghurt, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I don't think you know what you're talking about. Put it outside.
- aservin, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Mmm, nop. They are visionaries, except for the last one may be. But the others had a vision and they made it happen. The IT world may be different with Woz, Torvalds and Stallman but I think it would be the same without Mitnick
- TheSexyGeek, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Woz is the Anti-Christ! He sold the computers for $666 dollars and even threw in 66 cents just so we'd know it's him!
- Aeric, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Its cool, I saw "White House Hackers".
I was actually kind of disappointed when I read the article and didn't see any "evil" hackers. - slapthemonkey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i didnt know shimomura gained attention because he was hacked down by mitnick....
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5lets see, maybe he's on the list because he co-founded apple and made huge contributions to the development of personal computers?
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3that's technically correct. i guess it should have been "top 4 non-black-hat hackers ...and one lamo who worked for the F.B.I."
great to see Linus Torvalds, Stallman, Tim Berners-Lee, and Wozniak get some well-deserved recognition though. - BobTurtle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I'm willing to bet if any "real" hackers are reading your reply they are cringing since they are worried people might associate a turd like yourself with themselves. Also, you couldn't hack yourself out of a wet paper bag.
- refujee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"The article, "SDSC Computer Experts Help FBI Capture Computer Terrorist" recounts how Shimomura pinpointed Mitnick's location."
God, they'll call anyone a terrorist these days. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3any self-respecting geek knows how important the first four's contributions to the world of computing are. if you don't know or recognize the importance of their work then, i'm sorrry, but you're a moron. even a non-geek after reading their bios should recognize that these are probably some of the most important figures in modern computing who've helped shape the world as we know it.
educate yourself before you speak so you don't look like a retard next time. - MrIso, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3eh?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3There's a link to the list at the bottom of the article:
http://www.marvquin.com/blog/top-five-5-best-criminal-computer-hackers-all-time - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4It was on yesterday...
- Yuo122986, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It keeps eating all the cookies, what do I do? Well give it a cookie!
- fremeer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1actually if they made a version of the mac or mac mini for 666.66 it would be quite cool and retro.
- Sansname, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Wozniak and Jobs sold the first 100 of the Apple I to a local dealer for $666.66 each."
I knew macs were the work of the devil!!! - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What? Not a single mention of Joanna Rutkowska or Fydor?????? Richard Stallman is more a philosopher not a White Hat and honestly Woz, while being a great guy, is not much on the White Hat hacking scene.
- coreyo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2this should be a top 5 famous white hat hackers list.
- FiftyPoints, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Great, I'm sure all of your future cellmates will agree.
- s0rce7, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1all your base are belong to us
- uberfu, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Well - it's nice to see at least a somewhat accurate "top-5" list this time around_ There was some site that put out the "top-100 best sci-fi movie ever" and fell way short probably using people to give input that don't like sci-fi or have barely ever seen the films they rated_
But #5 is a little weak since his only claim to fame is that he "out-hacked" Mitnick_ Not that I could ever do that - how long did it take before Mitnick got caught ? Seems he was getting sloppy near the end anyway - and if it wasn't Shimomura - then Mitnick might have pissed off someone else with mad skillz and they'd have helped out_ That was the luck of shooting in the dark that Mitnick hacked him_
Then Stallman is more of an activist than anything on the level of Woz or Linus_ So nevermind - maybe this list isn't as "great" as I first perused_ Because again - if not Stallman - than certainly some other person could have filled his shoes - and didn't Torvalds himself - develop Linux to be just that - an open-source mechanism free to share and modify and contribute to the whole anyway ? - bovilexia, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4i think on #2 they misspelled the guys name. shouldn't it be Al Gore?
- Yeknom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1They forgot Chuck Norris
- seneyr, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Actually it's almost verbatim the same article. Seeing as how the wordpress article was written months before this pair.... Journalistic integrity anyone? OH wait. This is the "blogosphere". How silly of me.
- GooksBirman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1deja vu
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1tim berners-lee a washed up hippie? you're an idiot. get off the internet.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1do you have any clue wtf you're taking about?
- FiftyPoints, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Dugg up in spite :p
