- BlackPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Updating this quick should be the standard we expcect.
- barrosz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16so they patched a hole they denied at first?
- minh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Why are people still buying this crap product?
- pigphucker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10What symantec really needs to fix is the excessive resource usage where NAV sucks up over 100mb RAM
- BooooooooB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just so long as they weren't rushing so much they made some new ones...
- shiftt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I second that.
Microsoft should learn from this. - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7is this a closed source record?
- DiamondIce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Mejogid
and legitimate users could patch those holes just as fast (probably faster) as the virus makers. - Koskun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@ minh
I am sure you believe this is the Norton line, which is utter garbage. This patch, and flaw, addressed only the Corporate side, or the Symantec Antivirus product line, again, not the Norton (home user) products. - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Good! Symantec did something right here. This needs to get to the home-page!
- richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't think any designers actually use GIMP - it's nowhere near the standard of Photoshop, just admit it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Let's see:
Operating System: Linux - cost: free
Anti-Virus: Clamav - cost: free
Firewall: iptables - cost: free
All of the above being open source.
Why are people paying for Windows and Symantec offerings again? - berberrama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Mejogid: And hundreds more can provide a faster fix.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Make the source code public so the users can review it and judge progress for themselves
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I don't believe there is such a thing as "not so serious hole". a hole is a hole, and they are all serious.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6More information and links to the solutions:

This should be front-paged in double-quick time.
Now, if only Microsoft released updates when they were discovered and fixed, instead of once a month on 'Patch Tuesday'?! - DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It should be something we expect, but unfortunately doesn't happen that often.
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5expensive ≠ better
your donut =- the jelly - smithco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The difference is that Symantec's security holes are exceptional things, and therefore they can go into emergency mode and patch it right away. But on the other side, when security holes are continually coming in, it becomes impossible to stay in emergency mode all the time and so the patches have to become regular work and come out on a regular schedule.
Problematic exceptional circumstances can be dealt with. Continual problematic circumstances are a big red flag indicating that a company needs a massive overhaul. - nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4shlorn, you fool. what good is software if it doesnt cost a lot of money and rape my ram!? how do i know if my software is working?
- nailbunny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5if you insist on using windows, at least use an antivirus program that is free and doesnt kick your ram in the nuts, like avg free.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because its shoved down their throats?
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4sorry for the double post but...
@Derrekito
Would you recommend linux to your 80 yr old grandmother? Commercial software can be good for the mass market and usually is. Its like saying that my 2x 1gb sticks of ram should have cost a whopping $20 because that's all the silicon cost (including the overhead on the manufacturing), when companies make a profit and are in competition with other companies I usually leads to tremendous innovations, open source/freeware almost never makes any innovations. Take linux and gnu for example (the tremendous opensource posterboys), both are basically opensource versions of true Unix based systems like solaris, yes there have been some really neat packages that have come out for linux, but the OS itself is not innovative. Another more relavent example is security heuristics; which was first implemented by a company who made a profit off of the software. Opensource is great but waving dollar signs at smart people (esp. if the competition threatens to take those $$$ signs away) is a fantastic way of promoting innovation. If your boss said the company would go out of buisness unless someone thought of a way to beat the competition you would start thinking wouldn't you? Communal software has its limitations just like communal societies.
I use linux not because its free (I actually do purchase the box sets) but because I'm way to cheap to buy a Solaris box. People use free antivirus software because they are cheap not nescisarily because it's better saying otherwise is simply a rationalization. Personally I switch between antivirus software every year because some years Norton (esp. a long time ago) is good, some years its AVG (think 1.5 ish years ago) some years its PCillian (very rarely), etc. - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8"Why are people paying for Windows and Symantec offerings again?"
Some people are not computer geeks and have a girl friend. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So everything on a computer should be free and open source? I never understood the open source mentality. Sure, its nice, but people that attack things just for being closed source are annoying, especially on good products.
Can't we just label Symantec AV and Norton AV as crap and leave it at that? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They were probably made aware of this flaw before it was made public. Hence they should have got more than 48 hours.
- dusingaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It's a Windows world man... I'm a mac user and even I know that, but hey what do I know about viruses, no seriously.
- seventoes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This means that they fixed the hole that they denied affected their product?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Yeah, it wasn't serious after all. I'm sure they just patched it quickly because they're nice and preemptive.
- Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"shlorn, you fool. what good is software if it doesnt cost a lot of money and rape my ram!? how do i know if my software is working?"
lmao - If I were not writing this I wouldnt know my linux machine was even on. - redxii, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Free ≠ Better
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly what I am saying above, good call. Also users do not require an OS like Linux (esp. in the early days) to be innovative, they just needed/wanted free Unix. I personally try to ignore the price of any security software when reading reviews, I try to look at the softwares features, quality, and innovation and then decide. Sometimes it means I spend $100, sometimes is free. I would suggest people should buy antivirus software that way instead of just blindly hopping on the freeware/shareware/opensource logos.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let me see some credentials.... *looks at klbclem card*... your a Symantec Representative?!
- berberrama, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3And...
Open Office Suite - Free
Gimp for graphic creation - Free
Blender 3D for 3D creation - Free
Inkscape for vector graphic creation - Free
Audacity audio editing - Free
The list goes on and on... I used to buy all the latest software like office, soundforge, photoshop, illustrator, but now I find I can do better things and get extra goodies using such stuff.
Including Clamv for antivirus. Sorry peoples if I got a little off topic on part of the comment. - shlorn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why dont all the symantec people get AVG free. its good and its free?
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1America needs to get off their Windows addiction and use an alternative OS... such as Linux!
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with the
Free ≠ Better
It is FANTASTIC that there are programs like GIMP and OS like Linux that are free. However just because they're free doesn't mean they meet up to one's requirements (like GIMP) and one should bash the commercial products. Yeah there are people out there buying Symantec, usually those that can't be bothered by customization or finding other stuff. The tech savvies are the ones more likely to resort to alternatives. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That means someone was working overtime. :)
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And then thousands more can provide more viruses? Personally, I'm all for open source as long as it has nothing to do with my security.
- deadmoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is is really that much of a surprise that they would try to get this patched as soon as possible. Symantec is used to telling other people how many bugs are in there software. They don't want to lose credibility.
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Because people are more familiar with Symantec/Norton. I know I highly recommend AVG to people I know and to my customers, but the simple fact is people tend to go with what they know. Sad but true. Now, Symantec Corporate Antivirus is a better package with less bloat than its Norton sibling, but AVG is still better, and there is a free version with no pesky subscription costs (which should be outlawed).
- klbclem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2 AVG is a piss poor example, especially in the last year or so when the updates are unreliable. Many places are rating this years Norton Internet Security higher than AVG. Other free security setups are good but AVG is not so great now imo. Anyways for those of you who say subscriptions should be banned and are using AVG perhaps should look at Grisofts website, their free software is only out there to premote there subscription buisness software, so without subscriptions AVG wouldnt exist.
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@klbclem:
AVG Free has free subscription (lifetime), so your argument doesn't hold up. Also, please cite source for this statement: "Many places are rating this years Norton Internet Security higher than AVG" - Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1a massive overhaul that microsoft is going through that no one gives them credit for you mean right? oh wait i forgot they cant do anything right!! I remember now!
- Kupotek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I recommend Avast Pro and Nod32 to my clients nowadays. I tested Zone Alarm Suite and it can't catch much I throw at it. sadly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dance, I said dance. FOOTSHOT BOOM.
meh, I just can't seem bring myself to care about a quick patch on a crappy product. - superwick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@dusingaz:
Word is bond, my fellow Mac user.. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Exactly.... $60 for the software and $20 - $30 yearly for updates. All for a product to bloat your system and tax your processor.
Take that $$ and put it back in yout wallet, and pick up AVG Free Edition with lifetime of updates! - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6They shouldn't have had a major security hole in the first place...
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Marketing. Also, familiarity.
