- inobla, on 05/04/2008, -0/+40If the US Government tried to pull the same firewall crap that China does the backlash would be overwhelming. IMO, more websites should offer an SSL connection option so your ISP and network companies like AT&T will have a harder time snooping.
- LongShlong, on 05/04/2008, -1/+40No... Not like this... Not like this.
- mst3kcrow, on 05/04/2008, -0/+39"You will take my encryption key when you pry it from my cold dead brain!"
- refreshers, on 05/04/2008, -0/+37Skynet approves
- appleseed1234, on 05/04/2008, -5/+39Look what happened to TV and Radio. It's all a matter of time really.
- Gforce20, on 05/04/2008, -1/+29This idea being compared to AOL = instant thumbs down towards it.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 05/04/2008, -1/+29***** the RIAA?
- Culyt, on 05/04/2008, -0/+26I would have though so, but it happened in Australia, or will soon.
They will firewall you in the name of stopping child porn, once they have a foot hold they will make it worse and worse.
They will monitor you in the name of fighting terrorism.
Technologically they will order all ISPs to use a local mirror of their blocklist rather than trying to route all traffic through one location.
In the extended future your hardware could end up with embedded government control/monitoring software in it (like in Rainbows End).
Your average American doesn't believe in evolution, they will hear 'stops childporn and terrorists' and thats all. - RoflcopterFUEL, on 05/04/2008, -0/+18What's with ***** Lieberman?
- xkorbin, on 05/04/2008, -1/+19While this statement is valid to a point; TV and Radio are fairly limited on distance and tiers. The internet is a multi-layered global network.
- wenis, on 05/04/2008, -2/+20the description sure is a mouthful.
- Wade, on 05/04/2008, -0/+17Quit trying to govern the internet, World President America.
- quaunaut, on 05/04/2008, -1/+15Not to mention, both of those are relatively expensive mediums to put out and maintain. The internet can be done by literally anyone.
- chrisduser, on 05/04/2008, -1/+15Good thing memory decays shortly after the brain ceases operation.
- doshindude, on 05/04/2008, -1/+12NO! I want to be able to rickroll anyone anytime online!
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/04/2008, -0/+10Liebermann, the man who is unashamed to be well known as the worlds biggest Tool.
- ToscheStation, on 05/04/2008, -2/+12Kind of like your mom.
- feenxfire, on 05/04/2008, -8/+17If you want to guarantee a free internet, Obama's your only choice.
- CarbonAndroid, on 05/04/2008, -0/+9Imperialist ***** suckers. When these ***** run out of the means to steal from other countries they will start eating their young (that's us).
- PHiZ187, on 05/04/2008, -0/+8It's a shame. There are real patriots with bona fide credentials in computer security out there who would be GLAD to protect their country from Chinese Hackers and Russian Crooks. But instead, this will be some money pissing-away boondoggle, as military commanders and corrupt civil servants pass out contracts to people incapable of producing a result. Just look at what happened with the "invisible fence" on the Mexican border.

That ***** is also someone who almost unerringly sides with Bush and the Republicans on almost every issue and will no doubt cave in yet again on this once he has done his grandstanding inquiry to make sure his public image is protected. Don't be fooled by this. He's not fighting for your privacy and freedom. He's doing this so someone more sincere about stopping it won't step up and cause real trouble, thus ensuring he doesn't fall out of favor with his beloved W. - phybere, on 05/04/2008, -0/+8It's only a matter of time until the internet becomes over-run with government regulation and scrutiny. At that point, hopefully we'll have come up with another form of communication free of government and corporate control. (think wireless, we already have the technology to do it in highly populated areas)
- Sendai129, on 05/04/2008, -0/+7America, ***** YEAH! Coming again to save the ***** day yeah!
And by "save the ***** day" I do indeed mean ruin the internet for everyone... - CarbonAndroid, on 05/04/2008, -0/+7He's a ***** foreign agent.
- gossipninja, on 05/04/2008, -0/+7If the govt has total control of the internet, we would need an "internet porn simulator", guess southpark was right again.
CLICK - synaesthesia, on 05/04/2008, -3/+10Its not worse here, comparing JP internet speeds to US is like comparing a cheetah on cocaine to a turtle with down's syndrome. There was a recent article talking about how JP ISPs will disconnect the internet of file sharers but their focus is on Winny (a popular p2p app mostly used for anime sharing and *****) and it seems to have been mostly tough talk anyhow.
- orxor, on 05/04/2008, -5/+11Actually if you want a free internet (and a free market and a free society) Ron Paul is your only choice.
- redneckblues, on 05/04/2008, -1/+7It's worse over there.
- lordshank, on 05/04/2008, -0/+6Cyber Security, who need this? All of this is a play for companies like ATT, Universal and the like. I really doubt that security is the motivation. The more that our government gets involved with things, the more they destroy them. I for one do not want the amazing resource that is the web, turned into a old-media style playground devoted to canned search and activities. Risk is inherent in anything worthwhile. When you get drunk and eat a mountain of burritos, you know you are going to be camping out in the can, same goes for folks that do stupid ***** online. Use common sense and cyber security is unnecessary.
- phybere, on 05/04/2008, -0/+5Yeah, the good old compressed air can is great for memory retrieval. We use it all the time where I work at the CI... wait, I shouldn't be saying this should I?
- phybere, on 05/04/2008, -1/+6I like Obama for the most part, but he DID vote for the Patriot Act when it was originally passed.
- ChemiosMurphy, on 05/04/2008, -2/+8A Revolution every now and then isn't a bad thing... Out with the old and in with the new. The internet is the peoples' medium, and if the government screws with it, why not k*ll them all.
- inactive, on 05/04/2008, -2/+7If this happens, I'm moving to Japan.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/04/2008, -2/+7I think people are NOT getting that the choices are; Hillary, McCain and Obama. Folks -- those are your choices. Obama is the only one willing to investigate crimes of the administration. The other two will keep the corporate control just as it is.
- Pixelante, on 05/04/2008, -0/+5Yes you should. Only because you don't like target practice doesn't mean everybody else must like your blog.
Those who want to take away rights can and will work together. Those who want to keep them must fight separately because you will not fight for my right to do something you don't personally like and as a consequence I will not fight for a right you deem important.
In the end, we who want to keep our rights must win EVERY battle only to have another one coming, and we're divided. Those who want to take them away must only win ONCE, and they have won forever, and they are united.
Guess why they will win. - afruff23, on 05/04/2008, -0/+5If you want to guarantee anything, get off your ass and do it yourself.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5Look, the people of Israel are just as much in thrall of their NeoCon government as we are. You don't think the people of the US should be held liable for the crimes of BushCo do you? Chill a bit. I can understand your frustration -- but the elites are the ones who own the slave plantations, profit from wars, and decide to invade other countries. The people are usually either cowed in fear or propagandized.
- inobla, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5Damn that sucks. Didn't the Aussies have their gun rights revoked as well?
- inobla, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5Why not? Both boil down to rights being taken away from citizens... and I don't know about you, but I have never "shot people" with any gun I have purchased.
- forgiste, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5I say the citizens of the web that truly appreciate it for what it is should hurry and set some ground rules, take the initiative before a corporation does.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5The internet is international.
WE will just end up using some other nation to create the connections. There may be a few dumb-ass bootlickers out there -- but underneath them, is an army of people who still believe in America. They will never be able to stop the white hats on the network -- because they are the ones who know how to make everything work. - LargeTrout, on 05/04/2008, -0/+4Yeah, that's right. You sit there on your PC and spout forth obscenities while taking no course of action to prevent this. America has consistently had its freedoms eroded since 9/11 and no one appears to be doing anything about it. What happened to the tea party mentality? The will to actually change things? Has America become so complacent and pliable that the most they can utter is a lame "***** them" from their desks?
- afruff23, on 05/04/2008, -0/+4@dkapuchino
Should we also thank the robber for giving us "rights" not to be shot at when he is the ONLY person who would do such a thing?
My point is that praising government for "privacy rights" is pointless since they are the only ones who violated your privacy. - Pixelante, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5You forget one thing: no ISP, no internet access. If they pass laws that require the ISPs to throttle and monitor the traffic, then it's game over. EVERY country in the world would want to do this. They would just LOVE to put an end to this "internet folly". And they WILL do it.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 05/04/2008, -1/+5As difficult as it may seem, I believe they could find ways to control "choke points", but I am not really that savvy and therefor my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt... but I recall how shocked we all were when huge areas lost connectivity recently because undersea cables kept failing one after another...
I took that as a possible proof of concept test. I don't think I am paranoid, Just wary. - wigren, on 05/04/2008, -0/+3*shutters*
