- positron, on 10/10/2007, -3/+40"The thought police would get him just the same. He had committed—would have committed, even if he had never set pen to paper—the essential crime that contained all others in itself. Thoughtcrime, they called it. Thoughtcrime was not a thing that could be concealed forever. You might dodge successfully for a while, even for years, but sooner or later they were bound to get you."

"... helps combat the Web's anonymity ... With 95 percent certainty, it can attribute multiple postings to a single author."
This is really scary. Another tool for the dragnet.
I wish someone would go check out Hsinchun Chen and his team at University of Arizona and remind them of free speech, thought crime and things like that. - Firehed, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14So what you're saying is that you'll go down fighting. As will I, if it comes to that.
That said, if I'm planning to do some act of terrorism, I sure as ***** wouldn't blog about it first, and I doubt anyone with the skills to pull off an act of terrorism would either (crazy or not, you can't pull it off if you're a moron). Given how obvious that is, I think it's pretty clear that tracking terrorism isn't the purpose of this program.
Well, I can come up with that much just from reading the description. What an amazingly sensationalist and misleading title. - FreakyD, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12E-Terrorist
- jftitan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13***** no, they can open the door themselves.
- KingMob, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Free speech is stifled not as much when you are imprisoned for speaking your mind, but when you think you will be imprisoned and are too scared to speak your mind.
- zachshmack, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12DEATH TO THE INFIDELS!!!!
- andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12is this the cue for everyone to start blogging like lolcats? That'll screw 'em.

- thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10They should have an ***** test for all intakes of computer science students. Too many asshats have gotten through, taken a few AI courses and have gone on to big brother ***** like this!

- tonycomputerguy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Blows my mind just thinking how he was only off by a decade or two (at most). Talk about being ahead of your time.
- pintomp3, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7given that the label of terrorism is slapped onto anything the government doesn't like, you just might be blogging about it.

You have the right
to free speech
As long as you're not dumb enough
to actually try it!
Know your rights
These are your rights...
[...]
You have the right to remain silent
You are warned that anything you say
Can and will be taken down
And used as evidence against you
Listen to this
Run!

(...never thought I'd see the day where I'd have to take this song seriously...) - TwinTurboMike, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Ron Paul 2008!
- wiifm69, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Dark Web also uses complex tracking software called "Web spiders". What are things they call "web spiders"?
- assmonger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5like that would give them any results, it's much more effective for them to wiretap all international calls.
- ISIfunded911, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Many people who were perceived as a threat by the powers that be ended up killed (JFK, MLK, RFK, Black Panthers,...), in jail, sued, harassed, prohibited from boarding a plane,...You can feel free as long as you do not exercise your freedom against very powerful politicians, corporations,...then you bet your life.
- thomasprebble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6No but Microsoft do!
- netant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.
When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.
When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.
When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

apparently the government does
so much for freedom of speech - testcase, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It's about "control". Total, maniacal obsession with "control".
Except "control" is an illusion. Just when you think you finally have absolute "control", the whole thing comes completely unravelled in your hands.
Just ask the doddering Politburo idiots who drank themselves into a stupor the night the Russian people finally shrugged off communism. Even with every 5th person serving as a KGB informant, they still couldn't stop the Counter-Revolution.
It's an axiom of political science; every effort to increase control over a population serves only to hasten the end of the State.
Oh thou sons of Beria, your very diligence will be your undoing! - netant, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Apparently, your reading comprehension is not very accomplished.
The program works on the principle that every individual has a particular communication style which can be differentiated by word selection and how one constructs sentences. Writing style is unique as speaking patterns are unique. The key here is what happens if you have an information database the size of, oh say, the former TIA program.
The key phrase here is: "From there, Dark Web has the ability to track a single person over time as his views become radicalized."
So Big Bro can index everything you've ever written (or said), well BEFORE you ever thought to be critical of The Man, and that data can be mined to match the pattern of the latest Osama bin Firehed screed. Add an ancillary search of web logs ->IP connections -> ISP bill, and now they got your identity based upon stuff you babbled on Digg/Slashdot for the past 10 years.
Normally, a really cool way of tracking down terrorists, like Ted Kaczynski, but it also becomes a good way to match anonymous whistle blower to a name.
There is nothing sensationalist or misleading about the title. Its the fishbowl of gov't fascism to provide fake security in which we live in today. - dafragsta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I'M IN UR COUNTRY DISSENTING ON UR INTERTOOBZ!
- dgarallenpoe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7What a bunch a ***** we have in our governmetn right now. The East German Stassi would have been proud. ***** their fear mongering, ***** their wars. Cowards never risk their own blood. 9-11 was the ultimate pretext to bring out the worst tendencies of those who thrive in an invirnoment of paranoia and weak leadership. Someone needs to put a stop to their violent fantasies. Those who spy on American citizens ARE THE TERRORISTS. Other than that, there are no ***** terrorists people!
- thall, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4That worked in the past because those who wanted to subvert freedom were outnumbered and lacking force. Through mind-numbing tactics and little advertised advancements in crowd control weaponry, the balance of power has shifted. People today are still "free" in the sense that they have freedom within the bounds of rules, but that area of freedom has been shrinking slowly for decades.
- cygnus2112, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sounds like they want to push wannabe terrorists over the line.
- shawnolds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The "War on Terrorism" is just another way of saying "War on Free Speech". Not to mention; How is it that you can have a war on a tactic and think that you can win it? You can't win a war on a tactic an enemy can use to attack you with. You think you can win a war on Flanking? I don't think so! The War on Terror is just a facade for attacking your Constitutional rights as a citizen of this great country so the powers that be can change this country into a fascist state. Don't be fooled people! Wake up!!!
- Smight, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Seems I misunderestimated the guv'n'mint.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"People are mostly friendly, and you don't really encounter the government very often if you live responsibly"
People used to say the same thing in Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. Hey just don't call attention to yourself and do what the governemnt says, stay away from radicals and amuse yourself at the mall.
You have turned in your freedom without even a whimper, I wonder if the weasel is so wise after all...... - bungoman, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5They see through your clever ruse and probably couldn't give two ***** to the ever flaming wind about what you think.
- bungoman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Five bucks says that in 2 years, hell 1 year, everyone who is mad about this has completely forgotten about it because it won't matter to 99.99999% of the worlds population. Just sayin.
