Advertisers found out a long time ago that superliminal messages are much, much better at advertising than subliminal ones. With subliminal messages, you have to hope the person's subconscious is active enough to pull out something like that (or hope that their conscious missed it, whichever may be the case). With superliminal advertisements, it's so patently obvious the conscious mind glazes over it and the subconscious mind (which is primal and driven off primal urges) goes ape over it.

- frikk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8If you click on the link in that article's comments, there is a blog of someone suggesting that the reason for the GIFs is to fool anti-spam filters. The spammer would presumably generate the animated gifs so they are slightly different from message to message, generating a different hash each time. Maybe its just convenient to add 'buy' at the end instead of whitespace.

This is a common misconception. It just came up in a discussion I had in a cognitive psychology class.
- angusm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is the next evolution of a spam technique designed to defeat OCR-based filters, such as SpamAssassin's fuzzy OCR. The first version of this didn't contain the "Buy! Buy!" message; it just contained a small number of very thin diagonal lines in random colors and orientations. The idea was that the use of an animated GIF would defeat the OCR programs (until they were updated) but the thin lines wouldn't distract human readers of the stock pitch. The "Buy! Buy!" frames are presumably intended to work the same way (although they're flashed up briefly and then replaced with the stock pitch, whereas in the diagonal-line variant the different frames were overlaid on each other). It may have been the spammer having fun, but I doubt it was intended as a serious attempt at subliminal advertising.
Incidentally, these animated GIFs don't display correctly in many email clients (which only show the first frame). I was just reading that as well, beat me to the post... given that story that claimed effectiveness at 1/3000 of a second (1/3ms), this ad in question is far from the subliminal range, if it actually exists (as you point out, the movie theater study was falsified, and most other studies find no significant effect)... the suppossedly "subliminal" messages in this add are therefore easily percieved, with times of 10ms and 40ms... Basically, even if the subconcious cognition is a real phenomenon, this ad is nowhere near the right time to create the effect... - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11/90th of a second most likely wouldn't show up, since Windows redraws non DX windows 50 times a second (every 20 ms), and most screens only update every 60-75 seconds (60-75 hz).

That's not a subliminal message, just another incredibly cheesy .gif trying to market something... and failing. Subliminal messages occour without the target knowing. I've seen this with semi-blank/trash frames in the animation for several weeks now. It was done EXACTLY for this reason. I've investigated OCR image-scanning plugins to combat image spam. Most of the ones I tinkered with only see the first frame of an animated GIF.
