Time Warner Routers Still Hackable Despite Company Assurance

wired.com — A blogger who stumbled across a vulnerability in more than 65,000 Time Warner customer routers says the routers are still vulnerable to remote attack despite claims by the company last week that it patched the routers.But according to Chen, the routers have not been fixed as of today.

    When the big DNS vulnerability came out awhile ago Time Warner told me I didn't have to worry since residential customers don't use DNS.

I am beside myself since this just goes to show that the testing was not the priority it should have been and that security is not one of the concerns yet is a selling point for this product. Again, buyers have to do the hard work of checking up on a product before purchase.

  • EnTaroTassadar, on 10/26/2009, -1/+11Time Warner doesn't fix their routers. They mostly use Netgear routers that come with a firmware that's only SLIGHTLY modified from Netgear's stock firmware. TWC doesn't push out any updates of their own.

    Seriously, regardless of what ISP you use, go buy your own router. You will be 100x safer with it than whatever your ISP provides.

  • EnTaroTassadar, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1In most areas, TWC uses Netgear. And TWC doesn't really control it. They send the requirements to the manufacturer (in this case SMC), and they basically do the minimum amount of tweaking to make their stock firmware meet their requirements.

    Yeah...not too impressed with the ISP's offering pretty much across the board.

Can anyone recommend a good replacement Modem/Router with wireless that is extremely user friendly with x-box live that I can replace the SMC one? I wanted to access the modem but whoever set up my internet changed the admin password from the default. I had to call Time Warner, who told me to call Road Runner, who told me to call SMC, who then blamed whoever came and set the router up. I could reset it but it would seem a good move would be to buy my own hardware and be done with dealing with them when i have issues with the ISP provided hardware. Time warner in the NYC/Brooklyn area allow swapping out their hardware for your own?
