- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -21/+107***** HELL! Another piece of software I can't run on my Mac. I tell you, these compatibility issues are ***** - I thought with the switch to Intel we'd be able to run all sorts of new code...
Ahem. - Lorian, on 10/12/2007, -28/+81/me points and laughs at Windows users.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+62no wonder no one likes mac users...
- ThunderChunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31I bet the e-mail says something along the lines of:
'"230 dead as storm batters Europe". Click and install this stormprotector.exe to make sure you're protected!'
People are retarded. - CountC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29One lady I knew thought computer viruses infected YOU.
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -12/+39You know, the smug factor alone is almost enough to make me wish that Apple would gain a big chunk of the market....
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25""" It's a trojan. The only reason it doesn't work on Mac/Linux/BSD is nobody gives a rats ass enough to implement the trojan for those systems. """
That, and the fact that it wouldn't work if they did.
Do you think there are a lot of UNIX users who would run binary attachments on spam? - Giga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21@orangesims
If you are dumb enough to miss-spell "you" 3 times in the same sentence, 'yoo' don't have a right to complain about how dumb people are... - innate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22"The only reason it doesn't work on Mac/Linux/BSD is nobody gives a rats ass enough to implement the trojan for those systems."
Good enough for me! - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19No matter how much security you put into your products, there's no protection against human stupidity.
- herrshuster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18@CountC
In soviet russia... - Giga, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"G'damn and I was thinking of booting into Win XP on my Mini to play some Counter Strike!"
Just don't check your emails and you should be fine... - Giga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16If you need a Mac to learn how to not open email attachments, you have other problems to worry about...
- justnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Don't be an ass. I run Linux as well so I am definately a fan but this virus is stupid. I could write a basic script to erase the contents of any folder in linux just as easily as windows. The difference is you would have to enter a password to run it. If all the people who got infected with this on windows were on linux, they would have typed their password and got infected as well. This shows the lack of security thinking of people, not a vulnerability of the os.
As they say, there is no patch for stupidity. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13No but really, the title is misleading. You have to be retarded enough to open an exe from and anonymous email. That's asking for trouble. Digg is becoming hype and hoopla. This Title + Discript sounds like all computers in the world (Mac 'n Lin included) are being infected automatically.
- geekee, on 10/12/2007, -10/+21"PS: I believe this is a moment for a hi-5 for the mac/linux/bsd users around here. :)"
It's a trojan. The only reason it doesn't work on Mac/Linux/BSD is nobody gives a rats ass enough to implement the trojan for those systems. - justnick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I don't know...I think a lot of idiots buy themselves a mac.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10ps
is it me or does that look like a selection of Digg headlines? - leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -0/+8Technical details:

- orbit1979, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10not going to hit my PC either since I must manually install it :-P

I am sofa king we taught Ed - Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Click and install this stormprotector.exe to make sure..."
Nothing to see here. This isn't a worm, it's a trojan. Any user that runs apps they receive via spam (regardless of OS) deserve what they get. - ZippyV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The email attachment api that Microsoft provides in Windows XP does not allow attachments to be executed so it shouldn't be a problem.
- BlackAdderIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, it's probably just the 3rd party security mob keeping business going.
Still, it's sad and frustrating to think there might still be supposedly normal people, in this day and age, who would run OMGurtehPWNd!.EXE from their email inbox.
Explaining this "common sense" thing to Joe Public can be disheartening. It's almost as if we never get anywhere with it.
:( - justnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4oh, you're a douche bag. See my post above, it applies to dumbasses like you too.
- justnick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You're using Lindows......something will happen.
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4theyre changing

Haha, that's brilliant, made me lol.
"Just compile this and type your password into it!" - way to spread across the globe in seconds. :-) - martin77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4" Over an eight-hour period Thursday, malicious e-mails were sent across the globe to hundreds of thousands of people, said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer for F-Secure. "
....and if you don't open the emails you'll be fine.
So lets all move on .... - Kazrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Anyone who runs an EXE in their email is asking for it. My sympathy ended a long time ago.
- adinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My roomie (win user) had to say that out loud about five times before he got it.
::snicker:: - dougallj, on 10/12/2007, -10/+14I bought my first iMac a few days ago...
:D - takeda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Storm Worm hits computers around the World!
Nice, but somebody please tell why I never get one?
All I'm getting in my mailbox are just phishing scams and Mydoom.M, but nobody talks about them.
This it's really getting boring.... - Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thats ironic, no "worms" in my "apple" :P
- Snackmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Heh, like someone who would launch an email exe from a stranger to get their news the Mac n Nixers here leave their brains behind and swallow a media load hook line and slow Friday news page leader.
McAfee yawned: "Low-Profiled"
http://vil.nai.com/vil/Content/v_141316.htm
Norton said, lets close early, slow day: "Risk Level 1: Very Low"

Trend Micro says, leave us alone: "No Malware Alert There are no medium or high risk alerts at this time."
http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/ - themonkman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats about as stupid as a radio host who said that they've gone through 3 computers this last year because they got infected by viruses. Some people should be legally banned from purchasing computers.
- neonpulse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Can someone try to run it in Wine and see if it work? I miss having trojans, worms, and virii these days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it is cold and flu season
- qbyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is nothing new. I get about 30-40 emails every day with a virus just like this attached to it and it's been like this for about a year and a half. This is partially due to the line of work that I'm in means that my email is very widely known throughout the world but it can happen to anyone.
It's good that the word is getting out, though. If more people where aware of the thread of these types of emails there would be less reports like this. - dacomputerfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great point, I seen no mention of this worm being only able to infect the Windows OS. I assume this is why many of the Windows users that I have talked to are so surprised to hear that malware/viral code that will only infect Windows OS will not infect a Mac. Most people I have talked to see no difference between a "computer" and "Windows".
- rtini, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Silly Windows users. Try using a real operating system like Linux or Mac OS X.
- drakia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was expecting the last line of that article "According to the Associated Press, the *link*European storm has killed at least 41 people." to link to a virus...
- sabotank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2link or it didn't happen.......;)
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"G'damn and I was thinking of booting into Win XP on my Mini to play some Counter Strike!"
Don't open executable attachments in email! I don't care which OS you're using. I'm sure you can write a script in OSX that will ***** ***** up if you run it. - dacomputerfreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering that the largest reason the worm has spread was not related to the OS but rather social engineering, permission to run the executable would have been granted by the user regardless of OS. An OS can be secure but what about the person that allowed the code to execute? I'm a Linux/BSD/Mac user that refuses to be smug and let my guard down because I know damn well that the OS does not protect itself from it's user no matter how "secure" it is claimed to be. This worm just happened to attack the Windows OS as most do (for now) after the user welcomed the code in and ran it.
- Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let me guess the people that got infected were AOL users.
- zdiggler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nobody want to waste time writing scripts for macs yet. I bet there will be, as soon as they're getting popular.
